Pirates Offseason in Review Chat

Welcome, everyone. Baseball is back. Let's talk Pirates.
Pirate Maximus

Will Brian Reynolds still be around when the rebuild is over? When will it be over?
Andy
1:00
If Reynolds has a median season that's better than his last year but not as good as his 2021 All-Star season, what's the ceiling of a trade package the Pirates could get? It feels like while a very good outfielder could be used by lots of teams, an option not quite as good is usually available for a lot less than what the Pirates are asking for

Poll Time: Should Bryan Reynolds be traded prior to the deadline after not being dealt?
Darragh McDonald
1:01
Might as well start with Reynolds, since it's the great unknown.
1:02
Unfortunately, I'll have to give a cop out answer and say I don't know how it will play out. No one does, really.
Seems like something will have to give eventually, though. I would bet on trade rather than extension but that's mostly just a gut feel thing.

Are there any signs in his underlying metrics that Ke'Bryan Hayes could develop 20 home run power?
Darragh McDonald
1:04
I think so.
1:05
He was 89th percentile in max exit velo last year, 85th in average exit velo, 84th in hard hit rate.
The problem is he hits the ball on the ground more than half the time. If he can get the launch angle up, the home runs should come.

Does Hayes have to hit more to win the Gold Glove at 3B?  He beat Arrenado in every defensive metric
Darragh McDonald
1:07
Probably. The Gold Gloves aren't really great at actually determining who's the best defender. At MLBTR, we tend to prefer the Fielding Bible Awards.
That being said, Arenado just barely edged Hayes there last year, 142 points to 140.
Hayes won it in 2021, however.

Who’s all doing the Offseason in Review series?
Darragh McDonald
1:08
We're going to try to have the same writer as the Offseason Outlooks a few months ago, though some swaps might be necessary depending on schedules. So, me, Steve, Anthony, Tim, Mark.
Johnny

I like the Cutch reunion. Will he get regular ABs?
Darragh McDonald
1:08
Seems like it, yeah.

Is there any real reason to believe that the Pirates young core are far enough along to achieve a winning record?
Darragh McDonald
1:09
You never know with rebuilding teams. As I mentioned in the post today, I wouldn't be totally shocked if they had an Orioles-esque season where the prospects click and things get better.
1:10
Baltimore went 52-110 in 2021 and then 83-79 last year.
1:11
That's not to say anyone should expect that kind of sudden burst, but it's possible.

Thanks for chatting, Darragh! The Pirates didn't make any huge moves in the offseason... were there any that you would have liked to see them make?

Good Day!!! Am I done with adding to the major league roster or is there still a bat or an arm that I can add??
Darragh McDonald
1:11
Could always add another reliever. There's still a few out there.
Julio Gonzalez

Do you think the addition of catcher-infielder Endy Rodriguez would improve the line-up significantly after the All-Star Break? What are the chances that rookie pitchers like Ortiz, Priester and Burrows would recall during the season from Indianapolis? Thanks for allowing me to participate in this discussion.
Darragh McDonald
1:13
Endy crushed his way through three levels last year, including Triple-A. He's on the 40-man roster now so he could plausibly be up at any time.
1:14
I thought Ortiz looked good in his starts last year so he can be an immediate help as well.
1:15
Burrows is on the 40-man and made 12 Triple-A appearances last year. He'll probably be up at some point.
1:16
Priester isn't on the roster and just got a brief cameo at Triple-A. He might be further off but he could always flip that in the months to come.
Will Smith

What about me coming to the bucs? Why not?
Darragh McDonald
1:17
The pitcher? Why not indeed!
Rusty Shackleford
1:17
Who do you think the Pirates should take with the first overall pick?
Gonzo
1:17
Who do you think the Pirates will select with the first overall pick in the 2023  amateur draft ?
Bob Prince
1:18
Who do you think the Pirates will pick #1 overall in the draft this summer? It seems like most of the picks the pirates have had over the last few years haven’t been as good as they were when drafted.
Mike humphrey
1:18
Do you think the pirates are looking at hitters or pitchers for their number one pick? Hard to look away from crews!
Darragh McDonald
1:19
Crews seems to be on top of all the lists right now, but there's still lots of time. It will depend on health and performance in the next few months. Pirates probably don't even know who they're taking yet.

Who makes the playoffs first? And what year?
Darragh McDonald
1:21
I'd go with the Bucs myself.
