Happy Sunday, all. Paul is running a bit late today, so you're stuck with me for the next little bit. Can I get some score predictions?
Bruce

Why can't Ben Roethlisberger end his career with grace and simply announce that he's retiring after this season?  By deferring to make an announcement, he reinforces some people's assertion that he continues to be a drama queen.

You never really know how free agency will go. Or whether a team might be desperate enough to give him a chance behind a better line at a premium rate. That seems pretty unlikely given his analytics. But not completely out of the realm of possibility. Or, maybe he's just hamming it up as is his wont.

Big Ben was destined to be a Steelers QB. Perfect QB for Steelers type play. Blue collar tough. To me, he was the Jack Lambert of the offense.

People forget the hits he took early in his career. I'm a subscriber to the theory that the defenses carried those Super Bowl teams. But he was the right fit at quarterback. Not sure some of his contemporaries would have fared nearly as well.

Thanks for the chats Paul. Always a great read. My question is what criteria do the Steelers use when evaluating a QB? Did they luck out with picking Ben or is there something deeper in their evaluation? Same thought process with Mason R?
Adam Bittner
12:55
Think that's a difficult one to answer, Big John. Ben was an original. No one's played the position exactly like him. If he's the standard in the eval process, they're probably going to be looking for his style for a while. At this point, I do think they need a guy who can move and buy time to find receivers downfield.  That would open up the playbook a lot compared to where it's been the past couple of years.

I would respectfully contend that Bobby Layne was the Jack Lambert of the Steelers' offense.

I wonder if Tommy Maddox is still bitter about losing his job back in 2004?
The only quarterback I can recall playing like Ben (and this is going back aways) would have been Roman Gabriel of the old Rams.

Well before my time, Curtis!

Is it assumed Omar Kahn will become the GM if GM Colbert retires ?
Adam Bittner
1:03
I wouldn't assume anything other than that he'll probably get a look. Might be a desire for a new approach to team building.

In light of all the recent hype, I half-expect the Catholic Church to canonize Roethlisberger.  St. Ben.

Other than stubbornness, why would the Steelers go back to Harvin today? His replacement has better stats.
Adam Bittner
1:06
They did invest a draft pick in him and might want one more look before the offseason. Best I can come up with.

Gee Bruce, Ben is not Catholic.

Curtis from Iowa

Agreed Adam, I don't think Kevin Colbert coming (way back when) was expected.

Our Ray Fittipaldo is saying that was not ruled a sack. So I guess we need to hold the congratulations.
