Why does Miami always get mentioned as a trade destination when there assets aren't all that appealing?
Dana Gauruder
1:05
It's certainly a desirable place to play in the winter, though the Heat don't have the cap space to lure a top level free agent without a sign and trade -- and that's more complicated with the new CBA rules. Not sure if you saw our post but reports are that the Heat are seeking a top-level player to join Butler, Bam, etc. Lowry's expiring deal (after next season) will hold some value and perhaps there are teams out there that put a high value on Robinson and/or Herro as perimeter threats. But you are correct that they don't have to draft assets/promising young players to dangle that some other franchises have.

Who should the Kings target as a free agent acquisition or trade this off-season?
Dana Gauruder
1:08
A lot depends on whether they re-signed Barnes. If they don't, then it's logical to assume they'll be looking for a forward to replace him. I think they could also improve their frontcourt depth behind Sabonis and seek another ballhandler to take some pressure off Fox.

Who is the clips point guard next yr? Westbrook? Cp3? Bones hyland?
Dana Gauruder
1:11
Westbrook seems like the logical choice, since his short time there went well enough. I don't know where else Westbrook would go if he doesn't take whatever the Clippers offer. Hyland isn't going anywhere -- he'll get his share of PT, though he would have been wise to stay put this past season. He could have worn a nice ring.

Do you think Fred VanVleet can get a multi-year deal that averages $30 million a season?
Dana Gauruder
1:13
I do, though he'll likely need to do that via sign-and-trade. Perhaps a team like the Lakers can free up enough cap space to do it with an S & T, but it would probably be in the Raptors' best interests to try to get some assets for him. And he'd benefit by getting more money that way.

Would the Hornets seriously consider Ingram or Jaylen Brown in exchange for the number 2 pick?
Dana Gauruder
1:17
Sure, though I think it's much more likely to happen with NO than Boston. Even if the Celtics decided not to extend Brown (or he requested a trade), the acquiring team would have to believe he'd want to stick long term. Why would the Hornets do that if Brown turns out to be a one-year rental? In the Pelicans' case, they can sweeten the pot with some extra first-rounders. In that case, the Hornets would have to believe Miller won't turn into a superstar. I doubt they're going to draft Henderson, unless they're so in love with his skills that they would subsequently trade Ball.

I would trade Jaylen Brown at this point -- his skill set just doesn't make Jayson Tatum a better player and that's what we need from a second star.  My question -- what's your best proposed trade for him?  Mine is Jaylen/Marcus Smart to Atl for Dejounte Murray, OO and BB.
Dana Gauruder
1:20
I doubt the Celtics would do that unless they're really in love with Murray and they think Okongwu has untapped potential. The latter certainly hasn't lived up to his draft status.

What can my Wolves do (realistically) to become relevant this season? Do we need to trade KAT? Do we run it back and hope with health and time together it works out? Something else?
Dana Gauruder
1:24
I'd like to see what the T-Wolves could do if Towns could play something resembling a full season. That's been the issue with Towns -- the talent is there but he's missed a lot of games the last 4 years. That's why he's one of the big names in the rumor mill -- plus the fact he's entering his walk year. If you wait until the trade deadline, his value drops. I ultimately think the T-Wolves will move him this summer.

Potential trade idea: Cleveland sends Isaac Okoro, Cedi Osman, and a second to Minnesota for Kyle Anderson and Josh Minott. Salaries work out okay, and it helps both teams. Minny gets a good backcourt defender and a bench sparkplug, the Cavs get a good everyday combo forward who works well with their slow pace and is used to playing with multiple bigs. Gives them the opportunity to improve without dipping into the middy.
Dana Gauruder
1:26
I don't have an issue with that move. Looks like a fair deal for both sides.

Since it looks like every playoff team wants to add a super star what big stars are available in a trade? From what I see not many teams have assets to trade for a star.
Dana Gauruder
1:29
The new CBA rules may convince teams to either go all in now or look to shave salary. The aforementioned Towns is one star who might get dealt. Lavine, DeRozan, Randle, Ingram, Siakam, Beal, Simons, D. Murray are some of the other names to watch.

Does Jaylen Brown to the Heat for Tyler Herro and Caleb Martin make sense for either team? Miami is in the market for stars, and Herro is a similar offensive player to Brown with better handles and playmaking. Poor defense, though, which creates issues for Miami in crunch time but would be less so for Boston with their depth and ability to just play Derrick White or Malcom Brogdon as a 2-guard. Brown could play alongside Jimmy in a more team-oriented system that runs more plays for him rather than forcing him to create his own shots, which he struggles with.
Dana Gauruder
1:32
Well, the Heat would get their "star" but again, they'd have to feel he'd stay long-term. The bigger issue with his trade is that contenders in the same conference are normally loathe to make a major deal. I think if it comes to a point where the Celtics choose to deal Brown, they'd rather send him to a Western Conference team.

What are the chances Bruce Brown opts out his contract for money or stay 1 more year and get early bird rights with Denver next year
Dana Gauruder
1:35
Players headed to free agency always say they'd like to re-sign. How often do free agents say after the season, 'I can't wait to get out of here.' It's not in their best interests. No doubt, Brown loves his teammates and is a great fit. But his value is now at an all-time high -- got to believe he'll cash in and take the long-term security. FYI -- saw Brown early in his career with Pistons and never understood why they gave up on him. Only knock on him was his perimeter shot and he's dramatically improved in that area.

1:36
With the luxury tax concerns. Is there any way possible the Heat can bring back the starting backcourt of Max and Gabe?
Dana Gauruder
1:37
Doubt they can re-sign both. I think Vincent, in particular, will get some nice offers. Re-signing Strus is more likely. But if the Heat are intent on getting another "star," that will drive their free agent decisions. They may need to dot the roster with low-cost options to avoid heavy penalties.

If the Rockets don't get Harden. what is the plan b?  Save the cap room ? Go after Irving or Van Vleet?
Dana Gauruder
1:40
It was an eye-brow raiser when the possibility of the Rockets pursuing Irving if they don't get Harden was reported. I doubt Irving will wind up there. VanVleet is more of a possibility because they have so much cap space. Those are the only FA points that make sense -- otherwise, they could use that cap space to absorb big contracts in a trade.

What are realistic options for sixers if harden leaves for Houston. No cap space, no draft picks and Harris contract not withstanding.
Dana Gauruder
1:44
Really, the biggest asset they'd have to dangle is that Harris contract. That's an expiring $39 mill deal. That is some huge cap savings down the road for teams looking for long-term relief.

1:44
Do you think James Harden will stay with 76ers?
Dana Gauruder
1:45
Regarding Harden, I really do think he'll be on the move. Just seems like he'd really like to go back to Houston.

I’m surprised at all the mock drafts that say Gradey Dick at #6 is a reach. Are better athletes like the Thompson’s and Black really that much safer picks if you are crossing your fingers that they develop a jump shot? It just seems like you go for someone who fills a need like 3PT shooting and be done with it.
Dana Gauruder
1:50
Athletic, switchable wings are all the rage in the league right now and hold more value. But once you get past the top 3, it's really wide open as to how the lottery will play out. Not only does it seem like no one else truly stands out but there will be teams looking to move up or down. Should be a lot of activity on draft day. As for Gradey, I think he could anywhere from 7 to the end of the lottery.

Does Chris Paul get traded or waived? His contract is kind of obnoxious in terms of cap room relative to his current production.
Dana Gauruder
1:51
With so many teams looking to shed salary, trading for Paul and then not guaranteeing his full salary has some appeal. I do think that's the most likely outcome.

Is Austin Reeves another one of these guys who has inflated stats just because he's the only guy Lebron trusts and the best player from a group of scrubs under AD/Lebron?   I can see him signing a big deal with another team and proceeding to average 7 ppg.
Dana Gauruder
1:53
I think you are underestimating Mr. Reaves. I do think, though, he'll re-sign with the Lakers. He and Rui are the two free agents they have that they want back the most and they'll have a lot of roster spots to fill.

it seems super risky to give Kyrie max 5 year money.  Will that happen?
Dana Gauruder
1:54
Yes, it's very risky and in my opinion, foolhardy. But seems the Mavs are desperate enough to do that, or give him something close to the max.

With the Raptors bringing in Darko as the new head coach would you expect them to move towards a younger roster or more 'keep the band together' and compete?
Dana Gauruder
1:55
I think they'll go young. The roster's going to change regardless -- I doubt they'll re-sign both FVV and Trent. Perhaps they'll lose both.
