Paul,  It is hard to believe the Steeler's FO is as confident as they say regarding Ben coming back to the level he was.  With the type of surgery and his age that is asking a lot.  I hope there looking at Vet to come in just in case MR flounders again.  How do you see it playing out?  Thanks.
Zeise
12:06
I think they have no choice. It is either Ben is back to a decent level or Matt Canada works a  miracle with Mason Rudolph. They can’t afford to sign another quarterback so that is their options. I think Ben will be back but will not be able to play at an elite level any more.

Paul, better odds; AB spends opening day of the 2020 season in jail or on an NFL roster?
Zeise
12:08
Unfortunate but we know the answer to this one. I dont think he will ever play another down in the NFL

Any chance Derrick Henry is a Steeler in 2020? JC just isnt cutting it
Zeise
12:09
No. They cannot afford him. It isnt even possible given their salary cap.

I had hopes for Duquesne at Rhode Island, and for a half it looked good, then the bottom dropped out.   Is Duquesne setting up their few fans for another late season swoon?
Zeise
12:11
No i think that it is hard to win conference games and from time to time teams lay an egg. Just a bad night at the office I think

You read way too much into my comment last week on Pitt and the athletic facility expansion.  My comment did not say anything about being upset that it didn't include a football stadium. I rather enjoy the amenities that Heinz Field offers rather than what an on campus stadium would have. I was merely asking a simple question that you used to try to make out as a Pitt fan that can't let go of the past.
Zeise
12:14
Yes it would be so far fetched to think a Pitt fam wants an on camlud stadium. My bad 🙄

Hi Paul-This is not a criticism but rather an observation...Be it out of loyalty or keeping their word, the Steelers don't seem to fire ANY coaches anymore. I believe they knew Haley was leaving for a year or so but kept him until his contract expired. I don't think Butler is the D-Coordinator anymore and Canada MIGHT have been hired because they are not satisfied with Fichtner. I have no idea why Danny Smith still has a job except maybe because he's still under contract? Either way, it's commendable but with talented players, the windows don't stay open all that long and this practice def seems more prevalent under Art II. Have you noticed this and what do you think?
Zeise
12:17
I agree in fact i wrote about this. The Steelers use their stability as a badge of honor but sometimes it hurts them. I think new voices, new ideas, new ways of looking at things and a fresh set of eyes can be a good thing. I wish they changed some assistants more than they do

Paul, many Pitt fans and some columinsts seem to think Pitt will have only a 5-7 win season again. Given the schedule Im optimistic that this can be special and win 9 or 10. Am I crazy to think this way with all the defensive talent that is coming back? Also another year for Kenny Pickett under Whiples offense?
Zeise
12:21
I agree with you - people should be extrmeley excited about next season. I love the defense. I think the offensive line will improve. I think a second year with Whipple will be great for Pickett. I could see a 10 or 11-win season but again that requires winning every game you are supposed to win and Pitt has yet to do that under Pat Narduzzi. This could be a great yewr for Pitt but they cant lose games to bad or mediocre teams

Read someone on Twitter claim the NFL is increasing the salary cap $20 millIon so therefore we can re-sign Bud. I myself have not heard this nor believe it But When will the NFL formally announce the salary cap change?
Zeise
12:23
It has to be soon because teams are putting together their budgets and plans for 2029

You think the Steelers reach out to Brown and try to get him some help?
Zeise
12:25
No but i would hope some of his friends on the team or guys who were his teammates and play elsewhere would try and help him. Some guys can’t be saved from themselves, though

Paul in your opinion if there is a Real Stud let say linebacker or safety with a much better rating by far than any Player on offense During the draft At our first pick, would you take him or has to be offense no matter what? Thanks
Zeise
12:29
The Steelers should take an offenisve lineman or a tight end. However, they could upgrade at safety next to Minkah Fitzpatrick and they could also use another inside linebacker to plant next to Bush for the next few years. It wouldnt be the worst thing if they got a stud at either spot.

Did the Pens do enough in their victory over the Bruins to suggest that they are the better team?
Zeise
12:33
I dont know about that but what it did show is they have no reason to fear Boston. It was imoortant tor them to win that game just to send a little message. They had just come off a loss to the Bruins so they needed to win. And they did and showed they can compete and beat anyone.

12:33
Hey Paul, when I return in 2020, should I buy into a more balanced Offense, or should I continue to just sling it 45 - 50 times a game?
Zeise
12:33
If you dont buy into a more balanced offense then you will prove you care
12:34
more about stats than about winning. If you throw it all over the yard every week the Steelers will e 7-9 or 8-8 and miss the playoffs again.

Hi Paul, love all of the Steeler's writers,  Where is Brian Batko?  Have not seen anything from him lately.
Zeise
12:36
Well he clearly has his piorities all wrong!!! His wife just had a baby and he thinks that means he gets to take time off to be with her and their new addition!! Doesnt he know that the Steelers beat never sleeps!
Greg
12:40
Were the Steelers good enough to make it through the post-season this year if Ben never got hurt? That way we would not have been chosen by Miami for the Fitzpatrick trade.
Would Andy Dalton be an upgrade at back-up QB?
Jason
12:40
Is the Steelers defense really "elite"? I thought they looked vulnerable against the run and it's hard to expect as many turnovers and splash plays as some of that comes down to how the ball bounces for you. Does getting a healthy Tuitt back and franchising Dupree set them up or do they need another piece or two?
Zeise
12:46
These are connected questions. Even with Roethlisberger the Steelers would not be a Super Bowl team. If they had Andy Dalton, they would have made the playoffs. But you are correct that if Ben was healthy there is no Fitzpatrick trade. As for the defense - a healthy Tuitt, Dupree back in the fold and another safety probably puts the Steelers defense in the category of the elite for next year. I think the pass rush is dominant and thats where it all starts for that unit

12:46
Most likely to make the NCAA tournament: Pitt, PSU, or Duquesne?
Zeise
12:46
Penn State followed by Duquesne and Pitt. I think Penn State is a lock unless they totally gag on themselves down the stretch

We know the Pirates stink.  The Pirates know they stink.  Why won't they just come out and say they're rebuilding and then commit to it?  No one wants this purgatory of 70-82 wins and the status quo.
Zeise
12:49
It is easier to say “we are new here and doing our due diligence to figure out what we have in our organization” than to say “we stink and we are rebuilding!” Theh have to try and sell SOME tickets.
Gene
12:51
Do you think the Pirates trade Marte before April?
Zeise
12:52
I do. I don’t think his market will get any higher than it is right now. And they are going to save $11 million by trading him now
