Happy New Year to those of us on this side of the world, and to those where it's already 2023....how's the year going?  While we gather information on the Y2K3 virus, let's dig into some baseball questions

Do you think the Padres will trade Kim and if so what could they get for him?
Mark P
7:16
My guess is that San Diego keeps Kim, even if a trade might add a little breathing room for the luxury tax.  The Padres would probably be wise to keep as much depth as possible given how Tatis is a bit of an unknown factor

Should I trade DeJong, Herrera, and Liberatore to the Sox for Sale and some cash?
Mark P
7:18
I'd be hesitant to give up anything of value for a pitcher with Sale's injury history.  If St. Louis was willing to move very good prospects like Herrera or Liberatore, they'd want more of a sure thing

Assuming the Correa deal works itself out one way or the other, there's no way Uncle Steve makes any more moves, right???  Is there anyone out there you can see the Metropolitans pursuing???
Mark P
7:19
Assuming Steve Cohen is ever "done" making moves seems like a mistake

two parter, Likelihood of Alek Thomas getting moved? What would be a potential return if he does?
Mark P
7:20
I doubt Thomas is moved.  The D'Backs seemed like they were always only going to deal one of their outfielders, and Varsho ended up the odd man out.  With Gurriel only signed through 2023 and Lewis something of an x-factor due to his injuries, the Diamondbacks probably want to keep Thomas around
7:21
Also, I almost feel like Thomas is being written off after just one season in the majors.  He's not even 23 yet, and was a consensus top-40 prospect.

Are the Giants done ?
Mark P
7:23
No.  I can see them pivoting to the trade market in search of one more bigger-ticket move, if obviously not something on the level of a Correa/Judge signing

Do you think the Yankees bring anyone in to be the left fielder or stay with what they have?
Mark P
7:25
Willie Calhoun and Billy McKinney on minor league deals shouldn't indicate the Yankees are done looking.  But, I can see a situation where they give Cabrera a long look as the regular left fielder, with Hicks getting some playing time in the hopes that he can rebound (or rebuild his trade value in any way).

In theory, the Yankees have enough lineup depth elsewhere that they could get by with LF as a relative weak link until closer to the trade deadline, when they can make a bigger upgrade
Bryan Reynolds Real Estate Agent
7:26
Hoping I am the chosen Reynolds question this week.  What team (or 2 teams) do you think should be most motivated to make a compelling offer?  I vote Rangers (seem all in elsewhere) and Yankees (huge hole in left field).
Mark P
7:27
I would suggest the Rays might be another interesting possibility

There are a few team that I see being on the verge of a fire sale depending on how the first half of the season goes. Do you see the White Sox, Angels and Twins blowing it up at the deadline?
Mark P
7:29
If the Angels have a new owner, I'm not sure that owner would want their first impression to be a fire sale that sends Ohtani and others elsewhere.

As for the Twins or White Sox, they seem like more realistic candidates to sell in a more significant fashion if things really went south

Trade proposal. 3 team trade. Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta. Atlanta sends Fried to Baltimore for Holliday and other prospects. Pittsburgh sends Reynolds to Atlanta for Grissom and prospect
Mark P
7:31
As much fun as this would be, I'm not sure adding Reynolds and losing Fried (and Grissom) is anything more than a lateral move for an Atlanta team that is trying to win now.  Losing Fried leaves a real hole in the rotation.

How valuable of a trade chip is the Mariners’ Comp A pick? Could they use it to sweeten a deal for Reynolds, Arozorena, or O’Neill and push the trade across the finish line?
Mark P
7:33
Given how Jerry Dipoto loves to make trades, that Comp A pick must be burning a hole in his pocket.  Especially since the Mariners have already gotten a bonus pick back for Rodriguez's ROY-winning campaign.
Go M's
7:33
The Mariners are reportedly looking for a right handed hittling LF with some pop, and based on their trend this offseason, they're looking for someone cheapish. Why not just keep Kyle Lewis around for that? I get he has an injury history and is no sure thing, but he's shown he can be productive, is young, and is cheap. It's not like we got a superb return for him to force our hand.
Mark P
7:34
The Mariners want that new bat to be a substantive upgrade over the options they currently have, and Lewis wasn't such an upgrade.  He's more of a question mark, and frankly, the fact that the M's were willing to part ways with him is perhaps a red flag about his health.

Does Rafael severs get moved before the season startei
Mark P
7:37
"Rafael Severs" is an incredible name for the villain in a baseball-themed slasher movie

Anyway, I doubt Boston moves Severs Devers.  It might end up being a replay of the Bogaerts scenario, where the Sox let Devers play out the year and them let him walk in free agency.  In the Betts trade, financial factors (i.e. getting under the tax limit) were at play to make the Sox swing a trade more immediately

What is your favorite Spring Training ballpark?
Mark P
7:39
Having been to exactly two Spring Training ballparks, the Tigers' complex in Lakeland is really cool

7:41
Is Reynolds a better fit for a corner than for a team looking for a true CF?
Mark P
7:42
The public defensive metrics weren't keen on Reynolds in 2022, but at least OAA liked his work as recently as 2021.  He isn't exactly a Gold Glove threat out there, but since center field help is so hard to come by, a team in need will probably be fine with Reynolds as long as he continues to hit
Joshua
7:43
Would Lane Thomas be a sneaky trade candidate to teams looking for relatively inexpensive OF help? And if so, what type of return could he bring back the Nats?
Mark P
7:45
I think the Nats were certainly hoping Thomas would take a bigger step forward than he did in 2022, since then he'd have more value either as a trade chip, or as a cornerstone piece of their rebuild.  He has trade value as it is, but probably not for anything major.  If I'm the Nationals, I likely hang onto Thomas and hope it totally clicks for him in 2023
Matt Manning
7:45
Could Detroit get their long-term third baseman by trading Matt Manning?
Mark P
7:47
Manning would get plenty of attention if Detroit actually shopped him in trades. But, with some injury risk hanging over him, it wouldn't be an entirely premium return, so the Tigers likely don't want to risk selling low.

There's also the fact that Manning is still surely a big part of the Tigers' future plans, and is thus closer to being a longshot trade candidate
Orioles 2023
7:48
What are the orioles doing (I mean not doing) this off-season? Do they have that much confidence in their prospects to compete this year? Or are they marking 2024 as the year to return to relevancy and just seeing what they have in house?
Mark P
7:50
There's certainly an "ahead of schedule" vibe to the Orioles, since nobody expected them to have a winning season in 2022.  As such, the front office isn't going wild in assuming that the team is already a few pieces away from World Series contention....we've seen plenty of examples in the past where a team jumps the gun on trying to contend too early, and it sets the whole organization back.
7:52
There's also still plenty of time left for the Orioles to make additional moves, like trading from their prospect depth.  Given that depth, I can actually see why it might take a while for Baltimore to complete a trade --- everyone Mike Elias calls is probably all "sure, we'll take Gunnar Henderson or Grayson Rodriguez," and it takes a while to negotiate down to prospects the O's are more willing to actually trade
