The Weekend Chat is off to a cracking start, as I dropped my unopened soda can on the floor.  While I carefully open it over my sink, let's let a few questions file in....

Any news on Adam Duvall
Mark P
7:28
It's been almost a month since reports from Jon Heyman indicated that Duvall's market was basically down to the Angels and Red Sox, and it would be a surprise if he went elsewhere.  So I'm not sure what the delay might be, unless the offers from those two teams still aren't where Duvall wants them to be, or perhaps another team or two has entered the market and complicated matters

Are the pirates going to make a deal for a SP?
Angelo
7:28
Will Edward Cabrera be wearing a Pirates hat to start spring training?
Trex
7:28
is the Edward Cabrera trade gonna happen before tmr morning because Jason Mackey said he sees Cabrera being a pirate by Monday morning?
Mark P
7:30
Since Garrett has a minor shoulder problem, Perez is untouchable, and Luzardo's asking price is also very high, Cabrera is the most realistic target the Bucs could land, unless we see a real blockbuster and Luzardo changes hands.  There appears to be some smoke in this direction, so it'll be interesting to see if the Marlins and Pirates can complete something, or if there's still a gap in asking prices
Soda
7:31
What are you drinking that you dropped?
Mark P
7:31
Coke Zero.  And incredibly, there was zero explosion when I opened it over the sink, despite the drop.

7:32
Can we take farhan at his word giants have probably moved on from any interest in signing Chapman , Bellinger , Montgomery or snell ?
Mark P
7:32
I took that comment with a pretty big grain of salt, since I still find it hard to believe that SF is comfortable going into the season with this current rotation

7:33
We already have so many infielders, why sign Escobar and Vogelbach?
Mark P
7:34
These are the kinds of depth deals that most teams make for Spring Training, so I'm a little doubtful that either Escobar or Vogelbach are strong candidates to make the Opening Day roster.  There's a chance the Blue Jays could be adding depth because they're lining up a trade of another infielder, but the likelihood is that these are just normal due diligence adds
Larry
7:34
Will the Astros sign Alex Bregman r Kyle Tucker r both.
Mark P
7:35
Feels like neither, to me.  Bregman feels like he's leaving after the season, and unless Jim Crane modifies his six-year policy, Tucker also seems likely to depart.

Better value Grichuk @2mil or Whitfield @7? Or just the best fit for their current teams?
Mark P
7:36
Grichuk as a pure platoon bat is a nice deal at that price, and I'm not sure exactly how much Merrifield is going to play in Philly.

Hello friends, Theo Epstein for commissioner?
Mark P
7:38
People have been citing Theo as a possible future commish for years, so I'd think he would certainly seem like an interesting candidate for the job

What about the Willy Adames rumors
Mark P
7:40
There's a chance that moving Adames now (with players getting to camp and ST kicking into gear) might be somewhat demoralizing to the Brewers, though not to the extent of the Josh Hader deal two years ago.  With Adames coming off a relative down year, it could be that Milwaukee is also having difficulty finding common ground in trade talks.

This is all to say that I wouldn't be shocked if Adames is still dealt, but I think it's increasingly unlikely by this point in the offseason.
7:41
(So, watch this, Adames will now get dealt tomorrow.)

How do baseball fans keep the motivation to continue watching when your team perpetually misses the playoffs?
Mark P
7:42
As a fan of a team who went over two decades without making the playoffs.....I dunno, I just like baseball in general.

What are the odds none of the Boras four are signed going into March?
Larry
7:42
Is it possible Scott Boras overplayed his hand for the Boras Four?
Mark P
7:43
I enjoy how "The Boras Four" has caught on as a name, as if these players are 1930's bank robbers or something.

And I think all four of Montgomery, Snell, Chapman, and Bellinger will be signed by Opening Day.  Perhaps not by March 1, but deals will eventually be reached.  All it takes is one injury in Spring Training to change the dynamic and bring a new team into the mix.

More fWAR in 2024, Chris Sale or Lucas Giolito? And no hedging!
Mark P
7:45
More fWAR in 2024?

Lucas Giolito (44.3% | 579 votes)

Chris Sale (55.7% | 727 votes)

Total Votes: 1,306

My pick is Giolito just because I can't be certain Sale can stay healthy for a good chunk of the season

Can we assume that Bogaerts moving to second means the Padres have a real intention on extending Kim?
Mark P
7:48
The position change makes the team better in 2024, which I think is SD's top priority.  Given the Padres' financial situation, it's an open question if they'll be able to afford retaining Kim, since he seems positioned to land a very nice contract.  Plus, there's Jackson Merrill looming as the shortstop of the future.

Do the Orioles have another move in them for a starting pitcher?
Mark P
7:50
The Bradish news is a big concern, obviously, so I'd be surprised if the O's weren't at least looking into a second-tier starter (i.e. a Michael Lorenzen).  They have the minor league depth to trade for a Luzardo or a Cease, but the Marlins and White Sox might've even upped their prices knowing that the Orioles might be without Bradish for a while
Jaxon
7:50
Mark, can you see Frelick getting starts in the Brewers infield? Thanks
Mark P
7:51
They wouldn't be working him out in the infield if they didn't plan on eventually playing him there.  Assuming Frelick shows he can play passable defense at 2B/3B, he'll get in the mix and perhaps become a super-util guy
Jacob Young
7:53
Am I the Nationals starting centerfielder?
Mark P
7:54
A rebuilding team really should be seeing what they have in Young, yet the Nationals also aren't quite willing to give up on Robles given that his 2023 was such an injury-riddled wash.  It doesn't really hurt Washington to have Robles as a backup if Young emerges as the starter.

First Felix goes out with a UCL for the year, now it looks like Bradish will be done for the year...even if Means comes back and is anywhere near what he can be, we still have large holes in our pitching. HOW MANY MORE PITCHERS GOING DOWN WILL IT TAKE FOR US TO SIGN MONTGOMERY?!?!?!
Mark P
7:57
Those decisions have to be made at the ownership level, and it could be that with the pending sale, the front office can't get such a big contract green-lit.
