Welcome to the Weekend Chat!  Let's see how many times I write "it's still early...." or "small sample size," or "it's only been X innings or X plate appearances..."

When do the Astros call up Loperfido?
Mark P
8:14
I can understand if Houston doesn't want to sit Abreu down just yet, but Singleton is also not exactly tearing it up in a part-time role.  Loperfido seems to have merited some kind of a big league look after his hot start in Triple-A

Who gets sent down when Romano and Swanson are activated? Bowden Francis and Nate Pearson? Is Mitch White released?
Mark P
8:16
As thin as the Jays are in SP depth, White simply hasn't been productive as a starter, reliever, or swingman.  He's a pretty easy cut in my view once Romano/Swanson are back, and the Jays might even be able to outright him if nobody puts in a DFA claim.
Francis probably stays as a long reliever or depth option, and maybe Pearson is the odd man out just due to minor league options

Could Nolan be on the move to the LA if the Cardinals are out of it in July?
Mark P
8:18
With the Dodgers then moving Muncy to second base?  I guess that's plausible, and I wouldn't rule out the Dodgers from ever making a big move.  But, given Arenado's slow start this year and his middling numbers last year, he might not be the most ideal trade candidate

McCutchen a HOF?
Mark P
8:20
He's a charter member of the Hall of Very Good in my books.  Not quite enough truly elite seasons to get into Cooperstown, but obviously still an excellent player.

What kind of prospect package should Miami expect for Luzardo?
Mark P
8:23
Here's another player whose rough start is impacting his trade value, even though obviously Luzardo and Arenado are apples and oranges in many other aspects.

Assuming Luzardo gets back into form, I still wouldn't expect Miami to trade him since he's controlled through 2026.  Even if the Marlins do start to tear things down (or at least remodel the roster rather than a full rebuild), they'd likely prefer to wait until the offseason to shop Luzardo.  That way they'd get a wider group of suitors than they would at the deadline.

what Has happened to my beloved Red Sox ? Their talent and overall roster is in shambles. Do I need to suit up and play shortstop again?
Mark P
8:25
Glass half-full take....the rotation is pitching a lot better than expected, Casas and Duran are hitting well, and O'Neill is apparently the next Babe Ruth
The middle infield is a pretty big question mark, but overall the Red Sox are in quite good shape

Do you think this is Verlander's last season?
Mark P
8:26
Nope

Thoughts on the how gritty and never give up kinda vibe with my Oakland A’s so far? I believe what I said three weeks ago. 81-81. Also thoughts on that nasty pen and if Paul Blackburn has a shot at the Cy
Jose Mesa s blue glove

The A s are playing better. They gonna major league this?  Prevent the evil owner from moving the team?
Mark P
8:28
Mason Miller entering games to "Wild Thing" would be pretty awesome.  I don't think the A's are a particularly good team, but if they actually did remain competitive, it would be the best Cinderella story in ages.

I'll ask this again: Dr frank Jobe for the Hall of fame?? I say unanimous selection
Mark P

100 percent agree.
(For those unfamiliar with the name....Frank Jobe is the doctor who pioneered the Tommy John surgery)

Why do the Dodgers continue to put Chris Taylor out there, seems to be even more lost then in other years. Can’t they send him down to get his act together. Looks Sad!
Blue Samurai
8:30
What Dodgers should do with Chris Taylor?
Mark P
8:32
It looked like Taylor had somewhat bounced back last year from his rough 2022 season, but his start this year has been just truly brutal.

"It's still early" alert #1, but sitting Taylor for a few days to try and clear his head might be a worthwhile endeavor.

8:34
Florial a Yankee killer?  But what is his future with the Guardians?
Mark P
8:34
Since the Guardians don't have many (any?) better options, there are worse ideas than giving Florial an extended look to see what he can do in the big leagues.

Austin Hays its early #2? Tired of Os fans giving up on him and Mullins already
Mark P
8:36
In fairness, Cowser is hitting so unbelievably well that you can't blame O's Nation for wanting to see him in the lineup on a regular basis.  And, DH isn't really an option since Mountcastle/O'Hearn are also both hitting well.
8:39
Hmm, a pause in the chat for some rare breaking Sunday news....Tommy Pham is close to a minor league deal with the White Sox
Blue Samurai
8:45
Tommy Pham would have been a good fit with Dodgers!
Mark P
8:46
Pham has been on the Dodgers' radar in the past, but depending on what this dollar figure ends up being from Chicago, perhaps Pham wanted more clear playing time
8:47
Also, there is a very strong chance Pham is dealt before the deadline anyway, so maybe he'll eventually end up in LA after all

Are the Pirates calling up Skenes with Gonzales on the IL?
Mark P
8:48
The Bucs probably aren't changing their long-term plan for Skenes based on an injury.  Priester likely gets the call as the rotation fill-in.

8:51
If Marlins decide to sell early, would the Mets become suitors for Luzardo?
Mark P
8:51
Miami might not want to move him within the division, but sure, the Mets will be among the many teams that make calls if Luzardo is shopped (rough start notwithstanding)

Mark!!! Where are you???? It’s been 20 minutes since we have heard from you!!!!
Mark P
9:15
Sorry folks, got busy there with the Pham and Teheran signings both happening within short order.  I "knew" I should've started this chat an hour earlier tonight!  Oh well.
Boras 4
9:15
Given the contracts that the Boras four ended up getting this year, do you think owners are finally pushing back and not giving in to his crazy demands?  Boras has been great at getting the massive contracts and this year was very different…is he losing his stronghold?
