Mark P

The Weekend Chat was on hiatus last week due to the flood of roster moves, but we're back to open up the proverbial mailbag.  Let's get to some questions!
Vaughn's Worried Mother
6:52
Will Vaugh Grissom be in the Braves org on OD of 2024?
Mark P
6:54
I believe so, since I think in lieu of a trade opportunity, Atlanta might just give Grissom a shot at the left field job.

It's also worth noting that the Braves had a great run of health with their position players last season, so keeping Grissom is a good guard against the injury bug reappearing
Baseball Girl
6:55
Atkins has to be aiming higher than Dylan Carlson no?
Mark P
6:55
My suspicion is that Carlson probably isn't the top name on the Blue Jays' wishlist from the STL organization, but he might be one of the more feasible names to be acquired.  The Cards will naturally be asking for a lot more for guys like Nootbaar or Donovan, whereas Carlson's asking price will be lower
The real Mark P
6:56
Will the youthful roster of the Orioles regress? And if so, how much?
Mark P
6:57
They might not necessarily win 101 games again, but in the sense that they'll "only" win 95 or so.  I'm firmly in the camp of Baltimore being for real, and even if a couple of the young guys regress, that doesn't mean others wouldn't pick up the slack by getting better.
Gators Fan
6:57
Where’s Jonathan India going?
Mark P
6:58
My guess is Seattle, based solely on the fact that the M's and Reds have lined up on some notable moves in the recent past.
Steve not Adams
6:59
Are the Red Sox a realistic place to see Yamamoto or Ohtani land? They just haven't shown the willingness to make the financial commitments for these 2 over the past few seasons.
Mark P
6:59
In fairness, Boston did sign Devers to a monster extension, so it's not like they forgot how to spend big.  I don't see Ohtani or Yamamoto landing with the Sox, but I do think they'll open the wallet for at least one prominent signing, to kickstart the Breslow era
Othani
7:00
I read that I could sign a shorter deal with higher AAV and an opt outs
Mark P
7:01
It's possible, if Ohtani wants the flexibility to re-enter the market after a full two-way season, without a TJ surgery hanging over him.
Icemanchills
7:02
Will the Yankees/Mets be in on Shota Imanaga
Mark P
7:03
To some extent, yes.  We haven't heard a ton about specific teams in on Imanaga besides Boston, but it can be assumed that several clubs have scouted him and have him on the radar
RaisetheJollyRancherGirl
7:03
Think the Pirates could sign Imanaga, Erod or Paxton this offseason? Rhys Hoskins?
Mark P
7:05
Hoskins and Paxton are more realistic than the other two, since I'm not sure the Bucs are quite ready to make quite the financial splash necessarily to land the other two
Tim
7:05
Hader or Chapman to the cards make any sense?
Mark P
7:06
I'm assuming you mean Aroldis and not Matt Chapman?  Either way, Hader might be a bit of a splurge, and Chapman is more realistic from a financial sense but maybe not a baseball sense.  I'm probably more down on Chapman than most, but I see him landing with another non-contender or borderline contender
Dre
7:07
They Tigers seem like a good fit for Justin Turner, right? They have an opening at third that will be filled by the end of the season and Turner is a good stopgap until then. He’s still significantly better than McKinstry and Keith and JHM. He would be a great mentor once they do make it and could turn into a platoon/DH.
Mark P
7:07
It's a nice fit on paper, though Turner is a nice fit for plenty of teams.  My guess is that Turner will sign with a team who offers him a clearer chance to contend in 2024
Tim
7:08
David Ross prediction. I think he could end up with the Brewers
Mark P
7:08
This would be a delightful outcome, I'd be all for it!
Lloyd Braun
7:09
I feel that baseball needs a free agency frenzy like the other 3 major sports. Control the headlines until Christmas. Who do I contact re this idea?
Mark P
7:09
Insanity later, Lloyd....as in, spreading the free agent insanity over the course of an offseason, rather than compacting everything into a single hectic week like the other sports
Ohtani watch
7:10
Who's a dark horse candidate for Ohtani that no one would expect?
Mark P
7:12
Given the size of Ohtani's next contract, it's hard to find a true dark horse since only so many teams can reasonably offer a $500MM deal.  So while clubs like the Rays, Diamondbacks, or Orioles could suddenly jump into the market if they change how they operate financially, that's a pretty big if to realistically contemplate
Jon, but not India
7:13
With Votto unlikely to be a Red in 2024 and young, self-appointed leader India quite possibly on the trade block, does Krall acquire a veteran position player to serve as clubhouse leader (like Rolen did from 2009-2012)? If so, any potential names?
Mark P
7:13
The fact that the Reds apparently have some interest in Jeimer Candelario really caught my attention

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/11/d-backs-reds-angels-interested-...
7:14
Could be due diligence, or maybe the Reds are thinking of a real blockbuster move of dealing two of their good young position players?
FALVEY
7:14
since I am not spending much who should I go after in free agency?
Mark P
7:15
The Twins are likely going to be a lot more active in trades than in free agency.  If they do dip into the open market, it'll be for players willing to sign shorter-term deals.  No Correa-type contracts this winter.
Harry
7:16
Not an off-season question, but why don't we ever see holdouts/contract disputes in MLB like we do in the NFL?
Mark P
7:17
Two entirely different sets of financial and contractual rules, and there's much less guaranteed money available to football players
Ton
7:18
With Eduardo Rodriguez not having any locational preferences this winter, why didn’t he want to move to LA at the deadline? Didn’t want to move his family mid season?
Mark P
7:18
Possibly.  Or, it could be that he does have a geographical preference, but doesn't want to publicly broadcast it so he isn't limiting his market

7:19
Chances Brewers package a prospect with Yelich to deal him.
Mark P
7:20
It would have to be quite a prospect to get a team to eat a bigger chunk of Yelich's contract, and moving such a prospect would seem to run counter to Milwaukee's plans if they did decide to rebuild, semi-rebuild, etc.

Did you make your free agent picks?
Mark P
7:21
I did!  Sat down last night and filled out my list, then immediately made about 10 revisions.

You can still enter the top 50 free agent picks contest, here's the link:
