Let’s do it!!!

Good morning Paul.  With the hiring of Khan as GM, and Wiedl as Assistant GM, where does that leave Brandon Hunt?  It doesn’t seem like he has a place within the Steelers’ organization.  Thanks.
Zeise
11:05
I don’t know it seems like they want to keep him around but after getting passed over for two jobs I’m not sure why he would want to stay

Hi Paul, why wouldn't Nutting move the Pirates to, say, Las Vegas? (It's working for the Raiders..)  MLB wouldn't stand in the way of a "company" guy like Nutting who votes for a collective bargaining agreement that doesn't address his unfair small market restrictions.  MLB has is willing to compromise traditions:  DH in both leagues, multiple wild card playoffs, interleague play, instant replay.  Yes MLB has been in the
Sorry, I hit return,... yes MLB has been in the 'burgh since the 1800s but as for current ownership, they may retort, "so what".  Las Vegas will be more supportive (in their view, not mine) and it will reap more merchandise sales...   Hey, the West Coast needs more rivals
Zeise
11:07
I don’t think it would benefit MLB. Pittsburgh has been a good market and has actually supported a team that doesn’t merit support. I just don’t see it ever happening

With Omar as the GM will the Steelers increase their use of analytics?
Zeise
11:10
I think that is definitely going to be a part of the new Ateelers equation. He is an analytics guy, a numbers guy and so I’m sure it will become more prominent. But one thing to remember is the head coach understands and uses the analytics but coached by his gut feeling and feel for each situation and that won’t change

Paul, apparently, the Steelers wanted Pickett all along. Was Haskins' death a contributing factor to an "urgency" to draft him in Round 1?  Most certainly it led to Oladuken in the late round..
Zeise
11:11
It probably factored more in the latter than the former. Even if Haskins was around, they would have picked Pickett. They wanted him and made it clear they were in that market

11:11
Is it a bad idea to trade Mason this season? I don’t want to see another rookie from Samford start a game because of injury.
Zeise
11:11
They have two other guys in Trubisky and Pickett. They need to get rid of Rudolph
ev
11:12
Paul, back to the Pirates, I don't see them competing, rather winning/playoffs anytime soon because of pitching.  To make a run, they will need to sign FA pitching.  They struck gold with AJ Burnette and Liriano back in their mid 2010-20 run, but, seeing the prices of MLB FA these days, well, it's too rich for Nutting's purse strings.
Zeise
11:14
I have not at all been impressed with their pitching staff and by staff I mean the coaching staff. What has Oscar Marin done? Who has he made better? What is his program producing?

Why isn’t Rudolph openly demanding a trade? Is it out of his character to be upfront? It’s pretty evident considering circumstances, that he has been made the odd man out- Trubisky is the current torchbearer, Pickett the heir-apparent, Oladokun the hoped for future backup for Pickett- or trade bait if he blossoms. Most players, ala Baker Mayfield, would be expressing their anger or disappointment, and demanding a trade or release. If the Steelers kept him, then Oladokun gets axed and it’s an admission that the draft pick was wasted. If Rudolph beat out Trubisky for the one year starter tag, then it’s an admission that the Steelers thought too highly of Trubisky. I don’t see the team willingly admitting to those facts. In your opinion, does Rudolph genuinely believe he has a legit chance of winning the race? Or is he more of the mind that being cooperative and team-first will lead a QB needy team to think more highly of him?
Zeise
11:18
I think he is trying to show he is a team player and a leader. I think he needs a change of venue and he knows it and is biding his time. He is no doubt going to be trade it so he is trying to make the situation work for him

Love the chats. The new GM has been chosen. He is apparently well thought of by the Steelers for both his loyalty and his ability to manage contracts. How do you think he will do as a talent evaluater?
Zeise
11:20
He has roots as a scout and personnel side guy so it isn’t like he is clueless. I think they made a good move to hire a strong personnel guy to work alongside him but he is going to do fine. I think he is really smart and part of being a good boss is being able to listen to your staff

Granted their only OTA’s, but any take on how well Alualu’s ankle is holding up? Will his condition (and I’ve had a broken ankle- not so easy to get back to normal as we age) make him the next Steeler (Bush) who struggles in game action as a result?
Zeise
11:21
It is way too early to evaluate that stuff. All accounts seem to indicate Alualu is on his way back to full recovery

Tomlin addressed his biggest need: QB. Does he care who starts or what the style of offense is as long as they are better at staying on the field and scoring TD’s?
Zeise
11:22
No. I think he will welcome a lot of running the ball and sustained drives. That is what they need more than anything else

Good morning, Paul.  Curious to hear your thoughts on the following: I have this running debate with myself as to who is the greatest Penguin  of all time (Lemieux vs. Crosby, with apologies to Jagr).  From a talent standpoint, there is no doubt 66 stands at the top of that mountain.  Having said that, Crosby has been to 4 SCFs and won 3 (as compared to 2 each for Lemieux), and Crosby has accomplished this in the salary cap era.  Moreover, there is no doubt in my mind that Crosby has wrung every inch of talent out of his body on an almost nightly basis, whereas Lemieux certainly never came close to that during his first handful of seasons as a Penguin.  Toss-in Crosby's golden goal in the Olympics .....  We are lucky to be able to have this debate as Penguins fans and in my book they are each top 5 NHL players of all time and I do not believe there is a correct answer.  Having said that, if you had to answer, what would your answer be?
Zeise
11:24
The greatest Penguins player was Mario Lemieux but the greatest career is Sidney Crosby. So to answer your question I agree with you it is Crosby. He is going to retire as maybe the second greatest player in NHL history behind only Gretzky

Hi Paul, So, Thursday night football is only viewable with an Amazon Prime membership (pay for view).  I can foresee a time, perhaps sooner rather than later, that first the Super Bowl and the playoffs, then all games, will be pay per view or require some sort of membership (like NFL Sunday Ticket). Say it ain't so,,...
Zeise
11:25
I am surprised we aren’t there already to be honest. I’m surprised every NFL game isn’t on pay per view only except maybe the Sunday and Monday Night games

11:26
Hi Paul, do you have any thoughts on the Josh Donaldson-Tim Anderson “Jackie” controversy?  Thank you.

As I say quite often, we have become a stupid society and this is an example. People need to grow up

Yeah since you and walls are drunks. Hows about i come down that poster gazeebo and kick your butt buddy? Walls said he'd quit drinking. Especially on air you guys shouldn't drink so much
Zeise
11:28
That’s quite a word salad. Have another drink.

Paul, will the Steelers address conditioning in a different way this year?  Lots of hamstring pulls last year as I recall.
Zeise
11:29
It is like the Ravens with all of their injuries - they apparently changed their head trainer. I don’t think that is the case with the Steelers as they have pretty much the same training staff

Paul, how about a good old......"they did what"? Last weekend Pirates GM Cherrington said that he and mangement were happy with the "improvement" shown by the team, so far this season.  After the St. Louis 18-4 blowout he is now saying that all he and management want is to see the Pirates WIN!  Hmmmmm?????  Your thoughts??
Zeise
11:30
They have been saying this for three years. And my counter would be, all I want is to see the team win as well.

Paul, is Diontae Johnson disgruntled about his contract or lack of a new contract?  Will he be a distraction to the team and is he worth it?
Zeise
11:31
I don’t think so I think he is fine. I expect both sides to move a little bit and get a deal done, it seems like that is where it is all heading

Hey Paul thanks for your chats! Have you or your colleagues interviewed Mason regarding the acquisition of Tribisky and Pickett and what it basically says about his future with the Steelers? I'm sure he is very disappointed. If the Steelers could get a 4th or a 5th for him I would make the trade now. Would you keep him around through training camp to see if a desperate team will overpay for him or cut bait now?
Zeise
11:33
He took the high road, said that there has always been competition and he will prepare for the season the same we always have

Your column about the Steelers wasting time giving Mason Rudolph reps got me to thinking about this. They did not know when they signed Trubisky that Pickett would be available when they drafted. If they'd known they could get Pickett do you think they'd have done the Trubisky deal? And if the really think, after watching practices, that Pickett is their guy it might make more sense to throw him in, as New England's done with Mac Jones, keep Rudolph as a back up, and trade Trubisky, who would bring a better return than Rudolph.
Zeise
11:33
I do because I think they wanted a veteran to take Rudolph’s spot, whatever that spot is
