Are you surprised that the Thunder made the trade for Porter, even though they will cut him immediately? Were the couple 2nd round picks worth it?
Dana Gauruder
1:03
Yes and no. I was surprised OKC added some salary to get a couple more second-rounders. On the flip side, Presti can't seem to get enough future picks, even if he already has a huge stash of them. It would have made more sense for a team that needs more future assets but this is Presti's MO. Plus, the Rockets and Thunder have a recent history of making trades with each other, either in two- or three-team swaps. So, it should not be all that surprising.

How good can the Magic be this year? I feel like they have a decent squad
Dana Gauruder
1:05
Sure, you've got two outstanding forwards and a pretty good middleman in Carter. Plenty of options at guard, including the draft picks. I think they could use another consistent 3-point threat or two at guard, but you could say that about a lot of teams. But they certainly could compete for a play-in spot.

With Randle leaving CAA do you see a possible trade out of NY and for who? This season?
Dana Gauruder
1:08
I don't see changing reps as a signal that he's going to get traded. He's not eligible for free agency until at least the summer of 2025. There could be other motivation for switching agencies, such as getting more endorsement deals.

Has there been anything (in a positive way and/or negative way) that you have observed during the preseason that caught your eye?
Dana Gauruder
1:12
Certainly, the Bucks acquisition of Lillard caught a lot of people off guard. Giannis basically made it public that he wasn't convinced that the core group that won a championship a couple years earlier could do it again. Even though there's evidence that you don't need a superstar laden team to reach the Finals, the stars themselves believe they need other longtime All-Stars around them to have a shot.

Taking KAT. Pascal and Harden out the equation do you see any other stars besides getting traded this season
Dana Gauruder
1:15
You'd have to see how the first couple of months play out to answer that question. If things go sour with the Clippers, for example, you could see George and/or Kawhi get moved. If the Pelicans flounder, you could see a player like Ingram get traded. Teams' priorities change quickly once they're convinced they can't compete or a major injury strikes.

I just heard about the Porter trade.   My question is shouldn't the Rockets just waited?  I would assume there must be some type of contract void clause with legal matters
Dana Gauruder
1:19
They eased their roster logjam a little bit, shaved some money off their cap and created a decent trade exception in the process. So that was worth it, in their minds, even if they had to sweeten things with a couple of second-rounders. Plus, they were done with Porter. I'm sure they didn't want to have that issue linger into the season and were probably going to waive him anyway.

If you are the Heat coach and what are you doing as far as the point guard situation are you starting Lowry for 82 games or are you considering hero and Josh or another option
Dana Gauruder
1:26
First of all, wouldn't count on Lowry to play a full season. He hasn't played more than 65 regular season games over the last five years. So, you'll have other guys getting starts during the season. Unless they consistently get off to slow starts, you can have Lowry in the lineup. Herro is used to coming off the bench, of course. Doesn't mean Lowry will necessarily but in the closing lineup, either. All 3 of the guys you mentioned will get plenty of PT, regardless of who starts or comes off the bench.

Any expectations for the hornets this year?
Dana Gauruder
1:28
Expectations have to be tempered again, due to the Bridges situation. It might be a blessing in the long run -- you'd have to say Miller's role will expand if Bridges is out of the picture. Washington has looked very good in preseason. As long as Ball is competitive, they'll be competitive but it will tough for them just to get a play-in spot.

What should be the expectation of the Timberwolves this year?
Dana Gauruder
1:31
Make the playoffs and advance at least a round or two. Hopefully, we'll find out whether the KAT-Gobert can truly work. Edwards will obviously be a consistent All-Star and Conley is a solid, vet point man. I don't think they're good enough to win a championship but they have to have a playoffs or bust mentality and make some noise once they get there.

How good do you think the  pistons be this year
Dana Gauruder
1:34
Much improved, but then again they had the worst record in the East, so they only have one way to go. Cade's return alone changes the whole dynamic. Thompson has quickly earned minutes and maybe even a starting role. They've got some depth and a lot of interesting rotation pieces. I don't see them making the play-in tournament but they could realistically double their win total.

How many games will Wemby play this season ?
Dana Gauruder
1:36
Is there an over/under in Vegas on this? Somewhere in the 60-65 range. They'll be super cautious if he even gets a minor injury and they'll probably let him have some games off on back to backs.
John Collins
1:38
Patty Mills, age 35, was traded 3 times this offseason.  In 4 games during the preseason, he has shot 1 for 11 and has a plus/minus rating of -33.  With the acquisition of Mills ($6.8 million salary) and Wesley Matthews, age 37, and the signing of two players on rookie contracts, Bufkin and Gueye, the Atlanta Hawks' front office has thus far significantly improved the roster over last season's team, who finished at 41-41.  What is your opinion of the Hawks' offseason?
Dana Gauruder
1:41
They haven't improved the team, in my view. Traded away Collins, whom they were never sold on, but haven't made any major additions. Improvement is centered around having Snyder running the show for a full season and getting the most out of that dynamic backcourt. Improved health would help, too. But I don't see them as serious contenders. They're more like TWolves -- a ceiling of one or two playoff series victories.

What big man can the Celtics get with the Grant Williams TPE and 1st round pick?
Dana Gauruder
1:43
That traded player exception is worth $6,202,500. That's not going to get you much in return -- basically a player on a rookie contract. A majority of TPEs end up going unused.

will the nets convert harry giles to a 2 way so they can keep him or will they waive bazley or watford so giles can be on a standard eal
Dana Gauruder
1:47
He's on a non-guaranteed deal -- I know the Nets have some openings, so if they're sold on him, he'll be on the 15-man roster. He received an Exhibit 9 (not 10) contract, so if he’s waived by Brooklyn before the season, since he wouldn’t be eligible for an Exhibit 10 bonus (worth up to $75K if he joined their G League team). He also can’t have the deal converted into a two-way.

sixers have 16 guaranteed deals. who will they get rid of? Petrusev, Harrell, Korkmaz, House, Bamba, Springer?
Dana Gauruder
1:50
According to roster count, the Sixers only have 14 guaranteed contracts. Petrusev would be the most vulnerable among that since he doesn't have one. All the others you mentioned have guaranteed deals. Petrusev could end up with last roster spot.

with kai jones being waived, is their room for both frank ntilikina and edmond sumner on the hornets roster
Dana Gauruder
1:53
The Hornets only have 12 players with guaranteed deals, and that includes Bridges, whose future is in limbo. So yes, there's room for both Ntilikina and Sumner. I'd actually expect both to make the roster, unless Charlotte sees someone on the waiver wire they really like.

Considering Ish Wainright and Keon Johnson are on the outside looking in on making the Suns roster, do they not owe it to them to at least waive them soon so that once they are cut they have a chance to get on a new team before opening night
Dana Gauruder
1:56
With only a week left before opening night, I don't think it makes too much difference now whether they're waived today or later in the week.

how will portland manage having ayton and rob williams? they cant share the floor together right? and i cant imagine either player will wanna split minutes
Dana Gauruder
1:58
Chauncey might experiment with both on the court but ultimately, I think they'll ultimately share minutes. Ayton will get the bulk of them, as they've coveted him for quite awhile. Williams' knee issues probably make him a 20-25 minute player anyway. If it becomes an issue, Williams has enough value that they could get an asset or two for him in a deal.

is it worth it for bulls to waste a roster spot on lonzo for the second year in a row when he wont play
Dana Gauruder
2:00
You can get a disabled player exception in those instances and the Bulls were already granted that this summer. The hope is he'll come back next season.
That's all the time we have for today. Luke Adams will field your questions on Thursday.
