The Weekend Chat has been launched!  We'll wait a minute for some questions to pile up, then get cracking....

Cease getting traded before the start of the season?
Mark P
8:31
Probably not, it feels like the ship has sailed on the team making a big blockbuster like that.  Reports indicate that Suarez might still get moved, but the Padres seem prepared to make one big run with (most of) the current roster to try and win a ring
Tony V
8:33
Do the Braves make any bullpen moves that move the needle before the season starts?
Mark P
8:34
David Robertson is still out there, and you'd think Atlanta would be one of the many teams that could use him for some high-leverage innings.  Since I just mentioned Suarez, that's probably not a bit for salary reasons, as well as the difficulty of two NL contenders lining up on a trade.
8:35
Worth noting that the Braves have a lot of veterans in camp on minors deals, so it wouldn't be surprising to see any of them step up as valuable contributors this season

Sandy showed today he is pretty much back to normal. Is that all it will take for Bendix's phone to start ringing? Will he be moved before the season starts?
Mark P
8:36
Opposing teams will need more than just one ST outing, but if Alcantara does get off to a decent start, he'll certainly be shopped. As we saw with Arraez last year, the Marlins aren't shy about making an early-season trade.

Can anyone possibly make an argument that the Cardinal's offseason made any sense?
Mark P
8:38
It feels like in four months or so, Derrick Goold or Katie Woo or someone is going to write a heck of a story detailing exactly what was happening behind the scenes of this strange Cardinals offseason.  Baffling that they've basically stood pat with the roster, and rather abruptly gone from "we're focusing on young talent" to "well, maybe we'll give it one more shot?"
8:39
Even if the Arenado trade doesn't happen, fine, that's a tough beat given the circumstances.  But why not move Helsley, or Fedde, or any of the other veterans who don't have no-trade protection?

Have there been any rumors about extensions for young O's guys (Gunnar, Adley, Westburg, etc.)?  I haven't seen anything.
Mark P
8:42
Surely some talks have taken place, but the team (wisely) isn't making a public show of it.  It'll be fascinating to see which of the team's young stars get locked up on extensions, since that'll be another important final step in the Orioles' emergence from their rebuild.

What kind of package would the Pirates expect if they were to make Mitch Keller and/or David Bednar available considering Keller is signed for 4 years and Bednar has two seasons of control left?
Mark P
8:44
Bednar is hard to evaluate since his 2024 season was so bad.  Surely some teams would have interest in a buy-low trade, but the Pirates just as likely aren't going to give away Bednar for peanuts since he might rebound this year.

Keller has a good deal of trade value, but it's not great in a bigger-picture sense if the Pirates are trading away a guy just a year after signing him to a hefty extension.

Who are your "end of February" choices for AL and NL MVP?
Mark P
8:44
Not the most exciting picks in the world, but I'll go with Bobby Witt and Shohei Ohtani

8:45
Why would I waive my NTC to go to Houston now when I said no in the past?
Mark P
8:46
Arenado apparently was open to joining the Astros but wanted more time to consider the situation in the aftermath of the Tucker trade.  Houston was only willing to wait so long, then pivoted to sign Christian Walker and the rest is history.

As a Phillies fan, I’m growing increasingly worried that the current group can’t get over the hump before Father Time catches up to Harper. If they fall short again this season, should they let Realmuto and Schwarber walk and invest that money in Vlad Jr.? I love them both. They’ll never buy a beer in Philly again. But unless they’re both willing to sign for league minimum, what’s the point in running it back yet again?
Mark P
8:48
The issue isn't Schwarber or JTR, but rather that some of the other guys making big money (Turner, Castellanos, Walker) have been underwhelming.  That isn't a great answer considering that those three are all still on the books for at least a couple of more years, but the Phillies are still a good team.  They just haven't had things break their way in the playoffs.
8:49
Not a hot take to say "it would help Team X to have its prospects break out," but the Phillies in particular would get such a boost if Crawford or Miller were productive big leaguers from the jump

Now that the primary purchaser has jumped from the Twins to the White Sox are the MLBTR staff putting together a bid?  You might get a deal.
Mark P
8:50
Minnesota's own Steve Adams would be the man to ask about this.  Curiously, Steve sent a staff e-mail the other day advertising Girl Scout cookies on behalf of his kids, but the prices were $50 million per box
Devers
8:51
Why are people making such a big deal of me saying i wont dh? None of my teammates seem to have a problem with me at 3b or see me as toxic..why is the media making this a thing?
Mark P
8:52
There's a disconnect of putting Bregman at 2B and Devers at 3B when Bregman is very clearly the better defensive third baseman.

But all that said, Devers is a proud man who clearly wants to keep playing 3B, and surely feels he can improve his defense.  If staying at third was actually promised to him as part of his extension, that's another kettle of fish that makes the Red Sox look kind of bad.

Are early injuries to Bello and Crawford a hint of things to come for the Red Sox pitching staff? I’m scared Crochet will need TJ before season ends…
Mark P
8:53
All together now......you can never have enough pitching!
For now, it doesn't look like Boston's issues are too dire, plus they have a good number of depth arms
Beards

Thoughts on the Yankees lifting the beard policy?

Seemed like kind of an antiquated rule.  It did lead to a fun afternoon of many people posting the Don Mattingly clips from the Simpsons.

Hello. Will my Guards get a bat thru free agency or trade before the season? Thanks for your time.
Mark P

Time is running short, so probably nothing substantial beyond a minor league signings

Would you use Orelvis Martinez as the jays DH this season if he keeps hitting this spring?
Mark P
8:58
The cynic in me feels like he'll get plenty of at-bats anyway later in the season once the Blue Jays start trading veterans.  But if he crushes the ball in ST, I'd be open to see what Martinez can do in the Show

Although I don't like the word "complacent," the Mets seem a bit too happy about the SPs they have in camp. Can they catch lightning a second year in a row (I'm thinking Clay Holmes) or will they be looking for a starter by midseason?
Mark P
9:00
I'd argue they should be looking for a starter right now, given Montas' injury.  Or even before Montas got hurt.  The Mets are putting a lot of faith in a rotation that has several question marks.
