The Weekend Chat is upon us! Let's check into the mailbag....
Well, the virtual mailbag.  You know what I mean!
Angels
7:22
Will we sign someone before spring training?
Mark P
7:23
Yes, in terms of minor league deals.  But since I suspect you're asking about bigger-ticket moves....maybe, since the Angels are reportedly one of the clubs looking to add lefty relief
Mariners
7:23
Are we a playoff team with this roster or should we make one more move?
Mark P
7:24
I'd like to see them add another bat, but as presently constituted, I still see them as a playoff club
Enrique
7:24
Will the Red Sox or the Orioles have a better record this year?
Mark P
7:24
Who has the better record in 2023?

Orioles (74.8% | 1,396 votes)

Red Sox (25.2% | 470 votes)

Total Votes: 1,866

When is our payroll going to get the Blitzer effect? Does he splash in and lock down some of the young guns aka Bieber, Mackenzie, Gimenez, Kwan, and Karinchak? Or will the Dolan price live on in Cleveland for the extended future?  He sure spends it in Philly with the 76ers, should guards fans expect the same?
Mark P
7:25
It probably doesn't happen unless Blitzer takes full control of the team, which wouldn't happen until 2028 at the earliest
John
7:26
With so much depth at infield and maybe a better idea of guys like westburg and Ortiz’s potential, would it be wise for the Orioles to trade Jackson Holliday while he still has 1:1 value?
Mark P
7:27
There is probably some sentiment within the O's front office that Holliday is the best of those prospects since, you know, he was the first overall pick.  Baltimore isn't likely to trade from its true upper tier of prospects at this stage, since they don't want to err by moving someone who might yet break out into being a star
Ryan James
7:27
Will the angels be able to add another starter AND reliever or do you think it'll just be one or the other? They've got about 14 million until the tax threshold.
Mark P
7:28
In theory, squeaking over the tax line shouldn't be a problem for an Angels team that is desperate to contend.  Despite public statements, I'll believe that they're actually willing to cross the threshold when it happens, just because Moreno hasn't paid the tax in almost 20 years

great to see Tampa extending players. Who’s next?
Mark P
7:30
Technically Yandy is "next" since his deal isn't yet official.  But to provide a less-picky answer, any of the other arb hearing guys (Adam, Thompson, Ramirez, Poche) make sense. It would be fun to see Tampa try and lock up a top prospect like Mead to a pre-career extension.
John
7:32
Does a Grienke reunion make sense with Arizona? An experienced pitcher in Grienke could help the younger players, not just pitchers, and be a nice addition to the bullpen or rotation.
Mark P
7:32
Signing Davies probably closed the door on a Greinke return, since the D'Backs want to leave one rotation spot for their younger guys to compete over

Can you help me figure out what the Tigers are doing?  The offseason started off great with the hire of Harris and many other (potentially) great front office and coaching hires. Here we are, months later, without a GM and next to nothing done to  make this team better.
Mark P
7:35
It never felt like Harris was going to make any huge moves this winter, in part because the Tigers are tough to properly evaluate after a season where everything went wrong.  Are they a good team who just had a nightmare year, or a mediocre team that needs more roster work?  Harris playing wait-and-see for his first offseason is a reasonable strategy, and larger moves might come during the season (or at the deadline)

Is Buster Posey a first ballot HOF?
Mark P
7:36
Yeah, he's going to pretty easily get 75%

How significant is the news that Bally Regional Sports Networks restructuring their debt or possibly going bankrupt? Is this an opportunity for MLB to take over all broadcast streaming services?  Are the big contracts signed between players and clubs vulnerable? Are some MLB clubs at risk of going bankrupt?
Mark P
7:37
I believe salary money is in escrow, to protect against teams not being able to pay players.  No teams will actually go bankrupt, but the Bally situation is certainly a major concern for almost half the league.  At least a few of the teams have their TV deals up in the next year or two, however, so they might not be impacted too severely.

Any reaction to the Rockies’ owner criticizing the Padres for spending?
Mark P
7:39
I was more shocked by Monfort's feeling that the Rockies would be a .500 team.  By Monfort's standards, that's like another owner predicting their team to finish in last place.

7:39
Is Britton going to get an MLB deal or does he settle for a minor league contract?
Mark P
7:40
There's enough interest for Britton to still land a big league deal
Ryan
7:40
Odds that Juan Soto goes back to the Nationals in 2 years?
Mark P
7:41
Pretty small.  Given the ownership questions, the Nats don't seem in position to be giving out a $400MM contract any time soon
Erik
7:42
Any thoughts on what you’re hearing in regards to Trevor Bauer. I have to imagine someone offers him a contract. Not saying he should or shouldn’t get a deal.
Mark P
7:43
No public buzz on teams interested in Bauer, and likely a big chunk of the league isn't interested whatsoever.

Diamondbacks are World Series champions in 2023. Who says no?

Do you think the Blue Jays will eventually extend... or walk away from Bo Bichette? Or...does it depend on Chapman and Guerrero?
Mark P
7:45
My suspicion is that the Jays don't extend Bichette, and that Vlad is the likeliest of that trio to land a long-term contract.
Kevin
7:45
Odds that Soto goes  to the Cards in two years?
Mark P
7:46
Again pretty slim, because a huge free agent signing to the level of a Soto deal isn't the Cardinals' style
Scott
7:46
Do you think the Braves starting shortstop on opening day is currently in the organization?
Mark P
7:47
Yes.  I think they're going to roll with Grissom (and Arcia as backup), and then possibly pivot with an in-season trade if things aren't working out
