Thanks for the early questions, guys! We'll get underway here in just a minute...

Is the warriors new 12 man deep 'swarm strategy' the wave of the furure? Can it be succesful against top tier teams with less depth?
Luke Adams
2:03
Injuries are always a concern -- their 12 potential rotation players could turn into 9 or 10 before too long. It's also the sort of approach that will work better in the regular season than in the playoffs, when stars and starters are playing more minutes and depth isn't quite as valuable.

With G-League rosters, is the max 13? For example, say a team has 10 plus their three two players, can the parent NBA team assign more players even above 13? Like say Minnesota assigned Rob Dillingham and Iowa was at 13 with their three two-ways, can they do that? Or would they have to cut one of their 13 guys? Or can only 13 of those 14 be active?
Luke Adams
2:04
Only players on a G League roster by "traditional" means (returning rights, affiliate players, tryout players, etc.) count toward the 10-man limit. So beyond that, they're allowed to carry up to as many as three two-ways and three players on assignment from the NBA roster.
2:05
There used to also be a limit of two extra players via flexible assignment on top of that (from NBA teams who didn't have their own G League affiliate), but now that all 30 teams have an affiliate, that rule's no longer relevant.

Are the raps bad enough to get the 1st pick in the next draft?
Luke Adams
2:07
I don't think they'll have the worst record in the league this season, but as Atlanta showed in the spring, that's certainly not a requirement to get the No. 1 pick. The current lottery odds create a pretty wide-open field for that top pick, with no team having odds better than 14%. So even if Toronto finishes the 7th- or 8th-worst record in the league, their odds for No. 1 would be in the 6% to 7.5% range -- they'd have a shot.

What trend is more likely to continue from opening night: Lakers winning more games playing through AD or Minnesota struggling down low post-KAT.
Luke Adams
2:10
More likely? I'll take the Lakers, who I think are actually a little underrated this season after their quick first-round exit and their quiet offseason. They did win 47 games last season, and JJ Redick could do some interesting things with the offense. If LeBron and AD stay healthy, they'll be pretty good.

Are the T Pups in a position to flip Julius Randle, or is he going to be with the team all year
Luke Adams
2:13
I think he'll be a pretty hard player to move during the season, given the restrictive trade rules for apron teams and his uncertain contract situation. My expectation would be that they play out the season with him. If that's the case, I'm curious to see where he plays in 2025/26 -- based on the Wolves' cap situation, it doesn't make a ton of sense to bring him back on a similar contract to the one he has now, especially if Naz Reid gets a new deal. I wonder if Randle will end up picking up his player option and then being traded during the 2025 offseason.

If the season ended today, who'd be your MVP, ROY, 6MOY, and MIP?
Luke Adams
2:15
Gonna treat this as if it's a serious question because it's kind of fun:
MVP: Jayson Tatum
ROY: Yves Missi
6MOY: Onyeka Okongwu
MIP: Tre Mann

Which team's opening game outcome surprised you the most from Tuesday or Wednesday?
Luke Adams
2:17
Don't think there were any huge surprises, since most of the teams who "underachieved" are still adjusting to big offseason changes or were missing key players. I guess the most disappointing team in the opener was the Rockets, who I expect to take a step forward. Though I do think the Hornets could be a sneaky play-in/playoff contender if LaMelo Ball has a healthy season.
2:18
Will also say the Cavs' and Magic's debuts were - if not a total shock - really encouraging. Wouldn't be surprised to see both of them end up as top-four teams in the East this season.

What are the chances the Bucks trade Giannis and start a rebuild, like they did back in the day when they traded Jabbar? Giannis and Lillard can’t get back to the finals, based on injuries & age
Luke Adams
2:20
Barring a disastrous first half, I don't see that happening this season. If the playoffs go as badly in Milwaukee in 2025 as they have the last couple years, something will have to give next summer. But unless Giannis requests a trade, I have to think the front office's inclination would be revamping the roster around him rather than moving him.

went to bed with the hornets down by 18 in the second half. Great moral win to set the tone last night!
Luke Adams
2:22
I'm admittedly a sucker for "good vibes" and "everyone likes each other"-type stories, which is maybe one reason why I have some Hornets optimism this season. But LaMelo is really good, Brandon Miller has All-Star potential, and there are some solid role players there. Who knows yet what they have in Salaun, and maybe this isn't the season they take a big step forward, but I feel like they're trending in the right direction.

with the big trades for the t wolves and Knick’s, how long into the season until they mesh well?
Luke Adams
2:24
Both teams will be fine sooner or later, but it might happen faster for the Wolves than the Knicks. I'm concerned about New York's lack of depth. The Robinson and Achiuwa injuries, combined with a hard cap situation that prevents them from filling out the roster, mean they'll have to lean really heavily on their top five or six players who haven't fully meshed yet.

2:25
who do you like in the Kings game tonite?
Luke Adams
2:26
That should be a fun one. Obviously the Wolves had their problems on Tuesday, but the Kings didn't look in the preseason like a team that had fully adjusted to their offseason changes either. Wouldn't be surprised if they don't come out firing on all cylinders from day one. The Kings' home court advantage gives me some pause, but I'll take the Wolves.

how Important is mark williams to the hornets progress this year? The interior defense looked suspicious last night.
Luke Adams
2:29
Yeah, their frontcourt depth is a little thin with Williams out. This is a big year for him -- passing on Donovan Clingan at No. 6 in the draft was a signal that the Hornets believe in Williams as their center of the future, but he still hasn't played a full season's worth of games. He needs to start showing this year that he's capable of staying on the court and stepping into that role.
Queue's getting a little low, so I'll take a couple minutes here to see if any more questions come in and share a couple housekeeping notes.

Our usual Tuesday live chats at 11 am CT with Arthur Hill will continue throughout the season, but the plan is to make them exclusively available to our Front Office subscribers within the next week or two. If you're not a Front Office subscriber, you can learn about what we offer and sign up here: https://www.hoopsrumors.com/membership?ref=406590
2:32
While Arthur's chats will become subscriber-exclusive, the plan is for me to begin doing these live chats on Thursdays during the season. They'll happen at 2 pm CT most weeks going forward and will be open to everyone.

What does Josh Giddey's next contract look like?
Luke Adams
2:36
There's a pretty wide range depending on how he performs this season. But I do think it will work in the Bulls' favor that the only team projected to have significant cap room (the Nets) probably isn't looking to invest big money in another point guard with shooting limitations after going through the Ben Simmons experience.
2:37
I actually like how the Bulls have approached their rookie scale guys in recent years -- the Coby White and Patrick Williams contracts both came in lower than I expected. Could see that happening with Giddey too.

Were the Magic that good, or were the Heat that bad.  Can we deal Butler now please?
Luke Adams
2:38
I think that game was more a credit to how good the Magic are than a real cause for concern for the Heat, but we'll see. I do think this Miami team's realistic level is a lot closer to the one that got knocked out in the first round last season than the one that made the Finals two years ago.

What player(s) NOT on a rookie contract do you think delivers the highest value per dollar this year?
Luke Adams
2:41
Hmm, that's a question I should probably dedicate more than a couple minutes of research to in order to give my best answer, but I'll do my best here. If we're also considering contracts for second-round picks (like Andrew Nembhard) as rookie contracts, I like...
2:43
  • Jaren Jackson
  • Herb Jones
  • Donte DiVincenzo
  • Mikal Bridges
  • Caleb Martin
  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic (they're on max deals but they're only making $35MM apiece -- well below some other maxes!)
I'm definitely missing some guys. Tyus Jones is another good one.
2:45
Also, my mistake re: Doncic, was misremembering his contract and his max is a little higher than Shai's. I'm sure he'll still provide a very good return, but I'll take SGA over him in terms of value per dollar.
