The Weekend Chat is underway!  Let's delve into some of your questions....
Tom from Philly
11:17
Am I remembering this wrong...if Snell waits until deeper into the season to sign, does that remove the draft pick loss due to the QO?
Mark P
11:18
If he signs after the draft, the compensatory pick attached to the QO is no more.
But obviously waiting until mid-July is not an ideal scenario for Snell, or likely the team that signs him
KC Pain
11:19
What do you think of Josh Naylors hold on the 1B spot?  They going to give him leash or give away AB at every turn?
Mark P
11:20
Manzardo and Naylor might have something of a split of the 1B/DH duties.  Not sure what you're implying with "give away at-bats," since Naylor has been overall quite a solid hitter in his young career
11:21
And the Guardians need all the hitting help they can get
Dodgers infield
11:21
Was this a mistake?
Mark P
11:23
Obviously Mookie Betts is awesome, and Miguel Rojas is a fine defensive player.  But counting on Lux as an everyday shortstop was perhaps risky on the face of it, and it's not a great sign that the Dodgers are already pivoting early in Spring Training (let alone the season)
11:24
LA's lineup is loaded enough that they can get away with just starting Rojas every day as a glove-first option, if they want to move Betts back to second base.

11:24
Will Jorbit Vivas make the Yanks bench with the Peraza injury?
Mark P
11:26
Vivas is a very promising youngster but he hasn't played much Triple-A ball, and struggled when he was at Triple-A.  The Yankees are probably going to acquire a veteran utility infielder type and give Vivas more seasoning in Scranton-WB, though it wouldn't at all be surprising if Vivas makes his big league debut this year

11:26
If Snell wants to play in Anaheim what is standing in his way?
Tim
11:26
Speaking of Snell, heard his preference is to stay on the west coast, specifically with the Angels. You believe he signs with them?
Mark P
11:27
It probably all comes down to money, as while Snell might want to pitch in Anaheim all things being equal, he isn't going to accept just any offer.

11:27
What's the possibility that Toronto signs Snell or Montgomery since they didn't improve the offense and Manoah is not the answer?
Mark P
11:30
Because of Snell's QO status and because Toronto was a luxury tax team, signing Snell would cost the Jays two draft picks and $1MM.  So Montgomery is likelier their preferred option in this scenario since Montgomery wasn't eligible for a qualifying offer in the first place.

The Jays make some sense as a possible "mystery team" that could be in on one of these pitchers.  It would represent yet another big contract to a starter, yet it would give Toronto quite a deep rotation and perhaps even make Manoah expendable in a trade.
JROD SHOW 44
11:30
So….. JD Martinez. Makes ALOT of sense for Miami
Mark P
11:31
Most definitely.  But we'll have to see if the Marlins are willing to pay the price tag, even if JDM's demands are probably lower than they were at the start of the winter
Hank
11:31
Guerrero to third. Turner and Votto share first. Why not?
Mark P
11:31
Because Guerrero is a poor defensive third baseman.
Tiger Lover
11:32
Do you see anyway how the Tigers can move on from Javier Baez?  This is not a player that fits now.  Definitely not a Scott Harris type of player.  Your thoughts
Mark P
11:34
While we've seen a lot of "untradeable" contracts get moved over the years, Baez might be about as close as it gets an immovable deal.  His dropoff since coming to Detroit has been incredibly pronounced, and he'd have to have a big rebound year to even somewhat revive his trade value.  (Though of course, if he has a big rebound year, suddenly the Tigers will feel better about the situation.)
Urias
11:35
The Os need to move him to fit Mayo, who looks like he's extremely ready. Who does Urias make sense for as a 3B/2B/emergency SS?
Mark P
11:36
If the Yankees and Orioles weren't in the same division, Urias would be a great fit for New York's utility infield needs.

The issue with Mayo is that putting him on the big league roster might lead to a bit of a playing time crunch, and the O's want him playing every day somewhere.  It's a pretty great problem for the Orioles to have that they might literally have too many young stars to fit into a lineup.

11:37
If you could be at any game from the past, which game would you attended?
Mark P
11:38
As a Jays fan, Game 6 of the 1993 World Series immediately leaps to mind.  But historically.....maybe Game 7 of the 1955 Series, when Brooklyn finally beat the Yankees

11:38
What will happen to JD Davis and what changes will the Giants make to their roster without him?
Armchair GM
11:38
How many teams will be interested in JD Davis if he clears waivers?  Wouldn’t he be great bench player to have/occasional starter?
Ron
11:39
Which team do you predict jd Davis ending up with?
Djboy2898
11:39
Huge Giants fan here but I’m kinda scratching my head over the JD Davis thing! I like him as a player and I thought that we could’ve found him enough at bats as a super utility guy almost like Flores but younger but I definitely think he would have some Trade value. Maybe KC, The Brewers or Detroit what do you see happen from your crystal ball
Mark P
11:42
Whole lot of JD Davis questions in the queue today, unsurprisingly.

Seattle makes some sense to me.  Maybe the Padres, Cubs, Brewers, or Texas if they're really worried about Josh Jung's calf.  Really a lot of teams could fit on paper or maybe in more hypothetical situations, plus you never know when another injury could create a roster hole
11:43
As to how the Giants will pivot without Davis, obviously signing Chapman was the replacement.  It is increasingly looking like Nick Ahmed will make the OD roster, so that brings more infield depth into the fold.
Mainz Athletics
11:43
Tough blow for the Red Sox with Giolito. Montgomery does make sense, but they would clearly overpay for a few prime years of Montgomery when there is no clear window of contention anytime soon?!
Breslow
11:43
if It wasn’t his first year on the job I would say he’s in the hot seat. Not sure how that elbow issue gets missed in a physical combined with Sale trade. Terrible look, why not get both Snell and Montgomery? Would that save the Red Sox off-season?
Mark P
11:45
Signing both players would be an incredible surprise given the rest of Boston's offseason, and given Mainz's point, even signing one might be viewed internally as unwise if the team doesn't think it can be truly competitive in 2024.

In terms of Breslow's job security, he's operating under the payroll parameters set by ownership.  Tough situation for a first-time PBO to step into.

The Dodgers needs to fix the problem in the shortstop position.  Adames make sense  or maybe a change of scenery for Javy Baez.
Mark P
11:48
As mentioned earlier, Baez's trade value is just about rock bottom.  Detroit could move him for the sake of moving him and just eat most of his salary, though then they have to deal with a hole of their own at shortstop.

Moving Adames this deep into Spring Training probably isn't happening for the Brewers, as that might bring back some "here we go again..." vibes a la the Hader deal.  If the Brewers aren't in contention then a trade will start to seem very likely closer to the deadline.
