Weekend Chat!  It's here!  Let's get cracking!  I can't know how to hear any more about tables!
Ryan
7:33
Ken Rosenthal has reported that the Royals are looking to trade for a closer. Who do you think they get? I keep going back to Jansen or Raisel Iglesias
Mark P
7:35
A trade for either would be a little unusual, though I guess maybe Iglesias might "fit" since he's under contract for the next two seasons?  That might have more appeal to a Royals team who might look more like contenders in 2025 than in 2024, but it probably seems more likely that KC will pursue a pitcher with closing experience, rather than a veteran capital-C closer

What are we doing?
Mark P
7:37
Giving Bendix an evaluation year, basically, while not punting entirely on the 2024 season.  It has the feel of the Marlins viewing their 2023 success as something of a fluke, rather than a sign that they were ready to become true contenders.
Guardian Outfielder
7:38
Are we going to see any moves by CLE now that the Diamond contract for this year is done.
Mark P
7:39
I think the final court date is sometime next week, but after everything is completely official, I could certainly see the Guardians get more active.  Same with the Rangers, and the Twins have already started to get rolling with the Polanco trade and Santana's signing
Future stars
7:39
how badly does Cleveland regret moving Nolan Jones?
Mark P
7:41
The Guards have dealt away a few players in recent years (Jones, Yainer Diaz, Will Benson) who look like they can be productive big leaguers, which is a tough pill to swallow for a team with such a shaky lineup.  Cleveland's chances of contending would look a lot better with Jones and Benson in the outfield mix, and perhaps a Diaz/Naylor catching combo
Diamond
7:41
Bees?
Mark P
7:42
As evidenced by the opening line of this chat, I'm giving the bees/beads stuff a break in favour of "I Think You Should Leave" lines.
Curious
7:42
Steve Adams said in his recent chat that he thought the Brewers would win  the NL Central even before the Hoskins signing.  did you feel the same, and. If
Mark P
7:43
If the Cubs get Bellinger, they're my pick.  They might even be my pick without Bellinger since I think their roster has fewer marks than a Milwaukee team that is now sans Burnes.
1st rounders
7:43
How often do former first round picks never reach the majors? Do you have any stats on that?
Mark P
7:45
It varies from year to year, but I just now went to look at the 2013 draft, to pick one random year.  Of the 39 players in the "first round" (also counting compensatory picks), seven guys never made the majors at all, and five or six others made the Show but only for a handful of games
7:46
The point is, it's very hard to predict who's going to make it as a big leaguer and who isn't.
Nightman
7:46
Why do you think there’s been so little word on Woodruff? Would 30/2 be enough to get him on the angels?
Mark P
7:48
Woodruff's chief focus this winter is on getting healthy, and I'm sure he and his reps are probably weighing a lot of offers that look pretty similar in dollar value.  So it'll likely come down to a comfort decision for Woodruff, who is certainly weighing such factors as a team's ability to contend, their medical staff, their history with pitching injuries, and a ton of other things
Skubal
7:48
Skubal is a Boris client. If they do not trade him, then the Tigers will lose him in free agency. At what point should the Tigers trade him to maximize his trade return value?
Mark P
7:49
Not every Boras client tests free agency, it should be said.  Plus, Skubal is still arb-controlled through 2026 and hasn't even hit his peak as a pitcher yet, so it makes no sense for Detroit to consider a trade any time soon
That guy
7:50
I know it has been a running gag but could San Diego trade for Jo Adell? What is his value at this point? Morejon and a lower level prospect?
Mark P
7:51
Angels would want more than that, and they might view this season as the real make-or-break year for Adell now that there's a bit more room in the outfield and at DH for him to gain at-bats.

are the Padres ok or do they still need to dump salary
Mark P
7:52
They have roughly $40MM in payroll space left to get up to the $200MM mark, and they're about $22MM under the luxury tax threshold.

So there's still room to spend, and while the Padres wouldn't say no if someone offered to take a big chunk of Cronenworth's deal off their books or something, the biggest cuts are probably done.
7:53
Of course, the Padres still have some holes to fill, so some minor salary trimming might be necessary to fit some desired pieces while avoiding the tax and staying under $200MM
Buster
7:54
Why do the Giants think that 3 rookie pitchers and reliever being converted to a starter will be a competitive team. They will be between 15 and 20 under at the break.
Mark P
7:55
Feels like the Stripling trade was a precursor to some forthcoming move, since I agree that the pitching staff needs some work.  Signing Snell or Montgomery?  Trading for Bieber or Luzardo?
Red Sox GM
7:56
Do I need to be careful now that Theo Epstein is back around Fenway.
Mark P
7:56
It could be that Theo's advice to ownership is "hey, maybe don't fire your GM every 4-5 years?"
Blue Jays fan
7:57
What kind of package would it take for the jays to get Willy Adames?
Mark P
7:59
It's not a 1-to-1 comparison between a starting pitcher and an everyday player, but I could see Milwaukee wanting a similar package to Burnes --- two MLB-ready young players, and more longer-term prospect (or a comp pick, for teams who have those).

Toronto doesn't seem like a great fit for Adames since their farm system is pretty thin

With the trade of Burnes I keep thinking of Brewers as a landing spot for Manoah as the teams needs match up well. Manoah & Otto Lopez or Espinal for Adames & Weimer? Jays would still need to replace Manoah but they fill the 3B need (I know Adames hasn't played there in a decade) and get a right handed platoon bat for the OF with moderate upside for more. I'm not high on Manoah so it depends on if the Brewers believe in their development. Too many words, sorry
Mark P
8:03
Manoah's 2023 season was so shaky that I find it hard to think the Brewers want him as the key part of an Adames trade.  Wiemer also has more value than Espinal or Lopez, too.

8:03
Did new ownership cause the Burnes trade to happen?
Mark P
8:04
The timing was apparently coincidental, since the sale hasn't been approved by MLB yet
Tim
8:04
Angels just picked up Aaron Hicks, is this the off season we finally get to see Jo Adell traded, so you can stop hearing about if the Angels are going trade him questions for good?
Mark P
8:04
Given how Moniak is unproven and Trout is an injury risk, there might be plenty of room for Hicks and Adell to find at-bats
8:05
We'll briefly pause the chat for a few minutes due to some news....Jay Jackson signs with the Twins.

I'll get a post up on the site, but keep those questions coming in!
8:25
And we're back!  Can you believe the Twins, making a signing during the Weekend Chat?!  What a lack of decorum!
Patrick
8:26
Why don't the Reds get any love as the favorite in the NL Central? You said the Cubs are your favorite if they bring Bellinger back. Why?
