The Weekend Chat is back after a one-week hiatus, as your humble moderator was on a Spring Training vacation down in Florida. Let's get to the questions!  (About baseball, not necessarily my trip.)
Buccos Fan

Will Jared Jones make the starting rotation? He has earned it
Mark P
8:13
Jones has looked tremendous this spring, and since Pittsburgh needs rotation help anyway, it's hard to imagine he won't be part of the Opening Day roster.
Trout
8:14
Does Trout play more than 120 games this season?
Mark P
8:15
Yes.  I like rooting for players to stay healthy, and baseball is better if Mike Trout is on the field
FortMyersMan
8:15
Will the Rays win the AL East?
Mark P
8:15
Baltimore is my pick to win the division, but the Rays will make the playoffs

New ownership may give me authority to spend to league average. Spend it on keeping home-grown talent or buy big on  free agents (pitching)????
Mark P
8:17
Why not both?  If the O's are going to be even a mid-tier payroll team, the Diamondbacks might be a good model as a franchise that locks up young stars (Carroll) while also having spending room to land guys like E-Rod

Hi Mark, do you agree with the decision to add Vogelbach over Lukes for the final Blue Jays roster spot? Lukes had a great spring
Mark P
8:18
I would've preferred Lukes since he has positional versatility, and the Jays are lacking in true outfield depth.

So happy the Mets pulled the trigger on JD Martinez. Do you think they truly had the highest offer? Hard to believe no one offered more
Mark P
8:19
The Giants apparently offered more money, but Martinez had concerns over playing at Oracle Park, figuring the stadium might depress his numbers and hurt his longer-term earning potential
Langford
8:20
Am I hitting more than 30 homers this year?
Mark P
8:21
I mean, if he hits "only" 25 or something, that's still pretty awesome for a kid who was drafted less than a year ago, right?

That said, the sky is the limit for Langford.  The Rangers wouldn't be calling him up this quickly if they weren't convinced he can hit immediately.

Opinion on Yamamoto so far?
Mark P
8:22
He looked pretty bad in his first game, but I'm not going to write him off based on a single outing.

If you’re the new owner of the Orioles, who do you try to lock down to a deal first- Adley, Gunnar, or Holliday?
Mark P
8:24
Henderson and Holliday are Boras clients, so that might be one obstacle for an extension right there.  In a vacuum, I might pick Henderson because extending a catcher (even a stud like Rutschman) carries more risk, and Holliday as the son of a wealthy MLB star might have more financial security in going year-to-year

Thoughts on the Phillies situation re: no Walker, and no lh bench bat other than a backup catcher?
Mark P
8:27
Hall, Clemens, or some of the LHH outfielders could be called up to address that latter need.  Losing Walker for a while isn't good, obviously, though Turnbull has looked good enough this spring that he could be a really interesting find

Adley, Gunnar, or Holliday should be a poll
Mark P
8:28
Who would you extend first?

Gunnar Henderson (34.4% | 378 votes)

Jackson Holliday (16.2% | 178 votes)

Adley Rutschman (49.4% | 543 votes)

How long before we see Jordan Lawler back in Arizona and starting at shortstop?
Mark P
8:30
Perdomo's a pretty good player in his own right, though if Lawlar forces the issue by crushing Triple-A pitching, Lawlar might find himself in a timeshare relatively early into the season.
8:31
Arizona is in an interesting position this season since they're now firmly trying to win, yet still trying to find ways to properly develop and incorporate a top prospect like Lawlar.  No reason the two goals can't dovetail, of course, since there are countless examples of a star prospect giving an extra spark to a contender (i.e. Evan Carter just last year)

What are the chances Jesse Chavez signs with the Braves now that he has been released?
Mark P
8:32
When I posted that item on MLBTR yesterday, there were immediately at least 50 messages on X saying "he's going to the Braves."

And honestly, I'd put it at well over 50 percent.

Do you see the Mets offering a deal for Jordan Montgomery ?
Mark P
8:33
Nope.  Doesn't really fit with the Mets' plan for 2024
John
8:33
Will White Sox have the worst record in team history this year?
Mark P
8:34
The 1970 White Sox lost 106 games, and last year's team fell short of the "record" with a mere 101 wins.

Again sticking with optimism, I'll say Chicago avoids the 106-loss threshold, but it'll be close
Ranger Danger
8:34
What do the Rangers do once all of their SP is healthy?
Mark P
8:35
Move guys to the bullpen, but more realistically, it's probably unlikely that "everyone" will be healthy by the second half of the season.  That includes the currently injured pitchers and the guys on the current staff
90 Reds
8:36
Boy the Reds positional depth thinned quickly. Do you see them going outside the organization for the final roster spot?
Mark P
8:37
The Espinal trade probably fills that last hole for them, but you're right, what a wild turn of events.  The Reds went from having "too many" players to having to swing a last-minute deal with the Jays

How was your trip to Florida?

Had a great time!  Hung out with friends, enjoyed some nice weather, and saw some fun baseball at the spring camps of the Jays (two games), Phillies, Yankees, and Tigers (one game apiece).  Great environments all around, but I have to particularly shout out Joker Marchant Stadium, which is an amazing place to see a game
I also highly recommend the hamburgers at the Yankees' ballpark, and the popcorn at the Blue Jays' ballpark.
