Sean Murphy

I’ve seen a lot of people say that the Murphy trade is the worst one during the AA tenure (the Tommy Milone one back in 2020 is the worst imo) since he gave up Contreras. Murphy obviously hasn’t hit as well as many have projected and has had some bad injury luck, but the Braves gave up ~ one less run with him catching last year than with other catchers, albeit with a smaller sample size. At the time of the trade, it’s a 50/50 chance that Contreras takes the necessary steps forward. On top of that, Mark Bowman reported last December in his newsletter that some Braves pitchers didn’t want to throw to him. What’s your thoughts?

The Kelenic trade (that also took on a bunch of unwanted Mariners contracts) stands out as a miss so far, since Kelenic just hasn't gotten much going as a Major League player.  But, just as with the Murphy deal, it's too soon to call any of these total misses.  With Murphy especially, plenty of time on that contract to turn things around.

Bro, this clarke Schmidt stuff can't be real

If Clarke Schmidt is out long term who steps in
Mark P
7:24
Yankees fans will be holding their breath until Schmidt's bullpen session tomorrow, but if he gets through that, it's probably not a big concern.

Naturally, it's very understandable to worry given how hard the NYY rotation has already been hit with injuries.  If Schmidt is out, then likely the answer is that both Carrasco and Warren get rotation spots

If it’s true that 9 teams are hot after Cease, would the padres be missing a big opportunity to drive competition in the market by not trading him now?
Mark P
7:25
The Padres are also trying to win in 2025, which makes a Cease trade particularly difficult since SD wants at least one player that can help them win now.  It's tricky to thread that needle, especially this close to Opening Day.

Do you think Buster would extend either Yaz or LWJ if they have a good first half?
Mark P
7:27
Wade almost certainly no, with Eldrige on the horizon.  Yaz also probably not, unless it's something like a one-year deal.

This is speculative, of course, since we've never really seen how Posey will operate yet as a front office boss.

What do you think has to happen for the A's to emerge as a playoff contender this season?
Mark P
7:30
Big steps forward from the pitching staff, plus at least one or two more bats need to break out to support Rooker and Butlre.

Wouldn’t the White Sox be better off moved to a different city if and when they get sold?
Mark P
7:31
Chicago is one of the biggest cities in North America.  Even with the caveat that they're splitting the market with the Cubs, even "half" of Chicago is still bigger than just about any market the Sox could possibly move

I like the idea of Torkelson playing the OF.  The Tiger outfield is extremely fragile.  Greene misses time... Meadows misses time... Vierling is hurt.  Perez got dinged up.  Tork has always been healthy and if he remembered how to hit, it would give them an outfielder they can pencil in every day.  If he forgets how to hit again, you always have some back-up infielder that doesn't do much of anything to play out there.
Mark P
7:33
Hinch was very clear that Torkelson will be a once-in-a-while outfielder at best, since it's very clear Tork won't exactly be Ichiro out there on the grass.
Carpenter will be more OF time than Torkelson, who will largely be sticking to 1B/DH if he does hit well enough to stick in the lineup.

I know a work stoppage is probably going to happen after the current cba. Any chance of both parties realizing that this is bad for the game and come to some sort of agreement?
Mark P
7:34
I would love to see common sense prevail and a CBA get reached early, but a work stoppage is seeming increasingly inevitable

The Reds made the two strangest signings last offseason (Pagan, Candelario). Who made the strangest one this year?
Mark P
7:36
The Candelario signing makes sense in hindsight, actually, since Nick Krall was correct to be cautious about his young infielders going into 2024.  The only problem was, of course, that Candelario also struggled, leaving the Reds on the hook for a big salary.
7:37
As for this winter's "strangest" signing....one that comes to mind is the Mariners just going back to Polanco again.

Are the Rays still based in the Tampa Bay area 5 years from now?
Mark P
7:40
It's a fascinating question, and the possibility of a shorter-term stay (as in another decade) at the Trop might encourage all parties to kick the can down the road a bit.  It's a little amazing to me that things seem to have soured between Rays ownership and the city/county so quickly, so there's a possibility the team is still in Tampa but just with a new owner, rather than the Rays moving to a new city

might Arenado be worth more on the trade market near the deadline (his expensive year mostly paid for, and perhaps improved hitting)?
Mark P
7:42
Quite possible, though his no-trade clause remains the biggest obstacle.
Angels CF
7:42
Adell and Moniak not having good ST. If this continues into season could Trout move bac to CF? Could Lugo end up in CF?
Mark P
7:43
Trout is being moved in order to keep him healthy, so I don't think the Angels are going to move him back to CF just because others are struggling.

Is Stanton going to retire? He said he cant do basic tasks at home. Is Meadows injury worrisome long term or do the reports seem to say he will be fine?
Mark P
7:45
As I understand Meadows' injury, it's the kind of nerve problem that could continue to linger, or it might just completely go away one day and he'll be fine.  That makes things pretty frustrating for Meadows and the Tigers, of course, since there's no way to really gauge how might longer this might take to get him onto the field.
7:46
Stanton surely won't retire with so much money still coming his way, unless he and the Yankees were work out some kind of financial settlement.  But there's also the fact that this particular injury is probably more frustrating than ever to Stanton.....he finally had a relatively healthy season, helped the team win a pennant, and now he's set back again.

I think a bad contract for bad contract trade makes sense with an Arenado trade. Is there a bad contract that the Cardinals could take that would save them money and make sense
Mark P
7:48
The Cardinals' interest in moving Arenado is 90 percent related to getting as much of his contract as possible off the books.  Taking another pricey deal in return doesn't help STL much at all.
Get well soon, Cole
7:49
what is it gonna take for us to acquire Alcantara without trading Dominguez, jones, or Lombard?
Mark P
7:51
The Marlins are quite reasonably going to want a haul back for Sandy, and I don't see them accepting a Yankees offer that doesn't have at least one premium prospect.  Jones might not even fall into that category any more, following his underwhelming 2024 season.

Do you think Chicago moves Robert by end of May if he's having a good szn to start the year?
Mark P
7:52
It's possible, if the Sox want to strike while the iron is hot.  But, rival teams might also need more than two months of information on Robert to ensure he's healthy before agreeing to what would be a big trade package
