We already ran the Weekend Chat yesterday, but here's a special edition.  Since I missed a few chats during busy weekends in September and October, it's only right to provide this bonus to...

"Mark, is this because things are very slow on the news front during Thanksgiving weekend?"

.....uh....no.....?

Who got what compensation picks?
Mark P
7:08
Here is the full list of what each team with a qualifying offer-rejecting free agent would get back, if that player signed elsewhere....

Former champ

Sandy Alcantara to Texas for Sebastian Walcott ?
Mark P
7:10
Miami has said that Alcantara isn't being dealt this winter, which is a wise move since they'd be selling low coming off his Tommy John surgery.  If Alcatara pitched well at the start of 2025 and looks like his old self, the Marlins can easily ask for a lot more than just Walcott from teams at the deadline
Lefty

Yaz, Doval, Taylor Rogers from SF to Bos for Abreu and Yoshida. Who says no?
Mark P
7:11
Don't see what's in it for the Giants with that trade. Yoshida has as much limited value for them as he does with Boston

Any chance I’m moving back to the infield now that 1B and 3B appear to be open in STL?
Mark P
7:13
1B won't be open since Willson Contreras is moving there, and I wouldn't say an Arenado trade is a sure thing whatsoever.

Whoops I meant competitive balance picks. I thought they were announced today.
Mark P
7:14
Nope, though the announcement should be coming in a few days' time.

Do you think Teo ultimately goes back to the dodgers this offseason?
Mark P
7:16
I'm about 50-50 on this.  Obviously the Dodgers liked what he brought to the table in 2024, and Hernandez is so overtly wanting to stay in L.A. that he might take a slight discount (or, more deferred money).

On the other hand, the Dodgers can recoup a draft pick if he leaves in free agency.  And for teams who miss out on Soto, Hernandez is a logical backup plan, which could drive up the bidding on his market beyond LA's price range.  The Dodgers could pivot to another outfield option instead, or maybe give Rushing a look in left field

Is Holliday a trade target?  What would the Bucs need to give?  Jones + Ashcraft?
Mark P
7:18
I'm sure the O's would ask for Skenes, but Jones/Ashcraft is a reasonable realistic ask.

But it's a moot point since I highly doubt Baltimore is giving up on Holliday this soon.

How about Detroit goes out and signs Verlander AND Scherzer?
Mark P
7:19
Both seems like overkill.  One seems possible, and it would be a fun story in either case

Do you think the importance of closers is overrated? I mean  quite a few save opportunities come with three run leads, facing the bottom of the order or both.
Mark P
7:23
It is critically important to have a key reliever (or relievers) who can erase threats late in games.  Whether or not that threat is in the ninth inning specifically or perhaps in the 7th or 8th when the opposing team has its three best hitters due up, having a closer or fireman is crucial.

Nothing is more demoralizing to a good team than a leaky bullpen, as a blown lead instantly erases anything good achieved over the first eight innings.  We shouldn't ignore this psychological aspect of the game, and the extra confidence an entire team gets by having peace of mind with its closer

Where does the Mariners get a second base and a third base from?
Mark P

Pretty much any sporting goods store

Best guess. Who starts at 2nd and 3rd or the Ms on opening day?  Is it possible it could be you and me?
Mark P
7:27
I made my triumphant return to the softball field this past summer, and my bar for "triumphant" is that we won the game and I didn't get injured.  So I'm not exactly MLB ready.

Can't help but default to someone on the Rays, just because Dipoto has such a rich history of dealing with Tampa.  Caminero obviously isn't going anywhere unless the M's gave up one of their top starters, and the Rays are perhaps one of the only teams deep enough in pitching that they wouldn't necessarily need one of the Seattle arms.  I can't entirely rule out a Brandon Lowe trade just because that's how the Rays operate, or Yandy Diaz might be a possibility if the M's are willing to take the defensive hit at 3B

I hear nothing, absolutely nothing with regards to the Tigers plans. I know the meetings are this week but really?
Mark P
7:28
The Tigers might just be better than most at keeping things close to the vest.  They're surely keeping an eye on several markets.

Where does soto go?  Where do the Yankees pivot if not the Yankees?  Do you think they are better off with him leaving
Mark P
7:30
I think they're better off having him because it's Juan Freaking Soto.  As we saw this very season, having Soto and Judge in a lineup helps paper over a lot of flaws.

If he does sign elsewhere, a Bellinger trade would help, or the Yankees might make more of a push for Walker or Alonso to make a splash at first base.
Elias
7:30
Why is it taking me so long to just sign a backup catcher to replace McCann? It's not like Soto is holding that market up.
Mark P
7:31
It's only December 1, still lots of time in the offseason for Baltimore to address a fairly lower-priority position

7:31
Why are so many people convinced that the Pirates are going to trade Jared Jones?
Mark P
7:32
Apart from that one question earlier, I haven't heard such buzz.  Jones is probably one of the last players Pittsburgh would look to trade, as they have enough young pitching depth that one of those arms is far likelier to be moved than a guy who looks like he might be a #2 starter

With a 2024 perspective re-arrange the 1993 Game 1 WS line up 1.Henderson 2.White 3.Alomar 4.Carter 5.Olerud 6.Molitor 7.Fernandez 8. Sprague 9.Borders
Mark P
7:35
I'd go Ricky, Molitor, Alomar, Olerud, Carter, White, Fernandez, Sprague, Borders.  Not many ways you can really go wrong with those players anyway, and the Jays' method obviously worked

Ah, the 1993 Series, what great memories!

7:37
Do the Giants sign Ha Seong Kim or Adames or so they sign both?
Mark P
7:37
Signing both seems to squeeze out Fitzgerald ultimately, though he'd naturally get playing time while Kim gets fully healthy.  More probable that SF signs just one of the two free agent infielders.
Bobby Cox
7:39
Braves need a LF and lefty. Joc? Comforto? Evaoldi?
Mark P
7:40
Conforto is the better fit than Pederson, since Conforto can still play a passable left field.  With Ozuna at DH, there's no real spot for Joc to return to Atlanta.

The Braves have been linked to Eovaldi but the team arguably doesn't "need" another left-handed starter specifically.

If the Mets miss out on Soto, do they try and dip below the tax line to reset the tax for following years?
Mark P
7:42
This seems quite plausible, since the Mets' tax number is a little under $173.5MM (hat tip to RosterResource) at the moment.  This year's threshold is $241MM, so the Mets would have a lot of room to still splurge on a top starting pitcher or two and remain under the tax line.

Do you really expect Toronto to move Vladdy off 1dt base?
