Do you think Bryce Harper will stay at 1B for next season??
Mark P
6:44
Maybe not necessarily full-time, but having Harper/Castellanos/Schwarber in a rotation of DH and the two corner OF spots works, and Harper playing some 1B would allow for others to either get a DH day or to get a start in the outfield.
In short, it gives the Phillies some nice flexibility

What are the chances the Giants hire BoMel and what would your thoughts be on that hire?
Mark P
6:45
I think there's a very high percentage Melvin gets the job.  Can't see the Giants going quite this far down the road if they weren't already pretty sure of him as the choice, and likewise, the Padres aren't going to let their manager interview with another team (especially a division rival) on a whim
6:46
And Melvin is a very good manager, so I can see it working well for the Giants.

Why is aj preller still employed?
AJ Prellar
6:47
Did I just play 5-D chess in finding an acceptable way to get rid of Melvin?  am I actually going to get another chance to pick a manager? And who would actually take this job??
Fire Preller
6:47
With it looking like Melvin is leaving the Padres, how does Preller get to hire a 5th manager?  Preller seems like he was the issue more than Melvin was
Mark P
6:48
AJP's track record isn't great, though the trip to the NLCS (just last season, don't forget) might've bought him some extra time.

But obviously, there's a lot of extra pressure going on Preller in 2024.  Anything short of a playoff berth, and I have to imagine that even Seidler might be thinking it's time for a change in the PBO office

Given Seattle’s pitching depth and offensive needs, they seem to match up well with Baltimore. What would it take from the Orioles to pry one of Bryan Woo or Bryce Miller away?
Mark P
6:51
Not one of the upper-tier guys like Holliday obviously, but the Orioles have plenty of excellent prospects on the cusp of the majors (or have already been in the majors) that the M's could deem acceptable in such a trade.

It would take a lot for the Mariners to move a controllable young arm like Woo/Miller, but for a position player with equal control?  I agree, Seattle and Baltimore are a good trade match on paper

What’s the biggest splash you see the cardinals making this offseason in an attempt to get back to contention?
Mark P
6:52
I think they're going to sign one of the big free agent pitchers.  Not Ohtani/Yamamoto, but one of Nola or Gray seem quite feasible.
Maybe even Montgomery, assuming no hard feelings on his end

What is plan B for the Mets if Counsell is not available?

Bobby Valentine in another disguise

Where will Kim Ng be in 2024?
Mark P
6:55
At this juncture in the offseason, it's hard to say.  Boston has the only front office vacancy but she reportedly isn't interested in that job, so she might take a year or so to see if any other PBO/GM jobs emerge by the end of the 2024 season

Kim Ng to White Sox chances?
Mark P
6:56
It would be pretty weird to see the Sox hire Getz to run baseball operations, then immediately demote him to a No. 2 role under Ng.

Mark:Good Evening. What Is your initial thought on who the Marlins will go with to replace Ng?
Mark P
7:00
One would imagine that Sherman has had someone already in mind, so it is a possible a new hire might some relatively quickly.

But, speaking of front office pressure, there's now naturally a lot of pressure on this incoming executive right away.  Miami was a playoff team with a good core of talent.

Besides the obvious choice who signs the biggest FA contract? How much has the obvious choice’s contract changed since the beginning of the season?
Mark P
7:03
Ohtani is maybe the one player for whom a Tommy John surgery doesn't overtly change his free agent market.
I'm increasingly thinking that Yamamoto gets the second-biggest deal of the offseason.  Either him or Bellinger.

7:05
Chaim Bloom to Miami?
Mark P
7:05
This seems like an interesting possibility.  If Bloom wanted to jump right back into running another team, the Marlins seems like a nice fit on paper
Matt
7:06
What do you think AA has planned for the Braves this offseason?
Mark P
7:07
At least one big trade that comes completely out of the blue, and my guess is that Morton stays for one more (final?) season
This was mentioned by an Atlanta beat writer recently, but the Braves might also look to somewhat overhaul their bullpen.  Not that the pen was bad last year, but they were quite low on velocity, so Anthopoulos might try to find a couple of hard-throwers
Patrick

If Mariners wanted Walker from the Cardinals.. what gets that done?
Mark P

Gilbert or Kirby

Pirates sign Hoskins…
Mark P
7:10
Pittsburgh makes a ton of sense as a Hoskins candidate.  The Bucs need a first baseman but probably not on more than a one-year deal, and Hoskins will likely be looking for a one-year contract to re-establish his value.
7:11
Hoskins will probably be getting attention from a number of teams despite his lost 2023 season, so if it turns into something of a bidding war, Pittsburgh might be in trouble.  But if the money is all relatively equal, Hoskins will prioritize a team that gives him the best chance at that platform year.
7:12
However, Hoskins might prefer a team with a clearer chance to contend in 2024, and he might not like the idea of joining a new club and then quite possibly being traded to yet another new team at the deadline
Mark P
7:13
Who won the trade? Astros getting Yordan Alvarez or Dodgers getting Josh Fields ?
Mark P
7:14
Josh Fields had a 2.61 ERA over his 117 1/3 innings with the Dodgers.  Uh, but however....
