OK let’s get started

What’s the status of Johan Larson coming to the Pens? It was reported yesterday that they were getting him but I haven’t seen anything more about it
Zeise
12:20
Seems like they are still working on a deal. Last I saw it was “close”

Paul, long-time admirer of all your media work. Let me say, ever since you lost all that weight when you stopped regularly "killing a whole pizza and a pitcher of beer by yourself", you look good ...in fact, you Acrisure look good, in our opinions!
Zeise
12:20
Ha ha. Why thanks and Heinz will be missed!

Hey Paul thanks for the chats! Most of the pundits are saying the Steelers have an elite defense that will carry the team to at least a wildcard. I know there are 3 elite players with Watt Heyward and Minkah but the rest of the D is average to below average at all other positions. Getting a few players back from injury and adding Jack will help but how much better are they from last year when they were last against the run and torched in the air by the better QB's?
Zeise
12:21
I have to see it be elite to believe it is elite. There are some really high profile stars but the defensive line and corners look ordinary to me (beyond Cam Heyward of course)

I did not mind the resigning of Letang and Malkin but the issues in goal remain. Jarry has been a nice regular season goalie but has not been available or has choked in the playoffs. Casey in servicable but not reliable if the Pens need him. Did the Pens make a mistake by not signing one of the several free agent goalies on the market?
Zeise
12:22
I liked the signing of Letang and Rust. Was not a fan of keeping Malkin and DeSmith. It looks like the same team to mw

You're naive to think that there's no chance that Pitt and West Virginia could be unharmed in conference realignment. If the Big Ten and the SEC go to 20 or 24 teams and stage their own playoff, both schools will almost certainly not be invited to join either conference. Of course, they can play schools in those two conferences as non-conference games. But at that point, both schools become more akin to MAC schools. All of the signs are pointing to a two tiered FBS football setup with Pitt and WVU on the outside looking in. Hindsight is always 20 20, but the rejection of the expanded playoff by the ACC may end up being the reason for the demise of the ACC.
Zeise
12:24
What I said is even if they are left out of the super conferences they will find good landing spots and still play major college football. I don’t think that is a “hot take” or outlandish or even going out on a limb

Well it looks like Bednar is coming back to earth as 2 out of his last 3 appearances have been disasters. I'm sure his trade value took a hit. Will the Bucs still consider moving him at the deadline or will they hold on to him as he is a fan favorite with local ties?
Zeise
12:26
I have said it many times - those kinds of pitchers generally have a shelf life and it is mostly because of overuse and their power arms being taxed. The Pirates should trade him now while his value is high

What conference will Pitt be in 5 years? The ACC or a mega/super conference?
Zeise
12:27
The ACC

Hello Paul. Help me out here. Like any other job, you can only work with the materials you have, so how do you think I'm doing with my team so far. Last night I decided to pull the starting lineup out of my hat because my players who are hitting all needed the rest I thought.
Zeise
12:28
Giving pitchers a break here and there makes sense. This incessant need to rest position players is idiocy

A way-too-early prediction request: what will the Steeler record be within the AFC North?
Zeise

3-3

I used to go to games with my dad at Forbes Field. I've had a love affair with the Pirates for 56 years. And now I honestly don't care if Nutting moves them out of town when the lease is up or not. And I'm not even talking about the Pirates, it's MLB. DH in the NL, RISP's artificially added to extra innings, robot umpires. What they put on the field now looks almost nothing like the game was intended. Any words of condolence? Am I a traditionalist or a curmudgeon?
Zeise
12:30
It is a different game but life is changing. I’m an old curmudgeon too and I hate a few of those things but some of the changes are for the better

Hi Paul.  With the Penguins’ free agent signings, do you anticipate any trades, especially with the number of defensemen?  Thanks.
Zeise
12:30
They are definitely going to have to offload some defenseman

Whats the big deal about Heinz Field name change? The Steelers are no different than any other business. They follow the money.
Zeise
12:33
People in Pittsburgh are provincial and hate change. The fact that people keep asking “why is this a big deal” is mind boggling. If you know anything about Pittsburgh fans you don’t have to ask that

Paul, what do you think about the comments made about LIV ?  Who’s your pick to win the tournament?  Thanks.
Zeise
12:34
I’ve been very consistent - the criticism of LIV is silly and mostly off base. I’ll pick Rory to win this weekend

I see the Steelers are a way long shot to win the AFC North in 2022. Do you buy that, Paul? They were a playoff team last year with a QB well past his prime. They've upgraded on the OL and have some big talent at QB, brought back all the studs on D. Is a big year a possibility or am I just being rosy?
Zeise
12:36
I still the Bengals and Ravens (healthy) are better and if Watson plays the overwhelming majority of games, the Browns are better
Jay
12:36
Hi Paul! What’s the definition of insanity? It seems to apply to the Penguins this off season. What am I missing here?
Zeise
12:37
Again, I am not a big fan of what they have done.

I read online that former 1960 Pirate Dick Schofield recently passed away. But I haven't seen it noted in the Post Gazette. Has this been confirmed?
Zeise

He died on July 11th which was, what, Monday

The money generated through sports has become ridiculous.  $200+ million contracts for players, $10 million per year for a sign on the Steelers stadium, the LIV hundreds of millions being doled out.  Have you heard of any discussions where governments are standing up to sports teams or flat out denying to build their stadiums?   The leagues have the money, they should build their stadiums, end of story.
Zeise
12:40
I agree wholeheartedly. Everyone knows I’m very Libertarian in my thinking and tax payers should not have to pay for stadiums for billionaires who will then turn and charge $120-$150 for a ticket to get in

Hi Paul. With DeSean still in limbo, Josh Dobbs might be the No 2 QB behind Brissett. With training camp soon starting, you've seen him play. Can he do it?
Zeise
12:41
Ha ha. He is a good backup quarterback, provided he never has to actually play
Geno
12:41
Hey Paul. Geno here. I did good, no?                     I kinda give them comrade hometown discount. yes? You will see, Geno play better.
