The Weekend Chat is open!  Let's grab some questions before the NLCS officially gets underway....

Corbin Burnes contract over or under Yamamoto’s $325M record?
Mark P
6:50
Well under.  Beyond the various circumstances attached to Yamamoto coming over from NPB, Burnes turns 30 later this month, and Yamamoto was 25 at the time of his signing.

What do you think the Braves do with Murphy? Baldwin is looking very close to ready.
Mark P
6:52
Murphy is signed for four more seasons, and his trade value has taken a hit after his shaky season.  In short, the Braves aren't going to do anything with Murphy in the near future.
It seems like Murphy just simply never got on track after his oblique injury, so the first thought is that with better health next year, he'll be his old self

Who are the Nats targets in FA? Think they go for it in ‘25
Mark P
6:56
I suspect they'll definitely take a shot at Soto, due to their past history.  But if they don't sign him, I can see the Nats still making some adds but not any headline "go for it" big splashes.

Moreso than free agency, I could see the Nationals pursuing the trade route for new players.  They've got a lot of open payroll space and could take on some unfavorable contracts from teams looking to trim payroll.  Given how many other teams are facing broadcast revenue issues, the Nats and other teams with more stable TV situations could capitalize.
There is some irony in considering the Nats' broadcast situation as "stable" given their long-running legal battle with the Orioles, but at least the Nats know where games will be airing in 2025

How much do the jays need to add to be able to contend?
Mark P
6:59
Since I'm planning to write the Jays offseason outlook piece this week, here's a sneak preview....the Jays reasonably know what they'll getting from two positions (first base, center field) next season.  The rest of the diamond is basically a question mark, since the Jays don't know if Bichette will rebound, Springer can turn around the decline, Kirk can get back to his 2022 form, or if any of the young infielders can become everyday guys.
In short, they'll need a lot, not to mention a ton of work to be done on the bullpen

Teoscar Hernandez a realistic FA signing for the Reds?
Mark P
7:00
I suspect his price tag will be a little too high for the Reds' liking.  He'd be a great fit in Cincy, just as he would in lots of other lineups.

oh the pain of losing to the dodgers!
Mark P
7:02
It was a shocking end to the series, since the Padres looked to have it basically in the bag after Game 3.  Brutal ending aside, Padres fans still have to be pretty happy overall how this season went
Willy Adames
7:03
Do I reunite with Craig Counsell?
Mark P
7:04
Swanson is a great defensive shortstop, and Adames' defensive numbers really cratered this year.  I doubt Adames will sign somewhere where he isn't a shortstop and it doesn't make much sense for Swanson to move positions, so Chicago doesn't seem too likely as Adames' next landing spot.

What are the chances Phillies trade Bohm and/or Marsh in the off-season?
Gene Gene
7:05
In Philly, talking heads are suggesting the team consider bolstering the roster by trading Castellanos who has "a lot of value." Do you think he has a lot of value with that contract?
Mark P
7:07
"A lot of value" is a bit of a reach, as Castellanos is a poor defender and has been okay (107 wRC+) but nothing special at the plate over the last two seasons.  Philly would have to eat money to make such a trade happen, though an interesting wrinkle might involve moving Castellanos with one or even both of Bohm or Marsh.  Or, potentially a prospect to sweeten the pot in perhaps a more realistic way.
Broadly speaking, I do think the Phillies will be pretty aggressive this winter after another playoff setback.

Randal Grichuk is seeming like an ideal fit for the O's in my mind. Could you give an estimate on his eventual contract? More capable than most weak-side platoons for sure. Something a little shy of 2/$20MM?
Mark P
7:09
I knew Grichuk was having a good season but didn't quite realize how good until I checked his numbers the other day while writing the Diamondbacks outlook piece.  Agreed that he'd be a nice fit in Baltimore, and a guaranteed second year might be a bit much for a platoon bat.  Maybe one year and then a vesting option for 2026?
Carlos Correa

Am I available in a trade?
Mark P
7:11
Full no-trade clause, but I'd imagine the Twins would be open to hearing offers.

Dose Bill DeWitt not realize that the younger fans have not seen a Cardinals team really compete for a World Series in their lifetime so far. Now, not trying to win, want this hurt getting a young fan base going forward?
Mark P
7:12
They won the WS in 2006 and 2011, and were in the Series in 2013.  So apart from the very young fans, it's not that distant a memory
7:14
And I'm probably showing my age as I write that, lol, since I just realized that, say, an 18-year-old Cardinals fan probably has pretty vague memories of 2013
Braves
7:14
Are you surprised by the firing of the hitting coaches in Atlanta?
Mark P
7:15
On paper yes, given that it seemed like the Braves' lack of offense was mostly due to the injuries.  But, if the team thought new voices were needed, that also might help freshen things up.
Dana Brown
7:15
My internal 1B options are underwhelming, should I go hard at Christian Walker or could I try to get Andrew Vaughn or Spencer Torkelson in trade?
Mark P
7:16
Walker would be a help on a lot of teams, perhaps Houston most of all.
If Bregman departs, signing Walker would be a great way for the Astros to help reload the infield

How does payroll work when a player is on IL? If it's just 10/15 days, does the team pay full salary? Do they have ins if longer(60 days/ out 4 season)? Full pay?  Thanks.
Mark P
7:18
Players are paid in full when they're on the IL
Whoops, hit the post button too quickly there
7:19
And insurance premiums presumably kick in for longer amounts of time like a full season.  Probably not as short as 60 days, but perhaps a half-season?
John O
7:19
Will the Red Sox really make a move to get Willy Adames and will they seriously consider front of the line pitching
Mark P
7:20
Pitching is the likelier target, as Adames probably isn't a fit with Mayer on the way.
