It's time for the Weekend Chat!  Let's take a minute to wait a few more questions to filter in, then get to answerin'

Any connection with Yariel Rodriguez & NYM ?
Mark P
7:29
The Mets were one of the 11 teams known to have been looking at Rodriguez, but not much is known about his market.  He might be the kind of pitcher that the bigger-market clubs turn to as a backup plan once the bigger names are off the board
Which does perhaps give some opening for a smaller-market team to swoop in
Alex

How soon after his posting will Yamamoto likely sign? Is it likely he signs before Thanksgiving at all? Or could this draw out into January?
Mark P
7:30
There's no chance he signs within two days of his window opening.  My guess is maybe mid-December?  Ohtani's free agency could also likely be a factor in what happens with YY

With Nola returning to Philly, are the Braves the favorites for Gray?
Mark P
7:31
I dunno about "the" favorites, but Atlanta has a lot to offer.  One detail I forgot to mention in the Gray/Braves post earlier is that Gray is from Tennessee and lives in Nashville, so the Braves are closer to home for him

Anything on Jays? is Ohtani possible? Soler? Sign a good starter and then trade from that end?
Mark P
7:33
In order...

  1. Ohtani is possible on paper, but I'd characterize the Blue Jays as longer shots to actually make a signing
  2. Putting on my Jays fan hat here, Soler is a little too inconsistent for the kind of hitter I'd like to see Toronto acquire
  3. There seems a distinct chance Manoah might be traded, and maaaaybe Kikuchi if the Jays did acquire another SP to fill the void
Dylan Cease's mustache is better than Strider's
7:34
You're Chris Getz. Who are you realistically getting back for Cease in a trade with LAD?
Mark P
7:36
One of Rushing/Cartaya makes sense, as I noted in the post.  Having two quality catching prospects makes it likelier that LA might be willing to move one, plus obviously Will Smith is behind the plate through at least 2025.

One of Rushing/Cartaya, one of the non-Miller young pitchers, and maybe one more significant piece?

1-10. What is your level of surprise on the Nola signing?
Mark P
7:37
Since I had Nola going to St. Louis in the picks contest, probably a 6.5 on my end.  The earlier gap in contract talks led me to lean away from a reunion between Philly and Nola, but I underestimated how badly the Phillies wanted him back, and how Dombrowski tends to splurge on players he really wants to retain

wtf is AA doing??? traded away half our depth for a tiny bit of payroll space. is he planning to go all out and sign multiple guys or what?
Mark P
7:39
"Half our depth" is a reach, since the Braves got rid of a lot of guys who seemed like obvious non-tenders anyway.  It is a little startling to see a club with only 30 of 40 spots on the roster filled, yet knowing Anthopoulos, he's going to be very aggressive.  I can see Atlanta making one bigger-tier acquisition (i.e. signing someone like Gray) and then a lot of smaller moves to bolster depth all around
7:40
Keep in mind that AA tends to make his winter moves earlier in the offseason, unlike a lot of executives.  So if he had something big planned, it could happen soon (though hopefully not during this chat, I'd hate to cut things short)
Mr Curiosity
7:40
Is the market going to wait on Ohtani to sign or will some big names sign before him?
Mark P
7:40
We already had one big name gone in Nola, though he was admittedly a bit of a special case since he re-signed with his old team
Kyle D
7:41
What team is Juan Soto on and does he sign a long term extension before free agency?
Mark P
7:42
Unless a new team is willing to drop at least $450MM right now, there's no way Soto is taking an extension before testing free agency.
Rockvember?
7:43
Could quantrill be flipped midseason if all goes well? Someone always wants league average innings at the deadline
Mark P
7:43
Sure, that's a possibility.
7:44
Unless the Rockies are in contention, that is.
Adam

We in Canada are hearing the Blue Jays are interested in Michael A. Taylor. How much of an upgrade would he be over Kevin Kiermaier, if at all?
Mark P
7:45
They're pretty similar players, except Kiermaier has been a bit better hitter over his career and Taylor has been more durable.  From a defensive perspective, there's very little gap, so Taylor would make a perfectly solid replacement.

However, the Jays already have an excellent center fielder with questionable batting ability in Varsho.  So signing Taylor doesn't seem like an ideal fit, when adding a bigger bat in left field makes more sense
Let's see if you answer this one

Where is the link to everyone's Free Agent Tracker Competition entries so we can see how we are doing?
Mark P
7:46
It should be posted sometime this week

7:46
Who do you think the Braves will sign, Snell or Gray?
Mark P
7:47
Of the two, Gray seems a lot more likely.  He'll cost much less, and the Braves tend to avoid Scott Boras clients like Snell
Magoo
7:48
Where do you think Tim Anderson might fit in and do you think he’ll have to settle for a one year contract?
Mark P
7:49
I'd think Anderson himself would prefer a one-year deal, so he can theoretically have a good season in 2024 and then set himself up for a bigger long-term contract next winter.
7:50
As to possible landing spots...the Dodgers, Giants, Angels, Red Sox, Marlins, Blue Jays, maybe the Padres all make sense off the top of my head.  Anderson's willingness to play second base opens up his market quite a bit
OC Angels
7:51
Zero chance we trade Trout to the Dodgers, right?
Mark P
7:52
I find it hard to believe the Angels would deal Trout to their archrival, especially given the bad blood Moreno has had for the Dodgers in the past
David
7:53
Read an article the other day that the Yankees should consider trading Cole to restock the farm. Wouldn’t that just be going backwards considering they already have limited proven starting pitchers?
Mark P
7:53
There is roughly a 0.0 percent chance the Yankees trade Cole
Mike
7:53
Sonny Gray to the Mets possible?
