Can we get through another edition of the Weekend Chat without being interrupted by a major transaction?  Let's find out!
Electric boogy

Padres sign Flaherty?
Mark P
6:08
Since Flaherty is open to shorter-term deals (presumably with an opt-out), I could see him being SD's pivot after they move Cease, or in less likely fashion King.

That said, such a pivot is tricky since you'd figure some of the teams after Cease are also in contact with Flaherty's camp.

6:09
Do you see the Braves making a move for a starter before the season starts?
Mark P
6:11
My guess is yes. AA set the bar for a new starter as someone who'd be clearly better than Holmes or Anderson, who the Braves have a lot of faith in.  Despite that faith, I do feel Atlanta will land one more veteran on a short-term deal just to continue to add as much rotation depth as possible.

6:11
Do the Twins make some kind of trade soon?
Mark P
6:12
They've got to do something, since free agency doesn't appear to be much an option given their limited budget.
Pivetta
6:14
Getting less than 3/75 Eovaldi got b/c of the comp pick and perhaps few suitors specifically for him?
Mark P
6:15
Pivetta's market was tough to gauge at the start of the offseason, and it has arguably gotten even trickier now that we're into February.  Keep in mind that the top 50 projections only had him taking the qualifying offer, and it certainly seems that if anything close to 3/$75MM had been on the table, he would've taken it.

6:17
What would Giants need to offer in order to get Cease?
Mark P
6:17
I don't see the Padres moving him within the division unless the Giants really overpaid in a trade offer. Doesn't seem like a fit.

6:18
Any chance Brasier doesnt get traded or claimed?
Mark P
6:19
You'd got to think the Dodgers are getting a lot of calls on Brasier, so a move certainly seems imminent.  It's wild that the Dodgers have so much pitching depth and talent that even a solid reliever like Brasier is expendable.

For Frasier memes alone, I'm kind of hoping he ends up with the Mariners
Jose Altuve
6:20
Would you rather Altuve or Alvarez play LF? Both are DH’s imo
Mark P
6:20
Altuve, since playing too much in the outfield might put too much strain on Alvarez's bad knees
Champdo
6:21
Do the Tigers just stick with Jung at 3rd if Bregman signs elsewhere
Mark P
6:21
Vierling will get a good chunk of the 3B time as well, but yeah, it'll be internal answers if Bregman doesn't land in Motown
Stew
6:22
Whats the MLB equivilant of the Luca/AD trade?
Mark P
6:23
Heh, the Athletic just posted a piece a few minutes ago suggesting possible comps.  Entries include Trout-for-Witt or deGrom-for-Skenes
Ben Cherrington
6:24
Is this really the roster with which I'm going to Bradenton ?
Mark P
6:25
The Adam Frazier add was about as uninspiring as it gets, but it seems like once again, the Pirates aren't willing to spend much money.  Why they haven't been more aggressive on the trade front is an open question.

Which team will be last year’s Kansas City Royals (aka a worst-to-first)?

I am signing Yoan Moncada aren't I?
Mark P
6:28
Seems unlikely.  Yesterday's report from the Post indicated that the Yankees checked in on Moncada's medicals but that seemed to be the extent of their interest.
Mike
6:29
Is the draft pick penalty attached to Pivetta the main reason he is unsigned?
Mark P
6:30
Without the QO, it's possible Pivetta might still be available given the vagaries of the starting pitching market.  But yeah, I think it's fair to call it the main reason.
Orioles - Dodgers
6:31
Could you see the Os Trade the Dodgers for one of the many starting pitchers? If so who?
Mark P
6:33
I don't think LA plans to move any their starters until maybe around the deadline, a la Paxton last year.  The Dodgers have so much injury uncertainty in their rotation that they want to give everything a few months to settle and evaluate before even considering trading from that "depth."  Keep in mind, LA is obviously planning for a seven-month season and want to have as much pitching as possible to eat all those innings

Will the Cardinals do anything?
Mark P
6:34
Until Arenado is traded, it feels like the Cardinals are basically in limbo
More May Trades?
6:35
With the trade market shifting a bit as of late (more Major leaguer for major leaguer trades and less prospect package only trades) could we see more early trades this year like the Arraez trade last season?
Mark P
6:36
It's possible.  That Arraez deal was maybe something of a perfect storm considering the Marlins were absolutely in tank mode, and it might take another team struggling badly in April and quickly deciding to throw in the towel.

6:37
Can the Twins still shed Vazquez's contract with Elias Diaz off the market?
Mark P
6:38
It'll be difficult.  If a deal can't be found, Minnesota probably just keeps him for the catching depth, rather than eat most of his contract just for the sake of making a trade

When are the Dodgers going to spend some money?
Mark P
6:39
I half-expected them to acquire Luka Doncic
Dipoto
6:40
Castillo for Casas and Story.  Wouldn't that make sense for both teams?
Mark P
6:40
The Mariners would be getting no salary relief in the trade, plus taking a big risk that Story can stay healthy.  No dice from Seattle's perspective on that one.
Worst to 1st?
6:41
Since when were the Jays the "worst?"
