Yankees Outlook '23

Hi everyone, it's time to finally launch the Yankees chat.  Sorry for the delay, things got busy here with the breaking news of Bob Melvin's hiring.
2:48
(cue the inevitable "why couldn't the Yankees have gotten a new manager?!" questions)

I see my name in trade talks everywhere and I am entering my walk year. My fit in LA makes a ton of sense esp since they wanna move betts back to RF. see this happening ?
Mark P
2:50
It does make some sense, since moving Torres opens up the infield picture for Peraza to have a clear everyday role.

However, as I noted in the Outlook, Torres was also one of the club's only good hitters last year.  For a team that badly needs offense, losing your second-best bat is a big risk, even if other hitters are being added elsewhere
Brian Cashman
2:50
Am I truly under pressure to get the team back to the playoffs? Nobody in the Bronx seems to want to wait for anything.
Mark P
2:51
For as much rope as Cashman gets from ownership, there's certainly some extra pressure.  Steinbrenner isn't immune to all of the public dismay over the team's performance, and as much as the Yankees are a money-making machine, they're making a lot less money if an upset fanbase isn't buying tickets, or tuning into games, or buying merch
2:52
I'm not saying that 2024 is a make-or-break year for Cashman, necessarily, but if the Yankees again miss the playoffs, it might be enough for a change to finally be made in the GM chair

A lot of sites have suggested a Brendan Donavan for Clarke Schmidt trade. I think other pieces would have to be involved but is this a realistic/likely scenario for the yanks and cards?
Mark P
2:55
Bronx fans will love the idea of trading a pitcher to St. Louis for a position player with an injury history!  Nothing could possi-blye go wrong!

Jokes aside, Schmidt actually does seem like a decent trade chip, and the Cardinals' surplus of position players does line up with New York's needs.  Donovan is valuable enough, however, that I don't see STL moving him, at least not for Schmidt.  This is perhaps just my opinion (and the Cards' evaluators might disagree), but I'm not sure Schmidt has a higher ceiling than as a mid-rotation starter.  While that's pretty valuable unto itself, Donovan as super-utility guy who can hit and is at least solid defensively everywhere just seems more valuable to me

Trade Rodon back to the Giants plus $10 million per. Admit the mistake now save $17 Million per for more flexibility. Even if for a couple of lottery tickets. Think the Giants would take him at 17 million annually?
Mark P
2:57
Nope.  Rodon's trade value is very low right now.  Even at the reduced price, Rodon wouldn't land anywhere near that salary if he was on the open market now
Bye Bye Balboni.
2:57
Soto has a year left so how many prospects would it take in a trade?
Mark P
2:58
Only the Padres know that answer for sure, and there's a very good chance they don't trade him at all since they want to win.  SD might only be budged if they get a truly huge offer, and making such an offer for a player with one year of control (even a superstar like Soto) isn't really in Cashman's style

My friend and I are Yankee fans and whenever I bring up potentially trading older veterans like DJ LeMahieu or Anthony Rizzo my friend says if the Yanks want any young controllable talent we have to part with Gleyber Torres. Do you see the Yankees making significant upgrades on the trade market without including Torres?
Mark P
2:59
As noted earlier, Schmidt has trade value.  But you're right in that Rizzo and DJLM are also sell-low types at the moment, as their salaries and struggles in 2023 make them a tough call for other tems
teams

Any chance theYankees make a move and try to sign Blake Snell? I’m surprised we haven’t heard more on this battle-tested, former AL East stud.
Mark P
3:00
No doubt the Yankees will at least check in on Snell.  But they might only be willing to make a big pitching expenditure on someone like Yamamoto due to his youth.

Any chance the Yankees trade Giancarlo Stanton?
Miss Millicent
3:01
Does Giancarlo like San Francisco? Do the Giants want to make a splash? How much of the 4/98 does NYY need to eat to start a conversation? How about NYY eats $58M, makes him 4/40, adds a young MLB ready pitcher (Ron Marinaccio?), SF gives up a lottery ticket or two?
Mark P
3:03
The poor Giants, why are they always singled out as takers for the Yankees' distressed assets?!

Anyway, Stanton has less trade value than anyone.  To again go with the idea of "what would Stanton make as a free agent this winter," the answer is way less than $40MM.  It would take a lot more than Marinaccio to get the Giants even remotely interested.
The only chance of a Stanton trade would be if the Yankees put one or even two of their premium young prospects into the trade package.  And even then, NYY will have to still eat some money

Wandy contract prediction?
Mark P
3:05
Peralta is a tough one for me to predict, since by the real-world numbers, you'd think he would be landing a nice multi-year deal.  And that still might happen, given the cost of pitching.

But, Peralta's advanced metrics are so dodgy that teams aren't going to want to pay big for a pitcher who might have been just very lucky to post his 2023 results.

Shouldn't the NYY's begin the painful process of building a real minor league system?....including whatever it takes to acquire tradeable draft picks (competitive balance lottery A & B' picks)? Is this their only real chance to rebuild a dynastic club?
Mark P
3:09
It's a tough spot the Bombers are in, because technically, they have "a good farm system."  They always have plenty of highly-rated prospects, from outlets that aren't impacted by the NY hype.

However, getting those prospects to become consistent Major League regulars has been difficult.  Of all the good position-player prospects coming up through the pipeline in the last few years, Volpe, Sanchez, and Judge were the only ones to get consistent playing time.  Obviously a star like Judge earned it with his play, but other prospects (Frazier, Andujar, maybe Florial now) have been held in check, or didn't get their spots back after injuries, or just kept in a quasi-limbo between Triple-A and the majors
It's led to this catch-22 of the Yankees seemingly not wanting to trade any of these guys at a sell-low price, yet also not giving them a real extended shot at the MLB level.

Did the Yankees mess up at the deadline?  I personally think it’s valuable that they finished with a winning record, but if Gleyber or Clay Holmes could’ve fetched some young talent…your thoughts?
Mark P
3:11
I think Judge's injury situation kept them on the fence.  If the Yankees knew for sure that Judge would've been back to normal relatively soon, they might've made more of a push.

But, in hindsight, their mistake was not playing the youngsters earlier and (probably more importantly) not cutting the dead weight like Donaldson earlier

What is Volpe’s ceiling? I’m a neutral observer but he never really looked comfortable at the major league level
Mark P
3:13
601 PA isn't a very big sample size, so it's too early to make any judgements on Volpe's potential.  The Yankees' hype machine also didn't help with the "next Jeter" stuff either, since that's an incredible extra weight for a rookie to carry
At the very least, Volpe has proven that he is a very good defensive shortstop.  That's not nothing, and it already represents a good result for a rookie season.

3:14
When could you see the team eating their losses and cutting Stanton. If he continues to decline this coming season, would winter 24 be the time to pull the trigger?
Mark P
3:16
There is a vastly better chance of Stanton being released than there is of a trade.  Stanton is owed $32MM this season, and then has "only" $66MM remaining since the Marlins' $30MM has yet to kick in.
3:17
So if Stanton can't get on track after this season, I can see New York throwing in the towel
Quell

Juan Soto for Clarke schmidt, jhonny brito, and spencer jones.
Mark P
3:17
NYY are so high on Jones that they're not moving him for one year of Soto

3:18
How can Cashman get a free pass for choosing to go without Seager, Semien, Harper, Trey Turner, etc... in recent years while refusing to give up minor league talent that we are now seeing may never be ready for prime time? Not to mention, could the Yankees have dealt Volpe, Peraza, Periera, etc... for Juan Soto when the Padres acquired him?
Mark P
3:19
In fairness, it isn't Cashman's own call.  Obviously mega-contracts for premium free agents need ownership approval, and it might that ownership just signed off on big expenditures for the wrong guys.
Obviously the Cole deal has worked out, and the team always knew they'd need a lot to retain Judge.  But the Rodon deal was a bust so far, and the Stanton trade is still the lingering issue that is hanging over the payroll.
