Just before Game 1 of the ALCS gets underway, let's kick off the Weekend Chat.  We'll start up once a few questions get built up in the queue....

Glasnow seems like an obvious trade candidate; could a team like Cincinnati be in the market for him?
Mark P
7:09
He's make a lot of sense for the Reds given their pitching needs, though Glasnow is only under contract through 2024.  Cincinnati therefore isn't going to give up one of their notable young players for just one season of Glasnow.  That said, it's possible a larger multi-player deal between the Rays and Reds could be swung
Twins
7:10
Sonny Gray staying with the twins? Moving to Cards? Or a contender?
Mark P
7:11
Odds of Gray re-signing seem pretty slim, since I don't think the Twins are going to meet his asking price.

seems to me Giants job isn’t too desirable. Not really a foundation of talent in place. No real success since 2014 except for flunk year. Do you think they find a manager before free agency?
Mark P
7:13
Sure, they'll hire someone.  And I'm not sure the job is "undesirable" at all, considering that the Giants have plenty to spend and an increased eagerness to land some premium talent

7:14
How likely is it that Cease gets dealt this offseason? I think the Cardinals match up well with the White Sox for a potential trade
Mark P
7:16
The White Sox seem to want to contend, or at least try to get back to being somewhat competitive.  With that in mind, I'm guessing they don't move Cease unless they get an over-the-top offer from another team
It isn't really in the Cards' nature to make such offers, as much as they need starting pitching

What names are you hearing for Mets manager?  Will they get rid of all of the coaches?
Mark P
7:18
There have been suspiciously few rumors about the Mets' managerial search, which makes me think they're indeed just running out the clock on Counsell's deal.
And whomever the new skipper is, I suspect they'll get the green light to bring in their own staff
Sox Talk
7:20
Lots of rumors about Denver’s moving to first base due to his defensive challenges. Do think they would move Casas for high end pitching? Would George Kirby be a legitimate target if it were Casas?
Mark P
7:21
Don't forget about the DH spot, so the Sox would be able to move Casas and Devers between DH and first base in the event that they did want to move Devers off third base.

Kirby for Casas would be a very interesting deal, and perhaps one of the few young star-for-star scenarios that would convince Seattle to actually party with Kirby.  If the M's do trade pitching this winter, they'll look to move just about every non-Castillo arm before considering trading Kirby
Dodgers blue
7:22
Can the Dodgers move on from Kershaw or are they obligated to sign him if he wants to pitch another year?
Mark P
7:23
"Obligated" is a tricky word, because technically they aren't....but unofficially, maybe they kinda are because he's a franchise icon, to say nothing of the fact that Kershaw still pitched well last year when healthy, and LA badly need pitching

7:23
Mets signing any of the top 10 FA’s? If so who do you think? Stearns grabbing Kim as GM?
Mark P
7:24
Why would Kim go from running a front office to being a second-in-command?

And my guess is that Yamamoto ends up in New York.  Just a hunch, since they aren't going to sit out the free agent market entirely.

Astros going to have serious extension talks with Altuve this offseason? What would an extension look like?
Mark P
7:27
Altuve's deal is up after the 2024 season, and I can't imagine the Astros will let him leave.  He turns 34 next May, but since he's still playing so well, a five-year deal seems quite reasonable
7:28
An exact dollar figure is perhaps a little tricky to determine since it goes beyond market value.  Perhaps Altuve is willing to take a little bit less to help the club for payroll purposes, or perhaps the Astros are inclined to pay him a bit extra for "face of the franchise" reasons
‘24 Braves
7:29
What are some things the Braves can address in the offseason?
Mark P
7:31
Left field is the obvious (or basically only) position on the diamond to address.  I guess we can't rule out a surprise trade, since catcher wouldn't have seemed like a target area last winter except then they went and got Sean Murphy.

Starting pitching and bullpen also seem like areas of need to a certain degree, but if Morton's option is picked up, that more or less might solve the rotation right there.  The younger starter candidates might also be able to chip in in the bullpen

What would a Danny Jansen extension look like 5 75
Mark P
7:32
Wouldn't be that much, due to Jansen's injury history
John Schneider
7:32
Will I get fired as a scapegoat for the Berrios disaster?
Mark P
7:33
If the Jays were going to make a managerial change, you'd think it would've already happened.  I do think, however, that Schneider will be under a lot of heat if the Jays get off to a slow start next year
Brewers
7:34
You think we still trade Burns after the Woodruff injury? Also will we non-tender Woodruff?
Mark P
7:37
A non-tender would seem extreme, since then the Brewers lose one of their biggest assets for nothing...not even the draft pick compensation they would've gotten if Woodruff has left as a free agent next year.

There's a non-zero chance that the Brewers might take something of a step back in 2024, deciding to trade Burnes and then giving the young outfielders and Turang a year to see who steps up as a reliable starter.  It wouldn't be a rebuild or anything, but more of a semi-evaluation year than a full-on push to contend.  And, this tactic might not preclude contention anyway, if they get some immediate help in a Burnes trade and if some of the youngsters break out

Hunter Harvey to the Rangers for Justin Foscue....does this have the makings of a realized trade?
Mark P
7:40
As much as Texas needs bullpen help, they're probably likelier to just sign someone or make a lower-level trade, rather than deal a notable prospect like Foscue
Phillies 2023 Champs
7:42
Do you think that it is a good idea for Hoskins to come back and ruin the vibe the Phillies have right now?
Mark P
7:43
"Ruin" is maybe a bit strong.  Seems like he'd be a pinch-hitter at best rather than taking any big role.  Plus, if anything, I'd guess his teammates would be fired up seeing Hoskins make it all the way back to be part of the 2023 team.
Jays
7:44
Any Chance Chapman accepts a QO?   If not, it would seem highly unlikely Jays sign him long term.  Where do they go with openings at both 2nd and 3rd?  Unless someone unexpected is non- tendered, there is nothing on the free agent market worth looking at for those positions.   They have internal options but you have to believe that they prefer not to fill both openings internally.   Possible trade options?
Mark P
7:45
I don't see Chapman accepting the QO. He'll still get a very good multi-year offer this winter, and i can see Scott Boras working his magic and finding a contract with an opt-out after the first year or two, so Chapman could perhaps re-enter the market with a better platform year under his belt.
7:46
As I wrote in the Blue Jays outlook piece yesterday, my guess is that the Jays get an everyday player for either 2B/3B, and then hand the other position over to the in-house guys (Biggio, Schneider, and the rookies).

What's the market for Jordan Montgomery this offseason?  Do you think the Rangers will try to resign him?
