Greetings, folks. Let's talk about those O's.
Let’s go John Angelos

Did the Orioles just not expect players to be so expensive this offseason? Seems like they walked onto Eutaw street with $5 and expected a sandwich from Boog’s and a Natty Boh

This is the best explanation I can come up with. If they didn't really plan to spend, why get everyone's hopes up by making promises?
It sorta seems like they thought they could get someone like Taillon on the cheap but then that didn't happen.

Best Free Agent fits for the O's in '24?  Are Urias and Ohtani in play?  What about Chapman and move Ginnar back to SS??
Let’s go John Angelos
5:01
Can you put the nail in the coffin on my hopes for Ohtani?
Darragh McDonald
5:02
I definitely wouldn't put the O's near the top of any Ohtani list. That being said, they have essentially nothing on the books.
I can't rule them out, except based on their self-imposed reputation.
Billionaires are liars
5:03
Is it foolish to have hopes for the future of the O's, given that their owner is hiding behind the "small market" facade?
Darragh McDonald
5:04
Those comments are not encouraging but the club is still stacked with young talent. I wouldn't say it's foolish to have hopes, no. The O's are well-positioned to be good for a long time, disappointing offseason notwithstanding.

does the window open in 2024?
Darragh McDonald
5:04
I guess it depends what you mean but I think it's open. They were in the playoff hunt until the very end of the season last year.

If the Orioles have a rough first half of the season, who do you think they should move at the deadline that could have value

I hope they're in 1st place, but surmising the O's are out of the race in late July... who is possible trade bait?  Santander would bring the best returns, no?  Frazier of he hits?
Darragh McDonald
5:06
It obviously depends how the individual players are performing, but the club would likely lean towards moving the guys closer to free agency.
5:07
So, Santander, Mullins, Frazier, Hays, Mateo, Gibson, McCann, Givens.

From the off-season review article: “Regardless of how or why it happened, the O’s are going into 2023 with a fairly similar roster to last year, which isn’t really a bad thing.”
Darragh McDonald
5:07
Yep, I wrote that. And I think it's true. The team is still in a great position for the long haul.
5:08
I just felt I had to write about Elias since he was pretty direct. He said the payroll would go up "significantly" and they would be much more aggressive in free agency, trades, etc.
None of that really happened.

Which players should we expect to be traded? Santander, Urias, Mullins, Hays, and Mateo have all had their share of rumors. Do we actually see any of them dealt this year?
Darragh McDonald
5:09
If the club is out of contention, sure. It also depends how the prospects are doing.
Ghost of Juan Bell
5:09
Have there been any recent examples of trading top 100 hitting prospects for top 100 pitching prospects?  Lots of potential infielders but not much pitching wise behind Grayson and DL
Birdland
5:09
As rare as they are, is there a prospect-prospect deal the Orioles could swing that would send infielders for a big pitching prospect?
Darragh McDonald
5:10
Gallen for Jazz is one recent example off the top of my head. But they are quite rare.
If a team has a prospect in their system, it's usually because they valued that player higher than everyone else.
One sec. Someone is getting in a fight outside my window.
5:11
Okay, sorry about that.
Best guess
5:11
What are the chances they come out looking smart after not “over spending” on free agents this year. Is there enough talent on the FA market the next couple of years to supplement their roster and challenge for the division?
Darragh McDonald
5:12
Well, outside Ohtani, next winter's free agent class is pretty weak.
The good news for the O's is that there's lots of pitching, which they will likely need.

Who won the fight??
Darragh McDonald
5:13
It turned out it was just someone on the phone.
Let’s go John Angelos
5:13
What is the likelihood the Orioles extend BOTH Adley and Gunnar?
Darragh McDonald
5:14
The extension question will be an interesting one. I was looking into this the other day and I don't think they've done an extension since J.J. Hardy in 2014.
The likelihood of extensions is always hard to peg because it depends on the individual players. Some want to lock in future security while others want to go for the ultimate free agent payday.
5:16
The O's have enough open space on their books that they could extend both players if they really wanted. But it depends how Adley and Gunnar feel. Both of them got sizeable bonuses as high draft picks and probably don't need the money right this second, which gives them leverage.
Donovan
5:16
Okay so maybe the O’s missed the mark on FA for ‘23… I saw you grab some questions on who the franchise offloads if they have a poor first half. That’s far less interesting to me than who maybe they acquire if they have an amazing first half, though. Thoughts?
Darragh McDonald
5:16
It seems like it would most likely be pitching.
5:17
It would depend who is available, which obviously depends how other clubs are doing. Matt Boyd? Marcus Stroman? Lucas Giolito?
