Live from my living room, it's Sunday night!  Let's open up the chat queue and get some questions....

Haven't heard anything about Ryan Yarbrough. Thought he was solid down the stretch.
Mark P
8:10
Strikeout-light pitchers like Yarbrough tend to fall through the cracks to some extent during the offseason, so it's probably only now that teams are looking to him as a Plan B or Plan C option.  He could sign at basically any time now, and let's perhaps hope it isn't during this chat :)

Does Vladdy sign tomorrow?
Mark P

Will Vlad Guerrero and the Jays reach an extension before Tuesday's "deadline"?

Yes (9.4% | 157 votes)

No (79.5% | 1,322 votes)

No, but they'll reach one relatively soon afterwards (11% | 183 votes)

Recent reports suggest the Padres will hang onto Cease and King and will instead look to move Robert Suarez (who can be replaced internally. The Padres still have a hole at 1B/DH. Who do they get to fill it?
Mark P
8:14
Sheets or Brosseau or a younger guy like Ornelas stepping up would be great for San Diego, but if Suarez is moved, I suspect an OF/DH type would be brought in as part of the trade.  Or, they bring in a second baseman and Cronenworth/Arraez more fully take over 1B/DH duties
Tigers
8:14
Could yoan Moncada be an option at 3rd base for the tigers come trade deadline?
Mark P
8:15
I guess?  That would mean Moncada has a big bounce-back season, and none of Detroit's in-house guys do much.  Frankly, I think I'd prefer to take my chance with Vierling, Jung and company.
Cardinal Madness
8:15
Cardinals for the worst offseason of any team?
Mark P
8:16
"Worst" covers a lot of ground, but they're certainly up there for most unusual.  Even if an Arenado trade doesn't look to be happening, you'd think they would've tried to move out at least one more veteran contract (among the guys who don't have no-trade clauses).
8:18
I guess it's worth noting that St. Louis won 83 games last year, so it's not like they were a bad team or anything.  But I'm not sure if running it back with the same lineup (minus Goldschmidt, Kittredge, Gibson, etc.) is at all a recipe for success

Can you provide clarity on John Means injury/return date? I've seen TJ/out for year and brace/summer return.
Mark P
8:21
Means had a full TJ surgery in early June 2024.  That, uh, means he's facing the usual 13-15 month recovery period.  If he wants to come back as a reliever, that could be a 13-month stint since he wouldn't need to build up his arm quite so much.  On the other hand, I'm assuming Means wants to continue as a starting pitcher, so returning as a reliever might not do much for helping his value for 2026.

The other factor, obviously, is that this is Means' second TJ surgery in a little over two years' time.  That very well might mean his recovery is on the longer end just for precautionary reasons, but it all depends how his arm is holding up.  June surgery dates are tricky, since the timing makes it basically 50-50 on whether or not a pitcher will be able to come back the next season or miss the whole thing.

Could the Tigers use Starling Marte
Mark P
8:22
In the broad sense that they could use another RH bat, sure.  But, more specifically, probably not, since he'd just be in the same part-time role he's set to assume with the Mets.
8:23
Plus, Detroit probably isn't keen on taking on much of Marte's salary, even if the Mets ate a big chunk of that $19.5MM

Arenado to the Cubs?
Mark P
8:24
As bad as the Cardinals want Arenado's deal off the books, I find it hard to believe they'd move him to the Cubs

8:24
Will RedSox make another move for a  Pitcher ?
Mark P
8:25
I can see the logic in going after a top-tier guy like Cease, but I'm not sure a) San Diego is going to move him, b) the Sox would meet the Padres' asking price
Henry Dodger
8:26
How would you guess the Red Sox infield and DH alignment shakes out after the Bregman signing? Campbell seems close to ready, and I'm not sure that Story is really a starter anymore.
Mark P
8:27
Story's health is the big X-factor, but I wonder if the Sox are quietly lobbying Devers to change positions.  Having Bregman just stay at 3B makes a lot more logical sense than testing him at 2B, even if I don't have any doubts he can handle the move
Big Red Machine
8:28
Have the Reds done enough to slip into at least a wildcard spot?
Mark P
8:29
I don't see it.  Can't count out some of that young talent emerging or Francona working his magic, but right now, I just see too many better teams in the NL.  In the NL Central alone I'd put the Reds behind Chicago and Milwaukee, and then you've got the Diamondbacks/Padres/two NL East teams also fighting for wild cards

SNL50 or NBA All Star game?
Mark P
8:31
I'm taping SNL 50 to watch after my shift.  I can't remember the last time i watched the NBA All-Star Game.

Once a deal is “reported” to be signed how long does the player have to report to spring trraining/sign the deal?  I hear Pivetta has an agreement with the Padres but has he reported yet?
Mark P
8:31
Depends when the player takes his physical, and sometimes there are some natural delays because a player is on vacation, dealing with family issues, etc.

Does Judge reach 350 alltime this season?
Mark P
8:32
Judge already has 315, so if he hits "only" 35 homers, that'll count as a down year.  He'll sail past 350 as long as he's healthy.
Friars for sale

Are the Padres really good with their current salary? At one point it seemed like they would have to drastically cut down.
Mark P
8:35
Cease and Arraez will both likely be off the books after the season, plus King, plus perhaps both Pivetta/Suarez if they opt out (or if Suarez isn't traded).  So while the Padres have a ton of money locked up in longer-term deals, they can reduce things pretty substantially by next year
Of course, that just leaves them with more holes to fill, but that's why AJ Preller earns his money

In light of the Spencer Horowitz injury, who plays First for the Bucs?

8:37
Will the Pirates get another outfielder?
Mark P
8:37
Probably Endy or Triolo, or maybe Cook or Darick Hall. Reynolds could see some action, which ties into the possibility that Pittsburgh could get another outfielder.
8:38
I'd argue the Pirates could use another OF anyway since I don't love their bench depth

I know Boston paid a cy young pitcher to get Vaughn Grissom, but do you think Grissom might be the carrot in a Yoshida deal?
Mark P
8:39
After Grissom's rough 2024, that's not much of a carrot.
