Now that the holiday season is over, the Weekend Chat can now move back to the actual weekend!  Let's dive into your questions...
Craig Breslow

What’s my next move?
Mark P
7:43
Boston is even more likely to add pitching now that Sale is gone, and my guess is that it's more of a mid-tier arm rather than a Montgomery or a Snell.  Someone like Marcus Stroman would be an interesting fit with the Sox on paper.

What are your thoughts on the job Stearns has done in New York?
Mark P
7:46
Obviously very early to tell, but Stearns is taking the foot off the pedal in Queens and amassing lower-level talent to try and raise the Mets' floor, rather than their ceiling.  While the Mets would like to win in 2024, their top goal might be evaluating what they have in their younger players so Stearns can decide whether or not to start "going for it" next winter or perhaps in 2026

7:47
Teo to the dodgers possibly? Thoughts?
Mark P
7:48
Seems like a very solid move.  Taylor isn't exactly a reliable everyday type of bat, so moving Taylor down into more of a supersub role would be ideal

Even if the Bluejays resign a BP guy like Hicks, sign Soler or Martinez, aren't they at best were they ended last season? Where can they go to take it to the next level?
Mark P
7:50
Toronto seems to be putting an awful lot of faith in Vlad/Kirk/Springer/Varsho all being better next year, which is both understandable yet awfully risky.  Will all four improve from their 2023 numbers?  Probably unlikely, and your tolerance of the Jays' offseason might hinge on how many of the four you think can or will bounce back.
7:51
You can say this about any team, but it would be enormously helpful for the Blue Jays if they could get someone from the minors or their current bench (Schneider, Clement, Biggio, Espinal) to become at least a steady regular.  Solidifying one of the infield holes from within would check off a big box.

Bees?

Be....no, wait, I'm demanding a trade before I finish.

Do you think the Mariners are better now than at the beginning of the offseason?
Mark P
7:54
They need another 2B/3B in my view, but overall, I do think they're at least a bit better.  Ray for Desclafani is maybe a bit of a wash considering how Ray was going to be miss a lot of next season anyway, and Haniger/Garver should at least match what Teo/Suarez did in 2023.
Even if it's by a tiny amount at the moment, I would say Seattle has improved.  And, of course, lots of time left for Dipoto to swing a few more trades

Is Luzardo a possibility for the Dodgers?
Mark P
7:55
Sure, in the sense that they have the prospect depth to get him away from the Marlins.  But Miami isn't moving Luzardo unless they get an absolute haul, and if the Dodgers are willing to (somewhat) empty the farm for a guy, they might prefer someone other than Luzardo
Jordan Montgomery
7:56
Who do you think I will be playing for this coming season?
Mark P
7:56
Still think it'll end up being Texas

Why doesn’t it sound like there is any activity or talks around Burnes being traded?
Bay Hope
7:57
Winn and another mid level prospect plus JD Davis enough to get Burnes? Or would the Giants need to give up more? Only a rental for a year right now so not seeing top prospects being moved for him.
Mark P
7:59
Recent reports have suggested the Brewers might hang onto Burnes, perhaps at least until the trade deadline.  Obviously the Brewers want to still win this year, so with the unexpected Woodruff development, it could be that the team will just go for it one more time with Burnes/Adames, and perhaps risk them both leaving in free agency.
8:00
The biggest knock against this scenario, of course, is that the Brewers would then be losing Woodruff, Burnes, and Adames for nothing apart from probably QO-attached compensation picks
8:01
And as for that Giants offer, it would take more than that to get Milwaukee's attention
Jake
8:02
Will any team risk the public relations static to sign Trevor Bauer?
Mark P
8:02
Very doubtful
Guardians of the Galaxy
8:02
Do you think the Guardians are done trying to boost its OF production with the minor league trades or do you think they might spend a few dollars on the low end of the FA market to acquire someone like a Tommy Pham?
Mark P
8:03
It's possible they're just in a total holding pattern until their TV situation is figured out, and by which time who knows who might still be on the market.

Florial has some upside but obviously isn't a sure thing, so I agree that the Guardians need to do more with their outfield.  It's just hard to see them spending anything of note at the moment, even if someone like Pham wouldn't cost all that much
MLB nerd
8:04
Do you call it MLB or the MLB? Do you get as irritated as I do when people call it “the MLB”?
Mark P
8:05
I feel like the league has made more of a concerted effort to get "MLB" over as a brand name, yet I'll still run into people not having any idea what I'm talking about when I make a casual reference to MLB.  They just know it as "baseball."

8:06
What are the chances that the Marlins would be willing to take back less of a prospect haul for one of their starting pitchers if a team is willing to take back Avisail Garcia s contract?
Mark P
8:07
Garcia is still owed at least $29MM through 2025, which isn't a huge amount.  Trading pitching is so valuable that I can't see the Marlins really diminishing one of their prime trade assets by attaching it to a modestly "bad" contract
Orioles
8:08
Do Cowser, Norby, Kremer and Urias get Cease to Baltimore?
Mark P
8:09
I tend to think yes, but Baltimore wouldn't offer that.  Kremer is a good pitcher in his own right, so the upgrade from Kremer to Cease very probably isn't worth the Cowser/Norby/Urias package in the Orioles' view
Shota Imanaga
8:10
Is my market shrinking and I have to settle for a contract under $100M?
Mark P
8:10
Doesn't seem like it.  I'm pretty confident Imanaga will top $100MM.
Though now if he lands like $98.5MM or something close, I'll be very annoyed

Any chance of the Brewers signing a DH bat? Soler, Martinez, Pederson, etc.
Mark P
8:12
A DH-only guy locks that position up, so the Brewers would have less room to find at-bats for all their outfielders (or to give Yelich a day off).

Milwaukee's move would seem to be signing a first baseman or a bigger bat for 2B or 3B, and leaving DH relatively open for multiple players to be rotated through
