Ho ho ho, merrrrrry weekend chat!  Let's take some questions before I put the milk and cookies out for Santa
Rick Hahn
8:02
Is my opening day 2B on the roster already?
Mark P
8:03
(Rick Hahn = White Sox GM)

Probably not, since as much as the Sox love Leury Garcia, neither he or Romy Gonzalez are ideal candidates for a regular share of at-bats
Aaron Boone
8:03
Who is my leftfielder?
Mark P
8:05
The Yankees are another team that doesn't seem done by any means, but at least with NYY, you can see how they could stay internal for left field choices.  Hicks and Cabrera, plus Stanton every once in a while, or Florial or Hermosillo down on the farm
The Yankees could use LF as something of a mix-and-match position, either giving Cabrera a chance to perhaps earn more at-bats, or for Hicks to perhaps hit well and improve his trade value

8:05
Does Cleveland make a move for Devers?
Mark P
8:07
I'm not sure the Red Sox want to further aggravate their fanbase by trading Devers so soon after Bogaerts' departure. It also isn't the Guardians' style to give up a significant prospect haul for one season of a player.  Besides all that, where does Devers play in Cleveland?  J-Ram is locked at third base, and now Naylor/Bell have first base and DH pretty well covered
Carlos Correa
8:07
Am I going to have to try and find a third team to play for the off-season?
Dk
8:07
Prediction on how this Correa saga ends with the Mets?
Cohen Tax for Christmas
8:07
What is the most likely outcome for Correa? Will he be a Met at the end of the day?
Mark P
8:09
This situation is so unusual that it's hard to predict an endgame, except it does seem likeliest that Correa does end up with the Mets.  If this deal were to also fall apart, you have to wonder what kind of market Correa would have left, given that other teams would have to be wondering what the heck is going on with him physically.
So for as much as the Mets seem committed to Correa at this point due to Cohen's public comments about the move, Correa and his camp are equally committed

What are the chances Jays still trade one of Jansen/Kirk for a SP after yesterdays trade ?
Mark P
8:10
Pretty remote.  I'm not sure they see Varsho as anything more than a once-in-a-while catcher, or even an emergency option (if they have Kirk and Jansen in the same lineup)

When will we see the trade market heat up?
Mark P
8:11
It already has, given that big D'Backs/Jays swap.  Most of the biggest free agents are already gone, and a lot of teams still have pressing needs.  That leaves trades as the next best option.

Do you see Baty traded or playing left field?
Mark P
8:13
Probably playing left field
Ethan
8:14
Do you think the dbacks are done this off-season? How do you rate the varsho trade? Is there another SP or RP or 3B that they can go after?
Mark P
8:15
I don't think they're done by any means, but their next moves will be less splashy. Trading an outfielder was the biggest arrow in the quiver for the D'Backs this winter, and now that they've made their capital-B Big trade, it'll be more lower-level additions
Guy
8:16
Will Ramon Laureano be traded?
Mark P
8:18
Quite possible.  Laureano isn't coming off a particularly good platform year, so the A's might wait and see if he rebuilds value before moving him around the deadline, for instance.  But as we've seen, Oakland is open to moving basically any veteran for the right price at any time.

8:18
Do you see ATL. making any trades to address LF, or do you think they will hope for a rebound contract year from Rosario?
Mark P
8:19
Knowing Anthopoulos' MO, I can see Atlanta rolling with Rosario (and Luplow and Hilliard) to begin the season, and then only pursuing a trade if this platoon mix isn't working out
Chip
8:20
Would Volpe, Pereira, and Schmidt be enough to get Reynolds?
Mark P
8:21
The Pirates are known to want a blue-chip pitching prospect in the trade, and I'm not sure Schmidt would qualify for them.

That said, including Volpe would certainly get Pittsburgh's attention and this package would probably be pretty close to enough.  However, the Yankees have been pretty adamant about not moving Volpe, so I doubt that stance changes now

mariners and Dipoto are going to waste Julio like LAA did Trout and Ohtani
Mark P
8:22
Technically, Rodriguez has already had infinitely more postseason success than Trout or Ohtani.  So, no worries!

Thoughts of blue jays trade
Mark P
8:24
Really interesting deal.  I was a little surprised that the D'Backs didn't add another player (even a minor leaguer or something) but perhaps that speaks to how relatively little trade value Gurriel had.
8:25
While not quite my Moreno-for-Carroll ideal for the Blue Jays, it was clear Arizona wasn't moving Carroll, so this was the next best option.  Varsho fills a lot of needs for the Jays, and it'll be fascinating to see how he develops as a player.  From Arizona's side, they get their catcher of the future and a solid veteran OF for at least a year, so it works nicely on their end as well
Extension for Nola
8:26
Now that the Phillies seem to have completed their roster…will they finally get an extension done for Aaron Nola?  Seems like Rodon is a pretty good comp.  They simply can’t let him get to free agency
Mark P
8:27
There's no doubt the Phillies will have some talks with Nola's reps, and extension news usually doesn't really start happening until Spring Training begins.  If I'm Nola and I'm a year away from free agency, I'd need to see an even bigger deal than Rodon's in order to keep me from testing the open market.
Damien
8:28
In a Bryan Reynolds trade, do the Pirates get more or less than the package the Diamondbacks received in the Varsho trade?
Mark P
8:28
More, since Reynolds is more established as an All-Star level player
Bill
8:28
Seems like Cleveland should be trading some of their excess upper minors depth, no? How many middle infielders can you have?
Mark P
8:30
If you're going to have a surplus at a position, middle infield is a good choice, since those are the kinds of players who can usually adjust to playing third base (not really an option in Cleveland) or the outfield.  The Guardians don't really "need" to make a trade, per se, and might even be comfortable just rolling with Rosario for one more year and then letting him walk in free agency.  That gives the Guards a good player in the lineup for a team that's trying to win, and it allows them more time to evaluate the group of younger MIs to find the replacement

Do players sign a contract with medical language in it and then have a physical OR do they do the physical before signing?
Mark P
8:32
I believe this differs from player to player, but in general, the physical takes place after the agreement (but before the "official" signing).

If it's a case where a player has a notable pre-existing condition, I believe a player can voluntarily submit more medical information or perhaps even take a proper physical.
