Mark P

Scheduling changes prevented a Weekend Chat last weekend, but we're back and running tonight.  Let's open the queue....
Jackson merrill
7:32
Thoughts on his hot start to the season
Mark P
7:33
He looks like he belongs in the majors, which isn't always the case for those rare players who skip Triple-A entirely.  Obviously still very early, but for now, Merrill is looking like a decent everyday player for SD
Marlins
7:34
How do we turn the season around ?
Mark P
7:35
At the risk of being reactive to a 1-9 start, it feels like they can't?  Too many pitching injuries, the lineup is still thin, and the near-total lack of offseason moves indicates that the front office is already looking past this iteration of the roster.
Ober Under
7:36
What the heck happened to me in my first start? Am I tipping pitches?
Mark P
7:37
Aaron Gleeman had a piece in the Athletic today noting that Ober's two worst career starts have both come against the Royals, so it might be that they just have his number.
Will
7:38
Braves have to be in market for front line starter at deadline now correct? Fried being injury prone last few years and youngsters not ready may force their hand imo
Alex A
7:38
What is the best available SP to replace Strider with? Long term or rental
Mark P
7:40
Anthopoulos' history of trading with the Athletics makes me think any of Stripling, Wood, or Blackburn could eventually be on their way to Oakland before the deadline.  Stripling/Wood I'd almost guarantee will be shipped somewhere if they're healthy, and Atlanta is as good a possible landing spot as any.
7:41
What’s the point of voiding my option now as opposed to just not picking it up at the end of the season?
Mark P
7:42
That's a good point, and I'd maybe guess it hints that Schumaker will be fired entirely at some point before the season is over?  This might be done to give him an early jump in exploring the job market, since I have to imagine he's going to get a lot of interest from teams looking for a new manager.
Langford
7:43
does the lack of power through 40 ab concern you? Or too early to panic?
Mark P
7:44
Way too early to panic, though my note earlier about Merrill and players who skip Triple-A could also certainly be applied to prospects who are very quickly rushed up to the big leagues.  The Rangers might have possibly jumped the gun on Langford a bit, but if they decide to send him to Triple-A for a bit to get settled, that's not the end of the world.
Blue Jays
7:45
I know you follow the Jays… do you think if this keeps up we could see guys like Bo,Vladdy and Gausman gone at the deadline? It’s not just the slow start but given this teams history seems hard at this point to see them turning into any kind of powerhouse, especially considering the division they play in.
Mark P
7:46
The Jays have so much money committed to this roster that they would have to be decidedly out of the running before they opted to sell at the deadline, especially if we're talking big cornerstone players.
Needless to say, though, the slow start is very concerning since it seems like the lineup has gone from "inconsistent" to "maybe just bad."
Drew
7:47
What do the Padres need to add offensively to their lineup. Why haven't they signed a Tommy Pham or Brandon Belt?
Mark P
7:48
Feels like at least six or seven teams in baseball should be addressing the "why haven't they signed Tommy Pham or Brandon Belt?" question
The Padres are so desperate to stay under the tax line while still staying in contention that even the modest asking prices for Pham/Belt might be too high
Royals faithful
7:49
Can our starting pitching keep up the great starts and we might have a chance at taking the AL west this season?
Mark P
7:49
I will 100 percent guarantee that the Royals won't win the AL West
7:50
As for the AL Central, I'd still favor a couple of other teams, but maybe the Royals will have one of those years when everything clicks
Barney Coolio
7:51
Is the Strasburg extension the worst contract in baseball history?
Mark P
7:52
Hard to argue against it, since the Nationals got almost literally no return on the investment.  Strasburg's deal is the 22nd-priciest contract in baseball history, and even if you consider other candidates like the Rendon deal or the Miggy Cabrera extension, at least those players were able to somewhat stay on the field
It's a tough historical footnote for Strasburg, and it's awful that his injuries have impacted his day-to-day life.  He was an excellent pitcher when healthy, and he still had a terrific career
Joshua C.
7:53
How bad of a hit is Biebers injury for the guardians? Can they overcome it?
Guardo Man
7:53
What do the guardians do now that Shane Bieber is on the shelf?? Is the success sustainable??
Mark P
7:54
Cleveland has withstood so many pitching injuries in the past that nobody should be shocked if Curry or some prospect we've barely heard of steps into the rotation that is immediately pretty good.  But you're right, losing Bieber is definitely a big hit, especially since he was pitching so well in the early going
Guest
7:55
Who should the Marlins hire at manager next year given the news that Skip is probably out after this season?
Mark P
7:55
Given Peter Bendix's moves to date, it'll be a coach or manager from the Rays organization
Tyler
7:58
Pirates for real
Mark P
7:58
I point to last season's hot Pirates start and how things ended up, but who knows, maybe Pittsburgh is another team who is ready to turn the corner
Dave
7:59
How much does Strider’s injury impact the Braves and NL East?
Mark P
8:00
Atlanta's lineup is so good that they're still a favorite to make the playoffs even without Strider.  But, obviously, this puts a lot more pressure on Fried to turn things around, on Sale to stay healthy, and onwards down the current pitching depth chart.
Charles B
8:02
When do you think Esteury Ruiz will be call up?
Mark P
8:04
After he strings together some good at-bats at Triple-A and gets a bit of confidence back.  It's a little tricky since Ruiz has already hit well at Triple-A and doesn't have anything to really prove in the minors anymore, yet plus it's hard to truly evaluate a hitter who plays in that very hitter-friendly PCL environment
John
8:04
What does new ownership mean for the 2024 Orioles?
Mark P
8:05
Most immediately, it could allow the front office more spending capacity at the trade deadline
Chev Chelios
8:06
How soon could we see Houston either start trading for help or start trading assets off? CWS…same question
