Hello everyone! Sorry for the slightly late start - some technical difficulties. Let's get this show on the road.

Are the Red Sox really about to head into the offseason with Matt Barnes as their closer?
Smith Brickner
1:09
Seems like it. They weren't even willing to sign Greg Holland, who signed for relatively cheap. And I don't see them going after Kimbrel.
1:10
Btw, I was recently doing the math on how much it'd cost BoSox to sign Kimbrel as a luxury tax team. If he signs for $15 million AAV, it would cost them almost double that. Ouch.

Are the Reds making a push towards contention too soon?
Smith Brickner
1:12
"What, you're telling me a team wants to win more games?!"
1:14
They've traded 3 non-top 5 prospects this offseason. It's not like they're mortgaging their future. I actually respect the Reds for making this push.
This idea that it's too soon to make a push towards contention is one of the biggest reasons why there's major tension between teams and players.

How realistic is a work stoppage after the CBA expires?
Smith Brickner
1:16
It's not unprecedented, so there's that. MLBPA has also showed a lesser-than-ideal willingness to work with Manfred and the owners. Still, work stoppages are really rare: give it a 5% chance at this point, still a ways to go until the current CBA expires.

What would an Arenado extension look like?
Smith Brickner
1:19
Fascinating development with the Rockies and Arenado settling at $26 million in his last go-around in arbitration. With age, production, durability, i'd expect 7-8 years, $28 million AAV would be realistic. Perhaps he gets $30 million... that'll depend on how much Machado signs for.
1:20
To that point, *if* Arenado signs an extension, I highly doubt it'll be before Machado signs

most volatile prospect in baseball?
Smith Brickner
1:23
I'm guessing you mean in terms of projected outlook... lots of people are debating outlook of Hans Crouse. He absolutely has frontline stuff, but will his whacky mechanics have scouts worried about his future durability and ability to locate with his pitches.
1:24
Alex Reyes too, but to a lesser extent, since he's already shown he can make major leaguers look downright silly
1:25
Guess you could also throw in Estevan Florial. Some outlets have him in the top-50, some don't even have him in the top-100. I'd say he's probably somewhere in the middle.

Your Tatis ranking seemed low. Is it really just because of the strikeout problems?
Smith Brickner
1:29
The strikeouts are problematic, no getting around it. Something to keep in mind, Tatis is dominating pitchers in the minors. MLB pitchers adjust way better than minor leaguers do, so anything Tatis excels at, the league will make some sort of adjustment. I need to see more from him in terms of making adjustments because frankly, he hasn't been really tested yet. If he is slow to make adjustments, that's a big red flag
1:30
Now, this isn't to say he won't be impactful: he's in my top-5, after all. It just means he'll be really good instead of really awesome. Really good is still valuable!

Do Yankees make any more moves?
Smith Brickner
1:33
Besides the possible signing of Machado or Harper - which I'd peg at 5% right now - perhaps they keep signing pitchers to add to their depth. They signed Danny Farquhar (so happy for him!), so I could envision similar moves like that.
1:34
This just in: Jerry Blevins signs minor league deal with Athletics. Nice pickup for A's there. Blevins not far removed from being an impactful relief arm. A bounceback is definitely in the realm of possibility.

Does a Realmuto trade come together before pitchers and catchers report?
Smith Brickner
1:36
I would have to imagine that teams offer less when pitchers and catchers report because catchers need time to learn pitchers in ST. Any period of time he misses with a pitching staff will make him slightly less attractive on the market. Now is the time to move him.

Solution to tanking by teams?
Smith Brickner
1:40
There's a guy I know who used to work for the Angels and now runs an eSports business, he has a great idea I want to eventually write a piece on: Basically, you give the #1 pick to the team with the best record that missed the playoffs, then go from there. The team with the worst record would have the worst non-playoff drat pick. Love that idea.

Does Russell stay with the Cubs this season?
Smith Brickner
1:43
So long as no other allegations come out, I would say no. But Russell and the Cubs both know, he's on the last straw. One more mistake and he's gone.
If they were going to cut him, I feel they would've done that by now.

Best bargain this offseason?
Smith Brickner

Wilson Ramos and Whit Merrifield (extension) come to mind. You could throw Andrew Miller in there if he shows he's healthy.

Grade the A’s offseason
Smith Brickner
1:48
B. They've had a fine offseason, considering they're a small budget team. Profar, Fiers, Soria, Estrada, Blevins is fine. Could still use one more starter. Gio Gonzalez has been linked to them, I have to think Ervin Santana is on their radar, and Wade Miley was probably a target before he signed.

How much does draft prospect sentiment change in the spring?
Smith Brickner
1:51
Ethan Hankins was expected by some to be the #1 overall pick before spring play began last season... he was drafted 35th by the Indians. So yeah, a lot can change.
