February is for groundhogs, Valentines, and (most importantly) the start of Spring Training.  What better way to kick off the month....uh, on February 5th....than with a baseball chat?!
Shohei Ohtani
7:28
エンジェルスが 5 月か 6 月に悪いスタートを切った場合、期限前にトレードできますか? This translates to “If the Angels are off to a bad start in May or June, could I get traded then, before the deadline?”
Mark P
7:29
The only way Ohtani is traded would be if he tells the team that he isn't re-signing in the offseason.  Otherwise, I don't think the Angels want to move a generational player before they absolutely have to
Feury

Does a Detmers, O'Hoppe, Quijada package from the Angels, get the Brewers attention for Corbin Burnes?
Mark P
7:30
Nope.  Milwaukee would want a lot more in any Burnes trade.

Plus, after getting Contreras, O'Hoppe has less appeal to the Brewers in particular
Leon
7:31
With the unfortunate Hendriks news, could the White Sox start a rebuild as their best player is now out for likely the season?
Mark P
7:33
With Robert, Jimenez, and Beintendi all locked up to long-term deals, I doubt you'll see the White Sox go into a total rebuild, even if they do struggle and aren't in contention at the deadline.  The ChiSox have enough money coming off the books next winter that there's a better chance they'd reload and try again in 2024, with a somewhat shaken-up roster
Marcelo Rodrigues
7:33
Is there a possibility for the Guardians to acquire Michael Wacha?
Mark P
7:34
I don't think he's far out of Cleveland's price range, but the Guardians don't really need him.  They might justifiably feel that at least one of Civale or Plesac can perform better than Wacha will in 2023, plus the Guardians have all kinds of young arms on the verge of the majors
Buster Bluth

Who do you see as the Red Sox opening day SS?

Enrique Hernandez

Thoughts on the Beltran hire? Seems like it's time for a second chance to me.
Mark P
7:37
It was inevitable that Beltran would get another job sooner rather than later, especially since Hinch and Cora were both back managing within a year.

Really starting to wonder why the market is so silent on Chafin. Am I just impatient, or is it possible nobody is offering two years...? He's holding out for a midwest team close to home...?
Mark P
7:38
Chafin, Moore, and Britton are all in position to command different levels of contract, but I believe Ken Rosenthal's report that the Matt Strahm deal threw off the market for LH relievers.  It might've led to something of a game of chicken between the three of them, with each hoping one of the others signs first

the Orioles will regret not accepting a 5 year extension at Camden Yards
Mark P
7:41
I would assume the O's wouldn't have passed on the extension if they weren't pretty confident about getting a longer-term deal done in the near future.  After all, the lease at Camden is up after 2023, so there isn't much time to spare.

That said, it is also possible the two sides can negotiate a shorter-term extension of two years or so, in order to kick the can down the road if they aren't quite there yet on a longer-term deal.  The O's already did this a few years back.

A's have traded away a huge amount of players and so far only 2 legit prospects out of all the trades.  Is the A's GM one of the worst in MLB now that Beane is no longer part of management?
Mark P
7:42
It is way too early to start passing judgement on the Athletics' various trades.

What would extensions for Witt Jr., Singer and Pasquantino would look like? Which do you view as most likely? Pasquantino seems like the easiest to me at 25 years old. I think he’d sign for something like 8 yrs $70m

I agree that Pasquantino would be the "easiest" to sign.  Not a high draft pick, didn't get a big bonus, and he might look to lock in a big payday as soon as possible.  That said, the Royals also might feel the least secure about giving VP an extension, given that being a first-base only player limits his overall value

Kepler staying or going?  If going, where to?  What's the expected type of return?
Mark P
7:47
according to the latest reports, he's staying.
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/02/twins-appear-unlikely-to-trade-...
Now, that could be some gamesmanship on the Twins' part, floating that idea out there to try and spur at least one team into improving their trade offer.
7:48
But, it could be that the Twins also want to keep their outfielders, since for all their depth, there are a lot of unproven commodities on the roster, plus Buxton is always an injury risk

Seeing more Rays extensions than normal, is this a potential change of front office direction (more like Braves are doing) or is just right timing for the team?
Mark P
7:50
This was actually just addressed in the "Rays Notes" piece on MLBTR earlier tonight.  It seemed like a combination of the Rays having some extra money available since they didn't add much in the offseason, the fact that they like all the players extended, and perhaps a bigger-picture idea of cutting down on the constant roster churn.

are you surprised to see Bryan Reynolds still a Pirate?
Mark P
7:51
Given how the Pirates were asking for a fortune in a trade, not too surprised.
Joe Mauer
7:51
Will I be elected into the HOF within the next 15 years?
Mark P
7:51
Certainly.  I don't think Mauer is first-ballot, but he'll be eventually voted in by the writers

Favorite baseball video game?

The old Ken Griffey Jr. game for the Super NES

(I am really dating myself with this answer :)  But, it's a legendary game!)
Angels SS
7:53
Why do the Angels think they don't need a real SS? Elvis Andrus rumors sounded positive.
Mark P
7:53
Between Rengifo, Fletcher, Urshela on occasion, and Velazquez for pure defense, the Angels might want to sift through the SS options they have before deciding on someone else

Hello Mark! Mariners fan here. I know it would be a long shot, but do you see them as a possible dark horse to sign Ohtani next offseason?
Mark P
7:56
It's not totally out of the question.  Seattle was one of the finalists for Ohtani when he initially came over from NPB, and according to some reports Ohtani prefers to stay on the West Coast.

If you want to look big picture, maybe the reason the Mariners spent relatively little this winter is because they're preparing to make the big splurge for Ohtani next year

Why wait for trades and signings to have a chance to grow and develop? Isn't it more fun to cry "Doom and Gloom!" and wallow in the knowledge that the baseball world is, in fact, ending?
Mark P

And I for one welcome our new insect overlords!

Can Verlander have another Cy Young type season or did we start to see his downfall late in the season/postseason?
