I'm not sure how the Weekend Chat can properly function in a world without any Jo Adell trade rumors, but we'll soldier on. We'll let your questions build up before we begin....
Astros
8:22
Do you think the Astros can actually win the divison?
Mark P
8:23
Not only "can" they win, but I'd call them the favorites at this point.  The Mariners seem to be falling apart, the Rangers can't seem to sustain much momentum, and Houston has somewhat quietly been one of the better teams in baseball for a couple of months now.
Jays
8:24
Do you think the Jays can make the playoffs and in the off-season they need to sign an outfielder. Do you think Arozarena works?
Mark P
8:26
Knowing how Toronto's front office operates, they'll absolutely be in on Arozarena.  The 2027 outfield consists of Lukes, Barger, Santander (who will more likely be a regular DH) and guys like Pinango or Schneider who won't really be considered for any kind of regular roles.  Signing a proven bat like Arozarena makes a lot of sense.

Max Meyer here. Do I play again in 2026?
Mark P

Hi Max!  I'm not sure why you're asking me and not the Marlins' doctors, but since I also went to med school*, we should know more next week when you're due another check-up

So much Skubal talk.   Experts said top 50, top 100…. Received 25, 68.  Could they have gotten a better deal and from who?   What?
Mark P
8:32
Rosenthal and Passan made some pretty good breakdowns of the Skubal trade talks the other day.  Basically what it came down to is that the Dodgers' offer of ready-for-the-majors pitching (Ryan) and hitting (Hope) plus another team was more to Detroit's tempo.  Maybe it just came down to the Tigers preferring Hope to Luis Pena as the centerpiece, especially since the Tigers already have McGonigle and Max Anderson lined up as the infield cornerstones

Will the Pirates fire their GM and their manager ?
Mark P
8:35
Kelly was given a contract extension of some length last September.  Cherington's contract runs through 2027.

These details notwithstanding, I think another losing record leads to both being fired.  The Pirates were strongly pushing to at least get over .500 this year.

So good to hear you talk about the end of the Angels/Jo Adell trade rumors.. finally..
Mark P

I'm just sad I wasn't working at the time of the deal, for the full circle moment

Thoughts on the Foster Griffin trade? Seems like the Nationals got pitching depth, but also a bit underwhelming of a return.
Mark P
8:37
The trade package seemed pretty good, and I'm sure if you'd told the Nats in January that this would be the return on a Griffin deadline deal, they would've been doing cartwheels

In this off-season, thoughts on Giants trading Webb for youth, but part of the deal includes dealing away one of these guys (contracts) as well: Adamas, Devers, or Chapman's?
Mark P
8:38
Trading a top trade asset like Webb just to help move an underwater contract would be a misfire.
8:39
I doubt the Giants move Webb at all, and if so, they surely wouldn't water down their trade return by including a big contract as part of trade packages

The Tigers are only one game out of the wild card spot…. Do they get the final spot?   Or who’s your guess?
Mark P
8:40
Maybe my favorite stat of the last few days is the fact that Detroit has the best run differential (+87) in the entire American League, and the fifth-best in all of baseball.
It is anyone's guess as to how the AL playoff field works out, but the Tigers could easily still win the division, let alone the wild card.

Walker Jenkins.. odds on getting called up THIS week in time for Twins Philly field of dreams game??
Mark P
8:45
Jenkins is hitting .280/.375/.463 with six homers over 251 PA at the Triple-A level.  It's pretty good stuff, even if his xwOBA is much lower than his wOBA.  There's no doubt he'll be in the majors at some point this year, so it's just a matter of when the Twins decide to the time is right.

Frankly, bringing Jenkins to the majors for the FOD game might not be ideal, as the team might prefer a more "normal" circumstance for his big league debut

Will Cleveland trade Jo Adell this coming… just kidding. Anyway, is it safe to safe the Halos are officially in a rebuild?
Mark P
8:47
Maybe not a capital-R Rebuild, as that would've meant Detmers and probably Neto also would've been dealt at the deadline.  But certainly the Angels are acting more like a traditional rebuilding team under Mozeliak than they have in decades, and their deadline moves seemed pretty sensible.

Whose front office do you raid for the next GM of the A's?
Mark P
8:49
It'll be interesting to see if the A's maybe promote a familiar face from within, or if they go with an entirely fresh new PBO/GM on the cusp of the Las Vegas era.  Hiring someone from the usual suspects (the Dodgers, Rays, Guardians, Brewers, etc.) for front office hirings makes sense, but there's some intrigue here since this is Fisher's first-ever real GM search.

Making a second mound visit in the first inning...with nobody warming up...has to at least tie the record, right?
Mark P
8:50
Undoubtedly a bad move for Venable, and just an honest mistake.  One he surely won't make again.
Baystars

Sean Reynolds back to the MLB next year? He is having an excellent season in the NPB.
Mark P
8:55
MLB teams have undoubtedly taken notice, and Reynolds should draw some interest in free agency.

That said, one of the many ripple effects of the impending lockout is how players (both U.S.-born and Japanese) coming from Japan may view this offseason as any kind of ideal time to come to North American baseball.  If the BayStars have interest in a reunion, Reynolds might prefer to just sign a new deal and stay in NPB rather than be in free agent limbo during an extended lockout

I know it hasn’t been one week yet, but I’m one of the few that wasn’t that ecstatic for the Cubs return in their deadline deals. Am I crazy?
Mark P
8:58
The Cubs did pretty well in my view.  Gausman/Holmes will help the rotation quite a bit, Garrett is a bit of a lottery ticket, and Zeferjahn bolsters the pen.  The bullpen is also boosted in general by Gausman/Holmes pushing any of the excess starters into relief duty.

Will seaver king be the third baseman for the nationals next year?
Mark P
9:00
We shouldn't rule out an MLB debut for King "this" year, just so he can get his feet wet in the majors.  Returning to lockout talk, however, the Nationals might not want to start King's service clock with a work stoppage pending, which might be why he's delayed until 2027.

In general, King should be in line for regular playing time by next year at the latest.

Will Zac Veen get called up this year?
Mark P
9:03
One would imagine so, since (obligatory "PCL is a hitter-friendly league" mention) Veen is crushing Triple-A pitching.

His longer-term future in Colorado is an interesting topic.  Because he wasn't drafted or developed by the current front office, I wonder if Veen might be some kind of trade chip, even if the Rox absolutely aren't in any position yet to be moving young talent for proven MLB players.  Still, giving Veen a long look in the majors seems like a win-win whether or not the Rockies see him as a long-term piece or not

Isn't it pretty crazy that Mookie Betts has SIX career 3 homer games??
