It's the Sunday brunch edition of the Weekend Chat!  Let's see what's cooking on the question front...
John Henry’s Conscience

Casas and Yoshida for Arenado and Helsley (plus some cash changing hands) — does this deal make sense for the Sox/Cards?
Mark P
11:21
The Cardinals' primary goal in trading Arenado is moving most/all of his salary.  Taking on Yoshida's underwater contract doesn't do anything to help that goal.

Percent chance the Cubs extend Tucker prior to free agrncy
Mark P
11:22
Pretty close to zero.  If you're Tucker, you'd need the Cubs to overpay in order to keep you from testing the market next winter, and the Cubs haven't been nearly that financially aggressive in a long time.

11:24
Any chances of the Nats swooping in late on Flaherty?
Mark P
11:25
It would represent a bigger splash than Washington is seemingly willing to make.  Flaherty may be open to shorter-term deals with contenders, but probably not with more of a borderline contender like the Nationals.  If the Nats wanted to land Flaherty, they'd likely have to offer the kind of longer-term contract he was looking to land at the start of the winter (and is still surely hoping to land now)

11:26
would a Bo Bichette to Pirates for prospects make sense? what prospects would that take?
Mark P
11:27
Such a trade doesn't really make sense for the Pirates or Jays, nor does it fit how either of those front offices operate

Can Sasaki sign with a surprise team not name dodgers or West cost team?
Mark P
11:29
The fact that he met with (at least) the Yankees, Mets, Rangers, and Cubs indicates that he isn't basing his decision solely on geography.  While I do suspect Sasaki ultimately winds up in LA or San Diego, it shouldn't be considered a shock if he signs elsewhere

There’s a lot of mixed reviews from the Giants signing JV but I think that it’s a great move just for the fact of him being a team leader and also as a mentor for our younger pitch. I wouldn’t mind for them to sign either Santander or Alonso because it would definitely add more punch to out line up. Which one do you see as the like choice
Mark P
11:31
Santander is the better choice of the two for San Francisco, because Eldridge is coming up soon to take over first base.

And I agree that the Verlander signing is a pretty solid move for the Giants.  No such thing as a bad one-year contract, and if Verlander is healthy, there's a ton of upside
Mike
11:32
Are you surprised the A's haven't added a bad contract for a prospect sweetener? It seems like a wasted opportunity. Trading for somebody like Starling Marte, Taijuan Walker, Marcus Stroman, and/or Chris Taylor to get a decent prospect seems like a worthwhile endeavor.
Mark P
11:33
Given that it's only January 12, such a deal could certainly still happen between now and Opening Day.  In fact, such pure salary-dump types of trades might be likelier to happen deeper into Spring Training, once the Athletics explore other options to boost their payroll and/or if they other team perhaps agrees to the A's prospect ask

11:35
If the Tigers sign Flaherty for their #2 and Bregman for 3rd base do you think that would make them as competitive as any team in the AL?
Mark P
11:35
It wouldn't put Detroit immediately in the drivers' seat for the pennant, but obviously adding both players would help the team a lot, and at least make them favorites in the AL Central.
John
11:37
Regarding Santander. If he signs a short term deal for under 50 million (say 2 years/44 million opt out after 1) what compensation would the Orioles get?
Mark P
11:38
The Orioles' compensation pick would then come just before the start of the third round.  If Santander signed for more than $50MM, Baltimore's pick comes just after the first round.
11:39
So a pretty sizable gap there that obviously the O's are hoping they don't have to sweat out, but I do think Santander ultimately gets more than $50MM even in a shorter-term pact

What teams could/would take on Benintendis paid down contract if Luis Robert is dealt? And what sort of return could the Chi Sox expect?
Mark P
11:41
Robert is such an important trade chip that Chicago's goal is obtaining as much young talent as possible.  Attaching Benintendi to Robert just to save some money would be a completely backwards decision, and the front office won't be doing that
Barry Bonds
11:42
does the vetrans comity vote me in the hall?
Mark P
11:43
Bonds received less than four of a possible 16 votes the last time he was on a veterans committee ballot, so if Bonds does eventually get elected, it won't be any time soon.

11:43
Do you think the Orioles should trade for Jordan Montgomery or do they sign Spencer Turnball to add depth to their rotation?
Mark P
11:45
I'm not sure either move would entirely help Baltimore's staff.  I like Turnbull and I think Monty is going to bounce back in 2025, but unless that bounce-back delivers 2023-level playoff ace Montgomery, the Orioles already have a lot of starters in the Turnbull/Montgomery vein
Braves101
11:45
Max Scherzer signing coming soon? If so to whom?
Mark P
11:46
My assumption has been that Scherzer and Verlander have pretty similar markets, so with JV now signed, it wouldn't be a shock if Scherzer also lands somewhere relatively soon.
11:47
The most recent reports had four unnamed teams in on him, so we'll see
Go Guardians!!!!!!
11:49
Any chance Cleveland signs Austin Hays or Randall Grichuck?
Mark P
11:50
Neither should be out of even the Guardians' limited price range, and Grichuk in particular fits great as a platoon lefty-masher to help balance out Cleveland LHH-heavy lineup
Carnegie and Ontario
11:50
Any chance Sasaki to Cleveland?  Guards are known to develop pitching....
Mark P
11:51
It would be a lot of fun if Roki picked a random team that wasn't remotely seen as on his radar.

Two Mets things. First, I know Alonso is likely to come back, but the waiting is terrible. They can’t really roll out someone at unproven 3rd, right?Second, Steven’s is good at assembling bullpens, but it’d be nice to have a sure thing like Scott.
Mark P
11:53
Right now the projected 3B is Vientos, who is no longer "unproven" after his big 2024 season.  So if Alonso did re-sign, the Mets' lineup is looking in a great shape.  And if Alonso doesn't return, Vientos is still there for either corner infield slot, and perhaps he'd then move over to first base if the Mets got more involved on Bregman or Arenado

Nationals fans seem to be upset about the lack of spending but what if the org doesn't like any of the "big, long-term investment" FAs out there as a fit? Spending just to spend is dumb especially if a team doesn't value also losing a draft pick.
Mark P
11:56
If the Nationals wanted to save their money to make a bigger strike next offseason, that's a justifiable stance since the roster might be at least a year away anyway.
Orioles
11:57
What do you make of what happened with Jeff Hoffman?
Henry Dodger
11:57
I understand the O's flagged Jeff Hoffman's medicals, but I really like this relatively low-cost gamble for the Blue Jays. Do you like the signing?
Mark P
11:59
I like the deal, since for as much attention as Toronto's lack of offense rightfully gets, it can't be overstated how bad the bullpen was in 2024.

Bringing Garcia, Sandlin, and now Hoffman into the mix helps the Jays' relief corps enormously, and I'd argue that one or two more arms are still needed
