Time to open up the chat window and talk some baseball.  We'll get rolling in a few minutes once some questions pile in.

How is Jackson Holliday fairing in AAA? When do you think he gets the call again?
Mark P
7:28
Not great, albeit after only about a week of action.  Assuming Holliday starts hitting better, I wouldn't be surprised to see him back in Baltimore in maybe a month's time?
Obviously depends on a lot of other factors too, like injuries, or if other prospects force the issue and get in line for a call-up

Did SD really want Arraez, or was MIA making him available and SD said, "Sure, why not?"  Also, isn't SD kind of crowded with the new additions of Arraez and Donovan Solano?
Mark P
7:30
The Padres were reportedly talking about Arraez during the offseason as well, so it's not like this trade just emerged out of the blue.  Solano is a veteran player and a better defensive option than Arraez, and SD shouldn't have too much trouble finding playing time for everyone.  Solano is also the kind of player who is cool with a pretty limited role, so unless he starts forcing the issue with his bat or something, he should remain a depth guy

what do you think about Padres recent trade?
Mark P
7:31
A pretty good deal from San Diego's perspective, since they moved more quantity over true quality prospect-wise, and Miami is covering basically all of Arraez's salary for 2024

Where can Snakes improve the most?
Mark P
7:34
Bullpen is the clear answer, and theoretically that problem can be helped when Sewald is back in a couple of days.  When E-Rod and Kelly return and the pitching depth improves overall, that's also a plus.

The D'Backs are already leveraged enough that they aren't going to make any panic moves, even if it'll be tough waiting for guys to get healthy.  And, naturally, Corbin Carroll getting on track at the plate is the other big question with the lineup right now.

Manzardo gonna play everyday?
Mark P
7:35
Maybe not against left-handed pitchers too often, but the Guards will give him plenty of playing time.

Is Ohtani the best hitter in Baseball on top of everything else he does?
Mark P
7:37
Amidst everything else about Ohtani, the fact that he's hitting like this eight months after major arm surgery is pretty wild.  Nothing Ohtani does can surprise me any more....what a star.

The fire sale starts now in Miami?

Do you think the Marlins are done with early season trades or are other players on the block?
Mark P
7:38
Bendix is open to moving anyone at any time, so stay tuned.
(Though if he could hold off on any trades until this chat is over, that would be great.)

I still think Jarred Kelenic is not very good at hitting a baseball, even when he's serving solely as the long side of the platoon. Are you more hopeful than I am?
Mark P
7:40
Still way too much swing-and-miss in his game, and his hard contact isn't translating into much offense.  Kelenic is below-average at the plate this year but not truly disastrous or anything, so the Braves have time to let him hopefully figure it out.

How much longer will John Schnider have a job in Toronto? Or does Ross Atkins get fired first?
Great white north
7:41
In Toronto, do you see John Schneider or Ross Atkins being fired first?
Mark P
7:42
The manager is almost always fired before the GM, so Schneider will likely be the fall guy if the Jays do decide a change is necessary.

Or, maybe the first step is to be overhauling the hitting coaches.  I'm still surprised they didn't bring in new hitting coaches after last year.

I think the Royals are for real, but I think they have to find more offense in order to sustain the success. Who are some realistic targets for them. I want Taylor Ward for starters
Mark P

Steve Adams addressed the struggling KC outfield in a Front Office piece this week, which was available to all MLBTR readers...

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/05/the-royals-outfield-drought.htm...
So, the outfield looks like a logical place to start, and Ward would be a nice fit since the Angels are surely going to be in sell mode soon.

7:46
The Pirates should have a pretty good rotation soon with Skeens joining Jones and Keller. But hitting especially at 1st base needs addressed. Who would be a good internal or external player to play 1st for the Pirates?
Mark P
7:48
Brandon Belt is out there, but after his long layoff, who knows if Belt would be able to ramp up after an extended Spring Training run.

On the trade front, could Gavin Sheets be an interesting candidate?  He's hitting well, Chicago should be open to selling, and even though he's controllable, the price tag might not be "too" high given Sheets' inconsistency for much of his career?
7:49
Turning to the Angels again, maybe Brandon Drury if he gets things on track at the plate.

I won't lie, my default "who's available" answers will inevitably be a lot of players on the Angels, White Sox, Marlins, and Rockies for now.

Will Smith locked up long term, the farm stocked with multiple top catching prospects, do you think LA deals one of Diego Cartaya, Dalton Rushing or Thayron Liranzo this summer?
Mark P
7:52
Seems very likely.  The Dodgers will surely be deadline buyers to some extent, and they've got plenty of depth to offer at a generally thin position

The A’s are a game below .500. Can they keep this up? Is there hope that they can continue this momentum and be a contender sooner than later?
Oakland
7:55
Headed to the playoffs?  If so, do the fans show up?  If they do, then what?
Mark P
7:56
While I don't think the A's will keep it up, it would be a truly unique Cinderella story if they played competitive ball the remainder of the season.
John
7:57
Do you see any extensions for the Orioles under new ownership? If so, who?
Mark P
7:58
The O's have so many extension candidates, really.  Locking up even one this season would be a nice signal to the fans that the new ownership group is ready to spend to keep this core in place.
Luke
7:58
Do you think Bud Black will get fired?
Mark P
7:59
It might be more likely that Black retires, or steps away from the job or something.

Can we get the bees beads nonsense out of the way along with what music you're listening too?
Mark P

If there was ever a week for Bees/Beads, it's the week when that beekeeper saved that Diamondbacks game
