The Weekend Chat has been launched! We'll take a minute to let the questions pile up, then get answerin'
Brady
7:17
Any chance this dreadful start in Colorado leads to any real changes in the way the organization operates in the front office as well perhaps an outside hire and less owner control
Mark P
7:18
It is possible this season is a wakeup call for Dick Monfort, and he'll make the decision to entirely shake up the organization with new hires and fresh ideas.  That's what it will take for the Rockies to really get back on track, since their current method of operations is simply not working.

You'd think Monfort would've realized this at least a couple of years ago, however.
Orioles
7:19
We're gonna get something nice for Sugano at the deadline aren't we?
Mark P
7:20
Assuming the Orioles are deadline sellers, Sugano would be a logical trade chip, but I wouldn't expect a haul.  He's a rental player for one, and he is outperforming his peripherals by a significant margin.  Teams also won't be wowed by Sugano's lack of strikeouts.
Cards
7:22
What a run they are on, Nolan gonna get traded you think?
Mark P
7:23
Speaking of players outperforming their secondary metrics by a bit, Arenado is hitting well despite a real lack of power or hard contact.

In a vacuum, the Cardinals would likely still love to trade him if they could work something out.  But, with the team on a hot streak and hoping to contend, moving Arenado now also has to factor in the ripple effect of demoralizing a clubhouse.
Swole
7:23
What will the cardinals do at the deadline if they keep this up?
Mark P
7:25
STL has rarely ever been huge deadline buyers under Mozeliak, so my instinct is that probably doesn't change much this year if the team is contending by July's end.  It's maybe unlikely that there's any added aggression because it's Mozeliak's last year in charge of the front office.
Brewer Fan
7:26
Sending Myers down was interesting. He can't be down too long right?
Mark P
7:28
Probably not, but optioning him is a canny move on the Brewers' part.  It seems like a good way of getting in front of some struggles before they translate to Myers' bottom-line results, because his 3.86 ERA is masking some very shaky metrics.

Between Thursday's offday and Woodruff coming back next weekend, Milwaukee has some flexibility to give Myers some time to regroup.  Given how badly the team was hurting for pitching a month ago, it's a great sign that the Brewers now have a bit more depth to make moves like optioning Myers.

7:29
We're at the quarter pole now, and which teams have been the biggest surprise in the positive sense and in the negative sense?
Mark P
7:30
Most positive surprise is probably the Giants, most negative has to be the Orioles
Devers Drama
7:30
I assume it would still be highly unlikely because of his contract, but is there at least a sliver of a chance the Red Sox could shop Devers due to how anti-team his attitude has been this year?  He’s performing on the field but I’d imagine both the front office and the fan base have soured on him at least a little bit, plus the whole weird “both my shoulders are shot” situation last season.
Mark P
7:32
I cited Devers as a darkhorse trade candidate during this past offseason, and obviously a deal didn't happen, nor is one probably likely to happen.

At the end of the day, Devers can still really hit.  I don't think either Devers or the Red Sox have come off great in this whole mess, but I do think cooler heads will prevail and it will blow over.
And you're right in that Devers' contract is so large that it's hard to find a clearcut trade partner.
Nate lowe
7:33
What is his trade value at the deadline thinking the red sox among others would have interest..assuming devers stays at dh
Mark P
7:35
Lowe is under arb control for 2026, so he wouldn't just be a one-year rental.  Since the Red Sox presumably still want Casas back when healthy, Lowe might not be an ideal fit for what the Sox would want in a stopgap first baseman, though of course Boston could also shop Lowe (or Casas?) during the offseason.

If the Nationals are looking to sell at the deadline, Josh Bell might be the better trade piece to be moved as a fit in Boston.  Bell is struggling yet weirdly, that might not matter too much, given how he has shown that he can swing wildly from cold to hot at the drop of a hat
Garrett
7:37
Is Dave Martinez safe in DC? The terrible bullpen isn't his fault, or the lack of money spent in recent years, but could there be a shakeup in Washington? Maybe someone on his coaching staff instead?
Dave Martinez
7:37
What % chance do I have of being fired this year?
Mark P
7:37
Fairly slim.  The Nats aren't playing well right now but Martinez is Rizzo's guy, and the organization has retained Martinez on several contracts now.
Its Over
7:38
At what point to the Braves call it what it is and start trading off players?
Mark P
7:39
The 2021 Braves were still under .500 at the start of August.  Much more challenging division four years later, of course, but there's enough invested in this team that they would have to completely crater by July for a selloff to happen
Jays Fan
7:41
In your opinion, did the Jays blunder the Vladdy signing? Probably could have paid half 2 years ago, or a quarter 5 years ago. Thoughts?
Mark P
7:44
Vlad has always been seen as a premium prospect, and his dad was a multi-millionaire star.  Vladdy Jr. therefore had plenty of "bet on himself" security and maybe didn't see the need to sign a major extension early in his career.  Between the likelihood of high arbitration salaries and an early entry into free agency, Guerrero has always figured he'd be getting some big paydays early in his career anyway, plus the potential for a major long-term deal in relatively short order.
7:45
Also, two years ago, Guerrero was in the midst of an underwhelming 2023 season, and didn't look like the best best for a $500MM investment.  And five years ago, the pandemic was raging and many teams (the Jays in particular) were unclear about how business as usual would proceed
Mendozalicious
7:46
Robert seems like an ideal fit for this current Mets club. Would be willing to bet his bat would come around in a lineup with some actual protection. What would it take to get a deal done?
Luis Robert
7:46
Any chance I bring back a big haul in a trade?
Chris
7:46
Would you trade for Luis Robert in exchange for Blade Tidwell if you were David Stearns?
Mark P
7:48
Tidwell is an interesting prospect but not a premium name, so sure, the Mets shouldn't balk too hard about moving him.  But obviously the White Sox are aiming higher than Tidwell as a primary piece of a trade return for Robert, and I don't think the Sox pull the trigger on such a deal until Robert gets more consistent at the plate.
Robert is still not hitting, so teams surely aren't lining up to present the Sox with major offers
Back Pages
7:53
I know you can't predict results in the majors, but is Bubba Chandler's pedigree such that he could stick and be a meaningful performer this year for the Pirates?
Mark P
7:54
Chandler is an elite enough prospect that nobody would be surprised if he was an instant hit and a ROY contender.
Not corner
7:55
What options do the Dodgers have(besides Arenado) to get more production from 3rd base than Muncy is giving them?
Mark P
7:55
If Kim plays well and Muncy continues to struggle to the point that LA reduces his playing time, Hernandez can be moved over to take some of the 3B workload
Snitker
7:57
All these manager firings? Am I in trouble?
Mark P
7:57
Atlanta's situation is vastly different than the situations in Colorado/Pittsburgh.  The Braves have a winning record since their disaster of an opening week, and I maintain that the team will continue to be fine since there's so much talent on hand.
7:58
In Snitker's particular case, I also don't see the Braves unceremoniously firing a guy who has been working for them for almost 50 years.  It would take an absolute cratering in the standings for that to happen, and (once again) this team is too good for that to happen
Bryce Miller
8:00
Am I just a league average guy who lucked into a career year last year or am I just off to a slow start?
Mark P
8:02
Miller's home/road splits have always been a red flag, and today marked a rare occasion that he got rocked during a home start.  Miller struck me as more of a decent mid-to-back end starter more than an ace type, yet (today notwithstanding) he has been more inconsistent than outright bad this season.
