Welcome, Angel fans and others who are just interested. Greetings from snowy Toronto.
We're going chat crazy at MLBTR lately. Let's dig in.

When will Arte realize the Angels are cursed because of their name? If he wants to win, we need our proper name back, Anaheim.

I actually just found out yesterday that the team is still officially known as Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, at least according to Wikipedia.
1:01
Moreno tried to change it in a deal with the city but was unsuccessful. Everyone just stopped saying the "of Anaheim" part.
Halo

Am I crazy to think Ward could be a dark horse MVP ?
Angels have 4 in the top 10 MVP  voting this season. Mark it down!!  Ward, Trout, Ohtani, Rendon.

Will Taylor Ward be top-10 in MVP voting this year?
Darragh McDonald
1:02
The Taylor Ward hype train has left the station, apparently.
1:03
Ward was red hot to start last year before getting hurt. He recently said that he was basically injured for the rest of the year. If he stays healthy all year, I guess it's possible that he really is that good. I don't know that I'd put money on that though.

Thanks, y'all, but come on.

So modest.

The Angels emphasized depth this offseason. Do you think the team has enough depth to withstand the inevitable injuries and remain competitive down the stretch?
Darragh McDonald
1:04
I think the depth is better than it has been in recent years, yeah.
1:05
You never know how bad your injuries are going to be, but they seem to be in an okay spot.
Halo

So much flack for the angels, but I LOVE their off-season!!! Love that we have depth and a very quality lineup 1-9 and a great rotation 1-5! Love it!

I agree that they had a pretty good winter and they should contend this year.
1:06
I'll certainly be rooting for them. I want to see Trout and Ohtani in the playoffs together.

To what extent do you feel Arte’s  “for sale” sign impacted the team’s dealing this offseason? Navigating between the final contract year of Ohtani and pending sale of a team couldn’t have been easy. I wouldn’t want to be in Perry’s shoes (then again, I don’t get paid the big bucks).
Darragh McDonald

This is a very good question.
On the one hand, it seems like Minasian had a decent budget to work with and kept signing guys and making deals all winter.
1:07
On the other hand, they avoided any long-term commitments. Was that because of the potential sale, or just because they chose to spread the money around to multiple players?
1:08
Hard to say but I tend to think it's the latter.

Do you feel the Angels have enough starting pitching, with its present roster, to make it to the post season?
Darragh McDonald
1:09
I think the rotation is in a good spot and they should be in the playoff race, yeah.
The AL postseason race looks like a real crapshoot right now though.
1:10
You could make a compelling argument that 12 of the 15 teams are legit contenders, if you count the O's.
But there's only six spots, which will leave six teams out in the cold.

I'm engaging in a logical fallacy when I think that just because the Angels didn't make a splashy signing this offseason, that guarantees they'll be better than in seasons where they did make a big splash and then underperformed, right?
Darragh McDonald
1:12
Ha. Well, it's not just that they didn't make a splashy move. It's that they made several smaller moves to patch up holes and improve depth.
Lack of depth has been their undoing in a lot of years, so the approach makes sense and is encouraging.
That doesn't guarantee it will work, but I think it's sensible.

Feels like the Angels pitching was actually quite good last year. This is for real, right?
Darragh McDonald
1:13
It seems like it. Sandoval, Detmers and Suarez all seem to be solid. With Ohtani and Anderson, that's a good five.
1:14
If Canning is healthy or Davidson steps up, then they're in really good shape.
Tyler Anderson
1:14
Do we have a great rotation 1-5? I'm enjoying my millions, but I know I'm due for some regression... Am I using that term correctly, regression?
Darragh McDonald
1:14
He almost has to regress a bit, yes.
1:15
I doubt he'll put up a 2.57 ERA again like he did last year.
1:16
FIP had him at 3.31 and SIERA at 4.04.
So, he'll probably regress a bit but that's still fine.
