It's the last Weekend Chat of January, and it feels like this month has absolutely flown by.  Let's open up the question hatch and see what's what...

I am not a fan of Getz but why the crazy push back on his asking a high price for Cease?
Mark P
6:47
Most fans aren't White Sox fans, and thus they see Cease as only a piece to be moved to a more relevant team, without much thought into how a Cease trade will or should impact Chicago's future.

It makes perfect sense that Getz would (initially) ask for a ton for Cease, who is his top trade asset apart from Luis Robert.
Jays fan

Are the Jays going to sign someone to be a primary DH? Anybody??…
Mark P
6:48
I'm of the opinion that they team doesn't need a primary DH, since Springer/Vlad/probably Kiermaier or one of the catchers might benefit from being regularly rotated through the DH spot.
But in general, they do need another hitter, and most of the top bats left are more DH types.  I'd prefer to see Justin Turner, who could help out the Jays' bigger infield needs on at least a part-time basis

KC done enough to be serious in the Central? Good to see them spending
Mark P
6:50
Still feels like KC is a few players away from being an actual contender, even in a lesser division.  If any of those "few players" ends up being an in-house guy who breaks out, all the better, since they'll need that too for their longer-term outlook
Joe

Do the nats make any more moves?
Mark P
6:50
Nothing too major, maybe a veteran on a one-year deal or something.  The rotation could use another arm.
Doug
6:51
Why haven’t the Padres gone for Hicks for CF at league minimum? Then use the money saved on some more bats and an arm.
Mark P
6:52
I'm pretty surprised at the lack of public news on Hicks' market.  I figured a lot of teams would have interest based on his revival in Baltimore, and the fact that he would cost nothing but a minimum salary.
6:53
Perhaps Hicks is sitting on multiple offers and is still deciding, or he's waiting for a more solid offer from a particular team he's hoping to land with

Do the Giants chances of signing Snell or Chapman get lower as we get closer to spring training? Seems like other teams could jump them as we get closer and prices get lower.
Mark P
6:54
True, though if their price tags do drop, that theoretically opens up the market for more suitors.  Since San Francisco is (on paper) one of the teams with more money to spend, they should be able to outbid more offers currently on the table

Thoughts on the Keith extension?
Mark P
6:56
Really interesting move, and a bold show of faith in Keith as a future cornerstone.
6:58
Keith is now locked into Detroit's future, plus they have Josh Jung and JH Malloy on the way up as well.  It could make for a crowded infield, or perhaps Malloy could be part of the outfield, or maybe one of Malloy/Jung could be a trade chip

Think the Brewers have enough juice to pick  up Justin Turner on a one year deal?
Mark P
6:59
The Hoskins signing probably removes any chance of Turner joining the team, though it would be an interesting move

Quarter Pounder or Whopper?
Mark P
7:00
My hot take is neither.  I'll take a good old-fashioned Harvey's hamburger, in a reference that might mean nothing to anyone outside Canada
Belli
7:01
Are we to believe Belli doesn’t have one legitimate offer?
Mark P
7:01
I'm sure he's received plenty of "legitimate" offers.  They just haven't met his asking price yet, or his price hasn't yet dropped

Chances on Philly winning
Mark P
7:02
Pretty good.  They've come close two years in a row, there's a lot of good young and veteran talent on the roster, and they seem to kick it up a notch in the playoffs.  Philadelphia should be on anyone's list of World Series favorites
M's Fan
7:04
How much traction does this Cease talk get, in your opinion?  Maybe a deal around the idea Moncada in addition to the M's with for Miller/Woo and Urias to the Sox?
Dipoto
7:04
Mariners reported interested in Cease: legitimate or white sox trying to make it seem like the market is hotter for their player?
jaycub
7:05
Nightengale reported that mariners were interested in Dylan Cease and that Miller or Woo would most likely involved in it. It doesn't make much sense to me but what do you think a trade for Cease would look like?
Tony
7:05
What kind of return would be expected if the White Sox trade Cease to Seattle?
Mark P
7:06
Lots of questions here about the Cease/Mariners trade rumor, and I don't doubt that Seattle checked in out of due diligence, at least.  It is a little odd that the M's would be looking for pitching help when their rotation is already pretty strong, yet with Ray and Gonzales gone, adding a more experienced arm like Cease might be their preference over counting on all the youngsters to keep performing
7:08
I'd tend to think that the Mariners are one of the less-likely contenders if Cease is dealt at all, but you can never rule out Jerry Dipoto when it comes to swinging a surprise trade.

Going by what the White Sox have reportedly been asking for Cease in other deals, I'd guess they want one of Miller/Woo, at least one other pitcher (Hancock? Berroa?) and at least one infield prospect who isn't Cole Young.
Darren
7:09
So, looks like Bieber’s staying, right?!
Brian
7:11
Hey Mark, what do you make of the rumors the ms are in on Dylan Cease? If they want another starting pitcher why not go after Blake Snell? These rumors don’t make sense to me
Mark P
7:11
Rats, clicked on a second question.  To address Cease first, it's because Snell costs a fortune and Cease is much less expensive in terms of money, if not in prospect cost
7:12
As for Bieber, I would've thought he would've been gone by now, but it could be teams are too wary of his health status.  The Guardians might hang onto him until closer to the deadline, or perhaps not trade him whatsoever and hope for just a QO draft pick as compensation

What does Sasaki signing the contract with NPB club mean? Will he be available in MLB next year? If he is, would he be worth more than Yamamoto considering his younger age?
Mark P
7:15
It depends on the nature of his contract whether Sasaki has any kind of out clause to leave NPB early.  Otherwise, the Marines hold his rights until he has nine years of NPB service time.

Obviously an exit could be worked out earlier and one likely will, yet Sasaki asking out so unusually early in his NPB tenure is an anomaly.
