Padres Offseason In Review Chat

Hello, folks. Let's talk about those Padres.
Mike

If Grisham is unproductive, who gets the next opportunity in CF?  Dahl?  Trade?
Darragh McDonald
11:00
Engel could do it. But Tatis has also said he'd like to try center someday.

As a lifelong fan, I’m still speechless with what the padres are doing these days. With that being said, do you think it’s realistic they sign either Soto or Ohtani? I never want to put anything past AJ but I just don’t see how this would be possible.
Darragh McDonald
11:00
At this point, I don't really know where the line is for them. There have already been a few instances where I thought they couldn't do more and then they did. So, I don't think I'd rule anything out.

Do the padres look to extend my son, Snellzilla? If so what does an extension look like?
Darragh McDonald
11:02
It makes sense given they have some long-term uncertainty in the rotation.
Snell is just a year away from free agency though, so you'd have to essentially pay him free agent prices.
11:05
He's probably near the 100 million range this winter, I'd guess, depending on his season, of course.
11:06
He's better than the Jameson Taillon and Taijuan Walker types, who each got around 70.
Bob
11:07
Will musgrove be back before may
Darragh McDonald
11:07
Seems that way, yeah.
11:08
Latest reporting was that he was healing faster than expected and could be ready pretty early in April.
Ryan
11:08
Do you buy the narrative that Manny Machado wouldn't have signed with the Padres if they hadn't signed Eric Hosmer first, all other things equal?
Darragh McDonald
11:09
I think it could have played a part, sure. Players often talk about wanting to play somewhere with a commitment to winning. That kind of thing has to help to some degree, I would think.

Did the "That's What's In" guys really cost the Padres the 2022 NL pennant?

This is quite early for a chat lol

Sorry about that. It's just the way my schedule works.

Starting pitching seems to still be pretty mid for a team with WS aspirations. Their front three is solid, but they have a lot of question marks between Martinez, Lugo, and Wacha, non of whom are proven innings eaters (Wacha because of injury). Who are some possible trade targets they could be looking at come the trade deadline?
Darragh McDonald
11:13
Matthew Boyd, Michael Lorenzen, Rich Hill, Vince Velasquez, Jordan Lyles, Marcus Stroman, Drew Smyly, Zach Davies, Kyle Gibson are some that make sense now.
11:16
Depending on which teams are in or out come deadline time, we could see Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Chris Sale, Lucas Giolito, Johnny Cueto, Sonny Gray, Pablo Lopez, Tyler Mahle, Kenta Maeda, Martin Perez, Andrew Heaney, Chris Sale, James Paxton, Sean Manaea, Ross Stripling, Alex Wood, Alex Cobb and many more become available.
Who’s your padre?
11:17
will there ever be a hard cap due to seidler’s spending?
Darragh McDonald
11:18
Owners would love a hard cap and have wanted it for a long time, regardless of recent trends. But the players don't want it and it seems like a non-starter.

sorry, not team relative, desperate to know before opening day. 1. does a team must carry exact 13 pitchers? 2. does catcher's pickoff count into pickoff limit?
Darragh McDonald
11:19
There's a 13-pitcher maximum. Teams can carry less if they want but they almost never will. Teams always stretch their pitchers as much as possible and always want more arms.
11:20
For the second question, no, catchers can backpick as much as they want.
Manny Machado
11:20
The WBC is more important than the WS, believe me?
Darragh McDonald
11:21
You could ask 1000 baseball players this question and probably get very different answers, but I understand why someone would think that way. A person's country/ethnicity/origin is a core part of who they are. Whereas their major league baseball team is something they have little control over.
Gene Kingsale
11:21
Cap minimums should be enforced, not ceilings -- get the poor-me ownership groups like those behind the Reds et al out of the sport.
Darragh McDonald
11:22
I think the players would love a minimum but the owners have always taken the bargaining position that it needs to come with a maximum.
dont know what you're talking about
11:23
so what's That's What's In?
Darragh McDonald

Soto v Ohtani
11:23
Clearly nothing is out the window with big contracts in San Diego, but I'm curious what the fans in this chat think. Who would YOU want more long-term: Sota or Ohtani? Poll?
Darragh McDonald
11:24
Who would you rather the Padres sign?

Soto (52.4% | 77 votes)

Ohtani (47.6% | 70 votes)

What do you think the plan is with Cronenworth? He's moving to 1B this year after Xander signing. Do you envision this as a "let's see how he does before we extend him" kind of year. Or could he be traded?! (Hope not, love the Crone Zone).
Darragh McDonald
11:26
I don't know if they need to extend or trade him. He's 29 and still has three years of control. Really good player but not one of their most important.

That's What's In DID cost the Padres the NL Pennant!

Depth chart
11:27
What is the perceived depth order as padres at SS? Tatis has to be up their, right? Most of his "throwing errors" were Hosmer scared of his arm.
