Hi everyone, we'll launch the chat after a couple more minutes, while some more questions roll into the queue
Chase

Magic 8 ball, Does it get better for reds fan? Can’t get any lower right
Mark P
7:40
The Greene extension was a good move, and the Reds' talks with Lodolo and Ashcraft are a further sign that the team already feels like they're turning the corner in their rebuild
BillMuellerLite
7:41
Red Sox really aren't too bad of a team. Given the terrible optics the front office has endured the last few years, do you see them going all in at the deadline if they're in a decent position?
Mark P
7:41
The Sox made some buys at the deadline last year despite only kinda being on the fringes of the race, so if they're close this year, they'll certainly add (if not "go all in" by dealing their top prospects, necessarily)
7:42
And you're right, the Sox aren't a bad team by any means.  If they weren't in this buzzsaw of an AL East, they'd get a lot more attention.

There's no way the A's last until 2027 in Oakland, right?
Mark P
7:42
The plan is to apparently move the team after the 2024 season, when their lease at the Coliseum is up.  Then the A's would play in the minor league ballpark in Las Vegas until their new stadium is ready in 2027.

Will Walker Buehler return to the dodgers pitching staff in 2023? Or will we not see him until 2024?
Mark P
7:44
Buehler had his TJ surgery in late August 2022, so it would be a tall order to see him return this season. Maybe if he rehabs enough to return as a reliever in late September or early October, and in the playoffs?  But that's the risk the Dodgers might not want to take, both for Buehler's own health and for the sake of a playoff roster spot

Time for phillies to look into long term deals with marsh and Stott?
Mark P
7:46
Seems like a solid idea, both are enjoying nice breakouts in the early going.  the Phillies have enough money on the books that they might want to enjoy the lower costs on Marsh and Stott for a bit longer, but obviously the franchise has the money and willingness to spend on an extension if they wish
WTF

sad A's fan here. well not a fan anymore..
Mark P

I don't blame you.  What a disappointing time for Oakland fans.  Hard to fathom seeing your local team just up and leave town, especially with the added insult of years of low payrolls and fire sales.

Pirates playing with confidence. Do you see them winning 80+ games?
Mark P
7:50
Are the Pirates going to have a winning season?

Yes (43.2% | 304 votes)

No (56.8% | 400 votes)

Total Votes: 704
My vote is yes, since while it's still early, I absolutely adore the narrative of Andrew McCutchen returning to help the young Pirates turn the corner as a franchise.

What would it take for the redsox to acquire Eduardo Rodriguez or another pretty decent starting pitcher?  I'm concerned about their depth with their injury riddled veterans.
Mark P
7:53
E-Rod has an opt-out after the 2023 season, and if he keeps pitching this well, he might indeed have interest in leaving his three years/$49MM on the table in search of a bigger deal.

For the Red Sox or another team interested in a trade, then, you have to factor in the possibility that E-Rod might just be a rental.  That naturally impacts what Boston would be willing to give up in a deal, and it'll hurt the Tigers' chances of getting a real premium return
Las Vegas As
7:54
friend of a friend who works in MLB tells me the As will change name to Aces. Have you heard this anywhere?
Mark P
7:54
Nothing concrete about a name change, but frankly, I hope they remain the Athletics.  That name has lasted with the franchise since 1901, from Philadelphia to KC to Oakland and now apparently to Vegas

Allen looked great in his debut for the Guards! Can’t wait to see a rotation with him, Bieber, McKenzie, Bibee, & Williams! The future is bright in Cleveland!
Mark P

Death, taxes, and the Guardians developing good young pitching

What should the Royals expect to get at the trade deadline ?
Mark P
7:57
Prospects, since the team is already in such a deep hole that it's hard to see them rebounding enough to get into contention.
TStats
7:57
What do you think about the reds suddenly trying to spend
Mark P
7:58
They have so little on the books that it makes perfect sense to extend Greene, and perhaps any other youngsters they feel will definitely be core pieces going forward
Bud
7:59
Regardless of extension talks from ownership, SHOULD the Giants extend Farhan when he’s in his sixth season and besides a fluke 2021 season, only has a roster of second-hand bench players in the bigs and a 17th ranked farm system to show for it? Is that acceptable for the 5th most valuable franchise in baseball? Seems like they’d be better off hiring Peter Bendix away from TB if they can.
Mark P
8:02
Greg Johnson, the team chairman, was pretty adamant in his support of Zaidi prior to Opening Day.  But naturally, things could change if the Giants really struggle badly in 2023.

It's a tough situation to evaluate, since your observations about the farm system are spot-on (with the caveat of the canceled 2020 minor league system, but that impacted every other team as well as the Giants).
"Just hire someone from the Rays" isn't a magic formula for success, as well.
Philly A's
8:02
Dave Kaval already said they won't be changing the A's name.  "We've been around since 1901," team president Dave Kaval told ESPN's Jeff Passan. "Charter member of the American League"
Mark P
8:02
There you have it!
Billy
8:03
Now that Vegas is being taken do you think Oakland, Portland or Sacramento might get an expansion team?
Mark P
8:03
The Giants' territorial rights over most of the Bay Area would seem to exclude Oakland and possibly Sacramento, though I don't know the exact boundaries of "Giants territory"
8:04
Portland is a likelier possibility, since they're already often on the short list for expansion cities.  With Vegas being off the list and the Rays gaining momentum to stay in Tampa, it bodes well for Portland, Nashville, Montreal, maybe Charlotte, etc.
Daniel
8:05
If the Rangers continue this hot start all the way into July or August, could you see them making a move for a bat at the deadline?
Mark P
8:05
No doubt.  Texas has been so aggressive in free agency that they'll definitely be players at the deadline.

With O’Hoppe out do we trade for a catcher?
Mark P
8:06
Halos might need to do something drastic, yet naturally pickings are very slim on the catcher trade market
Alex
8:07
Who are the dodgers more likely to trade for? Bryan Reynolds or Tim Anderson?
