If the unthinkable happened and the mlbpa agreed to a salary cap and floor. Do you think the Pirates are even capable of spending to said floor? Let’s just say the floor is $100 million.
Zeise
12:00
Yes because with any salary cap comes revenue sharing and the cap and floor would be set by a percentage of the overall revenues. That is one of the biggest reasons it will never happen - the rich owners don’t want to share revenues with the small market owners

You've written that you are an Earth, Wind & Fire fan. Thoughts on Bruno Mars's Leave the Door Open? Seems a direct style copy to me.
Zeise
12:02
There are some EWF influences no doubt but artists always sample stuff from older artists and Bruno Mars can flat out sing. Dude has some great music

I have read an opinion here and there that says when the Pirates are ready to contend this time around Bob Nutting will spend money to get them over the hump. One reason supporting this idea is that Cherrington wouldn't have taken the job if he weren't assured that would happen/ Do you buy it? The Pirates could have doubled their payroll and gotten a couple real major leaguers who might have given us a semi competitive team, not blocked guys in the minors, and been below the 20th percentile in salary. Seems like Nutting just thumbs his nose at fans. Why would he change? Why would he not let Cherrington walk away in couple years rather than spend? I know you don't know either but the "when it's time" story has lived long.
Zeise
12:03
My opinion on this has not changed at all - I will believe it when I see it. Until then I will remain open minded but skeptically im
*but skeptical

The college conference shuffle has been quiet the last few years. But how many years are we away from having 65 or so schools completely break away from the NCAA and form their own association or at least their own division? This seems inevitable.
Zeise
12:05
I have read this before many times but I don’t see it. The NCAA is a league and a marketing arm and every school is making money hand over fist by being associated with it and the brand. I can’t see it being more profitable elsewherw

I know that sports is literally the meaning of life to some folks, but I feel like perspective should matter.  Let's imagine all of our sporting teams were located in Detroit.   We would have believed that our football team was one of the best in the league, we would honor our hockey team for its first place finish, and we would say that our baseball team looks like our baseball team.  I feel like we're pretty judgmental here about what is success.  Yes, we should expect more, but also, we should probably be more grateful for what we have.
Zeise
12:08
Ah, the “we are spoiled” here stuff. Teams here have been successful. People pay lots of money for tickets and want their teams to win

Coach K announced he was retiring as I’m sure you’ve heard. I was always under the impression that was going to be the job Capel left Pitt for. Why do you think he wasn’t considered for that job as he was a valuable assistant under him for a long time?
Zeise
12:10
He was never going to get considered for the job. Once he left for Pitt it became very, very clear that they believed Jon Scheyer was a rising star as they promoted him and have been grooming him ever since. I think he will do most of the coaching duties this year as Coach K goes on his retirement tour

Hi Paul. Whats the bigger shocker - That RM administrators canceled their hockey programs, or that Hextall and Burke seem mostly happy with the Penguins roster?
Zeise
12:14
The Robert Morris hockey situation is crazy but that’s economics of collegiate sports these days and schools have to make tough decisions. How it came about us a little slimy but this is how things are done these days. My bad I forgot, since I never made it to a RMU hockey game and support the team, I am not allowed to have an opinion on it or feel it is wrong that they cancelled the programs. Guardians of the sport and silly self-appointed media geniuses told me so on Twitter. I don’t believe Hextall is going to stand pat.

Paul,  Last week you mentioned that the Pirate announcers are great guys. Although that may be, in my opinion they (especially Joe Block and Bob Walk) are horrible announcers! They are not only boring, they are blatant cheerleaders for a bad Pirate team with no objectivity at all!
Zeise
12:14
They work for the Pirates, they aren’t objective and they are supposed to be cheerleaders

hey paul always enjoy your comments, so here goes,i think ben can't get away with the lime light, i think he he afraid when he retires nobody will ever hear from him again, he has no endorsements, no tv people want him and he'll just drift off into into la la land !!!!!!!!whats your brain telling you paul?
Zeise
12:16
He’s made about $300 million in football with all he’s done. I think he will be able to pay his bills. And yes athletes struggle with being out of the limelight but I think with him it is more he wants to chase one more Super Bowl to cement his legacy
TPHunter
12:16
After Ben spends all of this time to learn the new offense, why would he retire after this season as long as he stays healthy? Would another 1-year deal next season be much of a surprise to you?
Zeise
12:17
He actually has a multiple year deal - with voidable years. I really believe this - if he plays well and they don’t win a Super Bowl, I think he will be back
TPHunter
12:18
Watching the Lightning, Bruins, Avalanche, Golden Knights and Hurricanes during the playoffs, I'm almost relieved that the Penguins went out in the first round because of what might have happened to them going forward. Do you think they could have beaten any of those teams?
Zeise
12:18
Well considering they couldn’t even beat the Islanders.....
Matt from LA
12:19
Do you think that Coach Capel had asperations of one day replacing Coach K at Duke or was this just a pipe dream on his part?
Zeise
12:20
Well it is one of the best jobs in the country so I’m sure he and just about every coach would have loved to have it. But I don’t think his career hinges on whether he gets it or not
Wooden Bat Fan
12:20
Ive been told the Coach Eric K situation is not over, it sounds done to me.
Zeise
12:24
There is some pipe dream that they will get new school board members in the fall and they will reinstate Eric Kasperowicz. That may be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard but any story that begins with “Pine-Richland football ....” in recent weeks is bound to take idiocy to another level. All of those people up there need to quit while they are behind
TPHunter
12:24
I assume that the Kracken must fit under the NHL salary cap for next season, so can't existing teams just put all of their bad contracts out there for exposure? They come out ahead no matter what because either they won't lose a player or the Kracken will absorb the bad contract, right?
Zeise
12:25
Teams do that but unless you have a ton of bad contracts some of the people you leave open will have to be good players on decent contracts
TPHunter
12:25
Coach K leaving - the best coaching resume in college basketball behind only John Wooden?
Zeise
12:26
I would put him ahead of Wooden. I really would. His resume is better if you add in the era he coached in, the expanded tournament, the one and done and straight to high school players, the growth of D-1 — it is much harder to get to the Final Four

12:26
Why do small market teams just go along with big owners wants. Somebody or someone must believe that the current model is archaic and not in the best interests of the overall viability of the league.
Zeise
12:28
Because they have become and continue the become insanely rich under the current system and nobody expects them to spend money. If I told you that you could make $30-$50 million a year regardless of results what would you do?
Zeiseknox
12:28
During last Saturday's DH for the Pirates, Dias throws wild, gift run scores , man on third w/ 1 out, the next two batters inexcusably look at third called strikes. If you as a manager want to change the mindset of your team, why don't you bench a player for that ? The job of a guy w/ one out and a man on 3rd is to put it in play and get him home. You can't drive in a run by looking.
Zeise
12:31
You can’t just bench people for every mistake in baseball - if you take a guy out he can’t go back in and you could leave yourself short handed

Should I break out my old Pittsburgh Maulers gear now that the USFL is coming back? Seriously though, how long does it really last? A season? Spring football just doesn't seem to work.
Zeise
12:32
I can’t keep track of all these damn spring and summer football leagues. I turned the TV on the other day and Ted Cottrell, who is like 90 isn’t he?, was coaching for some team in some league ive never heard of
