Trade Rumors Front Office Chat

Hey everyone. Welcome to another Friday chat.

Torres, Garcia and 1 or 2 of Yankee outfielder prospects not named Dominguez for Shane B?  Putting aside the fact that Cleveland will not trade him for a few years... Is it fair?
Connor Byrne
2:02
I'm not accepting that from Cleveland's perspective. Bieber is a superstar who makes quite a bit less money than Torres (a good player in his own right), and they'll both be free agents at the same time. So it's Torres plus a few wild cards for a controllable, bona fide ace making peanuts. The Indians would be able to do better than that.

Should I unload MadBum's contract via trade? Who would be a good fit?
Connor Byrne
2:06
Bumgarner has been a lot better than he was last season, but he's still a soon-to-be 32-year-old mid-rotation type (maybe I'm being generous on that) who's owed a boatload of money. It would be a very tough sell.

How are Buster Posey and Evan Longoria playing like they're in their prime? Is that why the Giants are so good?
Connor Byrne
2:09
Don't forget Crawford and Belt. Maybe it helped Buster to take the year off and refresh. Longoria's a Statcast god at last check. It also helps that everything the Giants have touched has turned to gold with respect to starting pitching.

Let's say that you are the GM of the Blue Jays. Do you make moves this year to win or wait?
Connor Byrne
2:12
As of now, I wouldn't do anything too drastic - just a couple of somewhat minor trades to better their chances. But we'll see where the Jays are around the deadline in two months. They've hung in there well despite all the injuries, but the division's a bear with the Rays, Sox and Yankees.
Jeff Kent
2:12
Am I a HOFer?
Connor Byrne
2:13
I'd put Kent in the Hall of Very Good.

Is Jessie Winker the best value in baseball right now?
Connor Byrne
2:15
He's making $3.15MM with two years of control left after this. Does that make him the best value in the game? It's hard to say off the top of my head. But Winker has to be up there. He's second to Trout in wRC+ since last season, which is astounding. Winker at least has to be one of the most underrated players in baseball.

If you are the Orioles GM do you keep or trade Means?
Connor Byrne
2:18
He's 28, so even an extension that buys out his 3 arb years and tacks on a couple more seasons would take him to around 33-34. The Orioles probably aren't going to contend for at least a little while longer, so I'd be looking to sell high.
2:19
Of course, it's easy for me to say. At some point, fans of bad teams get sick of rebuilding and they lose interest. Trust me, I'm a Buffalo Sabres fan.
Adam Frazier
2:20
Steve Adams just sent out a piece on why I am an obvious trade candidate, 29 years old, $4.3M salary, controlled only through 2022.  If Farhan Z. were to call Ben Cherington, which minor league prospects would it take to get me to SF?
Connor Byrne
2:23
Sorry. Lost my Internet for a minute.
Anyway...
Haven't read Steve's piece yet, but the Giants have a good system and I'd want at least two of their top 10 guys considering Frazier's performance, cheap cost and year of control left

Is Jared Walsh an MVP candidate?
Connor Byrne
2:25
No, but he's another underrated slugger like the aforementioned Winker.
2:26
Trout (I realize he's hurt), Walsh, Rendon, Ohtani, and they still can't win. Poor Angels fans.
Ben Cherington
2:27
Where should I ship Tyler Anderson at the TD?
Connor Byrne
2:29
I think I had a question about Anderson during my last chat two weeks ago and suggested selling high. PIT is no longer in position to do that with the month Anderson's having. So, to answer your question, deal him to anyone willing to give up something of value. I don't think teams are going to be beating down the door.

Saw Jim Bowden suggest that a Trevor Story two-month rental might only cost a Top 5 and Top 15 prospect from an average system, plus a random MLB player. I'm really excited since my farm system is actually the best among contenders outside of Tampa...who has a shortstop they're quite fond of already. Does that cost seem right to you, and should I pull the trigger if we stay in contention through June?  Seems like a slam dunk if I can keep my Top 4 prospects.
Connor Byrne
2:34
The return doesn't seem all that unreasonable to me. Without looking it up, I think Manny Machado returned one top 100 prospect and a few ancillary pieces a couple years back. One of the big questions here is whether the Marlins would take on someone on a $17.5MM salary and then re-sign him. I doubt it, so it's not something I'd do from their point of view.
Realistically, they're not WS contenders this season, so keep the prospects

I posed the questions earlier today about Florial and Duran … is there any "real possibility" that either will be brought up by their parent teams from AAA, for an extended period, this year?
Connor Byrne
2:38
Yes in Florial's case, because the Yankees are already down Hicks; Frazier, Gardner have been bad; and you can't necessarily count on Judge to stay healthy.
2:39
Oh, and yes to Duran because the Red Sox have Verdugo and not a lot else in the outfield
Alfonse
2:41
Tigers fans patience with the rebuild has run it's course.  If you were Avila/Illitch, would you give the green light to bringing in some talented free agents in 2022 to accelerate the process or would you cross your fingers that the fans will wait until 2023?
Connor Byrne
2:42
I'd at least make a GM change and then let that person decide on how to move forward. But yeah, you have to consider the patience of the fans (or lack thereof). I'm sure many have understandably checked out as a result of the ongoing ineptitude.
Uncertain in the outfield
2:43
If Duran comes up though, does Danny Santana start in the OF, or go to 1B (as JD Martinez will DH)?
Connor Byrne
2:44
I guess I'm not really worried about Santana. He's a 30-year-old who hasn't done much in the bigs, and even though his production has been good this season, it's 17 PA and he's already struck out seven times
If he proves me wrong, great, but I wouldn't let him block Duran as things stand
Bruce Schreiber
2:45
Will anyone take a shot at a Jorge Soler rebound?
Connor Byrne
2:46
$8MM salary, no control past 2021, and a .171/.253/.311 line this year. I'm not going anywhere near that right now.

2:47
What kind of return could we expect for Means?
Connor Byrne
2:50
I think it would have to be a handful of prospects, including at least one top 100 type. Means isn't a 1.79 ERA guy, but he's on a minimal salary this year, in which he has been great, and has three arb control seasons left.
