PHR Live Chat: 2024 Trade Deadline

Josh Erickson
7:16
Morning, everyone! It's great to have the time to do one of these again.
7:17
Heck of a rush the past few days, but there should still be plenty to talk about today. I'd expect all of the teams who were in on Guentzel until the last minutes (VGK, NYR, VAN, FLA) to do something else fairly consequential today.

What does Dallas or Calgary get out of yesterday's trade of Petterson for Damiani?
Josh Erickson
7:17
Ah yes, the true blockbuster
7:19
I like this deal slightly better for Dallas. Both were late 2018 picks, but Pettersen has had a more linear development path in the AHL and has come up through a pretty great environment/development staff with the Wranglers.
7:20
Damiani lit up the A in that COVID year but has regressed pretty sharply. I think there's some upside there, but if you'd ask me to pick one player that gets an NHL role long term, I'd say Pettersen.

Where do you think Pavel Buchnevich goes?
Josh Erickson
7:22
I'd guess he and Toffoli are the primary plan Bs for those teams that missed on Guentzel. Two teams will obviously be left hanging — I think that's Florida and Vancouver. It appeared yesterday that they were the earlier two to back out and weren't willing to meet the asking price.
So, either NYR or Vegas for Buch and Toffoli is my educated guess without any real insider info.

what do the devils do today, especially with toffoli?
Josh Erickson
7:24
Following up with this, I do think he gets moved. There's no progress on an extension. Gap is quickly widening, really just a three-way battle between NYI/TBL/DET for the wild card spots at this stage.
They're still young. Offload him for someone that can help you in 3 years and replace him with a UFA pickup
7:25
I think their goaltending is more likely to be a summer move, but you never now. I'd be surprised if they don't land Markström eventually after the drama that seems to be unfolding between him and the CGY front office.
Aidan
7:26
Where do you think Jason Zucker and Matt Dumba end up?
Josh Erickson
7:27
I'd put money on the Canucks for Zucker. They need someone who can log more minutes than Höglander or Suter to play with EP40, and the acquisition cost will be more in their comfort range for where they're at in their contention window.
7:28
Not sure about Dumba. He'll get moved for sure, although the market isn't favorable for the Yotes to get anything more than a 2nd. Could very well be a 3rd at the end of the day. Tampa Bay needs a defenseman after losing out on Hanifin, could be an option for them.
Bring out the zamboni
7:29
With their recent slide, do the blues trade buchy and another defenseman besides scandella?
Josh Erickson
7:30
Someone will need to blow them away to move Parayko, but I think they should. Having such a slow D-core has held an overperforming F/G group back and likely cost them a playoff spot.
7:31
I do think there'll be enough of a bidding war to pry Buchnevich away
John
7:31
Any chance the caps move Kuemper?
Josh Erickson
7:32
Doubt anyone is willing to take that term. Signed through 2027
Alex
7:32
Fair to say that Rangers 1st is only really in play now if Buchnevich is traded? I know they cannot just make a move for Wennberg and then sit on their hands but its hard to see them moving a 1st for a Vatrano type unless there are lofty conditionals attached to it.
Josh Erickson
7:32
Agreed, although I think a strong package centered around a 2nd would get Vatrano too

let's get inside the mind of Ryan Johansen...does he dare report to the AHL?
Josh Erickson
7:33
If he wants to play and try to rebuild his value, he'll have to. Brière made it pretty clear yesterday that RyJo won't be with the Flyers for the rest of the year.

Outside of the Guentzel trade, which team do you think has had the best deadline so far?
Josh Erickson
7:35
Vegas and it's not particularly close. Mantha should shine with that level of support, even if he's far from being the two-way replacement for Stone. I thought the value in that and the Hanifin deal both swung the Knights' way. They kept Brisson and Lindbom and still have two of their next three first-rounders
Pens Fan
7:35
Do you think the Pens have a chance to resign Jake in free agency?  The team has a decent bit of projected cap space especially if Dubas can find his way out of some cap hits before the deadline.
Josh Erickson
7:36
A chance, sure. Is it likely? No. I don't think they're in any position to make a long-term commitment to a 30-year-old. Doesn't seem like something Dubas is considering, either, with his messaging about getting younger.
D. Briere
7:36
So, how am I doing so far?
Josh Erickson
7:37
No real complaints. Pressure someone into paying a first for Laughton as a last-minute panic move for center depth, and it'll be perfect

morning! Hope you all have a good day.

Thanks!

what are some realistic expectations / targets for the Jets?
Josh Erickson
7:37
They've been surprisingly quiet, although I guess that's not unlike Cheveldayoff.
7:39
I really don't think they need another defenseman. If they have an injury, Heinola's ready. They're such a deep team as it is, I'm not sure what they can really do to move the needle and I think getting Monahan was already a decent impact. I don't expect much movement from them today.
Maybe a winger. I could also see them being in on Zucker or maaaaaaaybe Toffoli, but I think they'll get priced out on him pretty quickly

Is there any chance Ullmark is dealt today?
Josh Erickson
7:40
Only if it helps Sweeney execute a much larger move
Steve Yzerman
7:40
Is there any moves I can make that help the team now without hurting it long term?? Does anyone need a Holl?
