Good afternoon! It's been a wild season to say the least. I'm happy to be here and talking Pirates with you guys and gals. Let's get started.

is Clint Hurdle really going to be the only coach fired??
nubyjas wilborn
12:06
No. Ray Searage told our Jason Mackey that he expects to be fired. I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't other moves as well.
Who Cares Anymore
12:06
If Nutting & his Stoogies don’t care to invest in a competitive team......why should we or anyone else care?  They suck at drafting & developing prospects & they don’t invest in payroll despite Major League Baseball experiencing record revenue streams.

Your dollar and time are your votes. If you don't feel the team is giving their best then you shouldn't give yours. However, I and I know this is going to get me clowned. Bob does want to win. The problem is he wants to do the most affordable way possible when it comes to signing players. I do think they've realized that their way of player dev needs to be revised. We'll see how they go forward.

Congrats on your first season with the Bucs. Look forward to your contributions. Gator is a fav of mine!

12:11
Thanks! Believe it or not, it's been mostly fun. Obviously reporting on the Vazquez stuff was stressful. But for the most part I enjoyed the challenges of finding angles on a team that was losing so much in the second half.

Have the Pirates interviewed anyone yet for manager or contacted any they would like to interview?
nubyjas wilborn
12:14
Not that we know of. A lot of the potential external candidates are in the playoffs so they can't talk to them. Expect it to be quiet for the next few days.

I am fed up that awful Bob Nutting left Neal and Frank in place. Neal's drafting and developing has been atrocious!! Is Nutting that clueless that he is really happy with those guys?
nubyjas wilborn
12:15
Bob knows. He also doesn't and frankly shouldn't care. If he feels that Neal is a good GM and trusts him then he should keep him even if it makes fans angry. However, you have a choice to make as well.

Barring any moves, the starting rotation will be, on paper, the worst in the entire league, no?  I like Musgrove, but if he’s your ace.....
nubyjas wilborn
12:17
Miami is worse and there are others. However, barring improvement from Archer, Williams, and Keller it won't be great.
The 3 Stoogies Survive
12:17
Nubyjas, I’d really like to win the Powerball. That happening is as likely as Nutting “wanting to win.”  Shame on you for defending nutting in any way.
nubyjas wilborn
12:23
I don't think that's accurate nor was I "defending" Bob. I know it's easy to kick the team and Lord knows they have flaws but I don't believe that Bob is an inherently evil man seeking to destroy your baseball fun.

Good to know Bob really wants to win - I also want a new SL500 Mercedes but at the cost of a subcompact Kia.  We know the player payroll is chronically low  compared to other teams - any data on what is being invested in player development compared to other franchises?
nubyjas wilborn
12:26
At one point they were seventh in spending on non-player payroll. The Pirates have one of the largest analytic departments. They're spending a lot internationally and other areas. The problem is the other teams in the top-10 in those areas are also spending on the field. For years, the Yankees and Red Sox most spent on the field now they're spending the off the field too.

Agree with 3 Stoogies Nubyjas. Why would you write that Nutting 'shouldn't' care? Every time I try and give you a chance you disappoint me with your strange and ridiculous comments more and more.
nubyjas wilborn
12:28
Would you run your business based on what fans think? I wouldn't and he shouldn't. Notice I didn't say he should've kept Neal. I'm saying that fan angst shouldn't rule his decisions. Also, the same way, I don't care about the "chances" a person does or doesn't give me when they aren't man or woman enough to put their name on same comment, annoyed. :)

12:28
What do I need to to do to get the Pirates to hire me? Am I crazy to want yhe job?
nubyjas wilborn
12:29
You'll want too much money.
burt reynolds
12:29
Given that they are looking at being a budget team as well as the weak farm system, how can the Pirates get help at catcher and with pitching?
nubyjas wilborn
12:30
They'll have to spend and there will be options. But they can't come back with Diaz & Stallings if they're serious about winning.

12:30
I certainly hope the Pirates go outside of the organization for the new manager. In my opinion there needs to be a fresh perspective. Jason Kendall May be well respected, but As I recall was never on a winning team. Not to say that was entirely his fault. Just think we need someone from a organization with a history of winning. Thoughts?
nubyjas wilborn
12:34
I don't think Kendall will get much consideration. I'd be open to Jeff Banister, he had success in Texas. He also seems to have learned from what failed there. I don't see him as Clint 2.0, but that hire won't inspire fans. I also agree with you that someone who has won and knows what it takes to win is important. There are a lot of potential options out there.

Forbes listed Nutting I believe as the 10th richest owner in mlb. The avg payroll for mlb this season was around $145 million. The Pirates spend half of that. So please tell me why Bob Nutting couldn't up the payroll to about $120 million? It would still be below average but it would allow the team to sign some much needed players and show the fans that the owner really does care about winning! Am I missing something here?
nubyjas wilborn
12:36
You make a fair point, Don. The payroll was extremely low, however, they were right there with Tampa and Oakland. Payroll is a factor, but there is a lot more that the Pirates could fix. Also, look at all the money the Phillies and Mets spent, they're at home too.
Evan
12:36
If you had to predict the future manager outside of the organization who would be your pick?
nubyjas wilborn
12:38
I'd want someone like Twins bench coach Derek Shelton.
Searage
12:38
Am I getting fired, or just not getting a new contract?
nubyjas wilborn
12:38
whatever makes it easier to sleep at night.
An Observer
12:38
Isn’t an indictment against Larry, Moe & Curly (nutting & his clowns) that other small market teams are smarter than this group of morons because they (Oakland, Milwaukee, Tampa) have consistently outperformed the Pirates on the fielded.
nubyjas wilborn
12:40
Such rude language. But yes, a fair critique can be made since other teams are overcoming the obstacles.
Wayward
12:40
How quickly do you see this manager process playing out?  Are there any candidates you think they think enough of to wait throughout the playoffs to speak with?
nubyjas wilborn
12:41
it could be slow.
Wayward
12:41
Are there any specific areas within player development that you see are the primary culprits?
nubyjas wilborn
12:41
defense. pitching as well.
Hernandez, K
12:41
Has JB maxed out his defensive improvement? If so, how far away is that DH change?
nubyjas wilborn
12:42
I'd hate to say that. He works so hard. As far as the DH, it'll be coming in the next few years, I believe.
Dear Annoyed
12:42
Because when teams--who know what they are doing--kowtow to fans, they are much more likely make bad decisions. Quite simple.
