Things are happening! Let's talk about them.
I'll let the room fill up a bit and we'll get started.
Eric
2:06
Slow news day. What'll we talk about?
Jeffrey Todd
2:06
Funny thing is it has been just soooo quiet lately. And then there it was.
Cameron
2:06
Have you heard anything recently ont he Cardinals? Does the Cubs move force their hand a bit?
Jeffrey Todd
2:07
I don't think so. They have long had every reason to think the Cubs will be good. And the Brewers are also a legit threat. And the wild card still seems like a fairly tall task.
2:08
Still really depends upon how things look in 2 weeks, I think. Their true postseason odds will be different than than they are now.
Well, they could end up being the same, I suppose, but you know what I mean.
Jack
2:08
After the Quintana trade what could Teheran get?
Jeffrey Todd
2:08
Less than that.
Mike
2:09
Given what Quintana netted in the end, what do you think the ask was for the Yankees?
Jeffrey Todd
2:10
You can guess -- one of the top hitting prospects and a top pitching prospect (Adams?) -- but it doesn't matter too much. Hahn said no other offer they have received came close to this one, so it doesn't sound as if analogous packages were ever really discussed with other clubs.
Shnizzle
2:10
Who won the trade????
Jeffrey Todd
2:10
Looks sensible on both sides.
Matt Klentak
2:11
JP Crawford, Mickey Moniak, Franklyn Kilome and Nick WIlliams for Yelich and Stanton
Jeffrey Todd
2:11
While taking on all the Stanton money? Nah.
2:12
Them's the breaks when you create obligations of that magnitude. Can't get rid of them without giving up more talent than you'll get back; the Stanton/Yelich concept would be about the Phillies buying talent from the Marlins, not the latter getting younger talent of like value.

Do you think Brewers respond to the Quintana deal?
Jeffrey Todd
2:12
Where have you been, man? They already did!
2:13
Or is Tyler Webb not really what you were thinking here? Look, I expect the Brewers to basically continue on. As noted above w/r/t the Cards, this can't be a big surprise.
2:14
MIL is going to eye up some options and definitely weigh in the fact that they are leading the danged  division. But they have lots of young talent at and near the majors that they can roll the dice on as well.
Sonny Gray
2:14
Am I the next big starting pitcher to go and where am I likely headed?
Jeffrey Todd
2:15
Among the controllable, quality starters, Gray is the only remaining one who seems really likely to be traded. I know Houston seems obvious, but I guess I'm not sold on the idea that they'll really want Gray enough to beat other pursuers. At least not until they've explored opportunities to get an even better pitcher.

What does today's trade between the Cubs and White Sox do to the trade market for controllable arms? It seems like a steep price tag
Jeffrey Todd
2:17
Big price, as expected. Not sure it really shakes things up at all. It always made sense for the Cubs to make this kind of move, so it's not like the Braves got Q -- which would've left a lot more deadline demand still unmet.

What are the odds the Nats get something done with the O's for Britton? Seems unlikely to me considering the ongoing legal issues/ they've never traded before and the O's would probably want Robles. Nats should try to keep him from LA though
Jeffrey Todd
2:18
Seems unlikely. Wonder if teams are hoping to get Britton at a bit of a discount. Hard to imagine them paying full boat for him with the O's reluctant to deal and given his injuries/lack of dominance this year. I personally can't fathom the Nats giving Robles for Britton.
Joshua
2:19
Could the White Sox trade 2 or 3 of their great relievers to the Nats for Victor Robles?
Jeffrey Todd
2:19
As above, nah.

So the Cubs acquired Quintana without giving up anybody on the major league roster.  Are there still moves to be made by the Cubs involving their surplus of MLB players?
Jeffrey Todd
2:20
Eh ... it's not like they are just crafting a postseason roster while they cruise to a division title. They need all hands on deck for the next several months to try to win the division. Hard to give up useful MLB players while doing that, and of course they don't want to punt any of the guys they have already brought up and relied upon if possible.
Not to say that can't happen, but I don't imagine they are specifically interested in doing so.
Brad Hand
2:21
What is a realistic return for Hand?
Jeffrey Todd
2:21
Well, I can't see how it would be as much as Quintana, who just went for one elite and one very good prospect.
Rental guy
2:21
There seems to be lots of talk about teams wanting to aquire long term pieces and less on rentals.  Will that drive down the cost of rentals
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
Yes, to an extent, but the market typically will balance these things out in the end. If there's suddenly a glut on available rentals, then even hesitant buyers will look into those opportunities, which will tend to support the price. Supply/demand can vary and impact the ultimate trade prices, of course, but it's not like there'll just be bargains galore b/c no contenders are willing to give up anything of interest for rentals.
Alex
2:23
After an inconsistent past few seasons. Dee Gordon seems like he's back on track. What kind of return does he bring back?
Jeffrey Todd
2:24
Seems he has kind of fallen into the middle ground that approximates his true talent -- sort of a marginal hitter with great speed and a good glove.  Given his age, his contract is reasonable, and he'd draw interest. But there isn't a lot of surplus value to draw a  big prospect return, particularly since there's just not a lot of need at the position.
