It's time for the Weekend Chat!  Let's see if we can sneak in some questions before the Mets spend another several million dollars....
WM
7:05
Biggest surprise of the Winter Meetings?
Mark P
7:06
Like everyone else, I sure didn't see Xander Bogaerts getting $280MM.  Prices in general were higher than expected, but Bogaerts getting that much was a real stunner
Ben Q
7:06
What the heck are the Brewers doing? Is resigning Woodruff or Burnes even realistic for them?
Mark P
7:07
Re-signing both doesn't seem feasible, but one is a possibility.  Willy Adames is the other name to consider, and I would lean toward doubting that Milwaukee extends/re-signs two of the Adames/Woodruff/Burnes trio
Darren
7:08
Do you see any way Cleveland could land Murphy without giving up one of their big 3 SP prospects?
Mark P
7:09
Since the A's are prioritizing MLB-ready players, then sure, if the Guards were willing to part with Kwan, Gimenez, or maybe either of the Naylors (which they're not).

Cleveland is deep enough in pitching that I could see them moving Bibee or maybe Williams in a Murphy deal.  Espino I'd imagine is off-limits in virtually any scenario.

7:10
Where does Bryan Reynolds wind up and what do the pirates get back in return?
Mark P
7:11
I actually still think he might stay in Pittsburgh until at least the trade deadline.  The Pirates are asking for a ton in any trade, and Reynolds' trade request isn't likely to get the Bucs to lower those demands in any way
Jacob
7:11
Would the Red Sox suddenly pivot to Swanson or Correa, or go boring and safe with a low cost option?
Mark P
7:12
Seems like a lower-cost option is much more of a realistic scenario
Or, not even a new option at all, and Story or Hernandez just plays shortstop

Is there a legitimate reason why the Giants continue to be a bridesmaid rather than bride with all these free agents?
Mark P
7:14
We don't know the specifics of the negotiations, so we don't know if the Giants are just falling short on money or years, or if their biggest targets are players who simply prefer to play elsewhere.  In Judge's case, if he really just wanted to stay in New York as long as the Yankees gave him an offer close to his market, there wasn't much the Giants could do without a drastic overpay

Do you see Ross Stripling as a fit for the SF Giants?
Mark P
7:15
Stripling would be a very good add for the Giants, sure

Greatest need for the Jays, another pitcher and who or left handed bat to replace Teo?
Mark P
7:16
Pitching is definitely the bigger need.  As much as the Jays could or should balance out the lineup with another lefty bat or two, right now they're going into 2023 with as many as three question marks (Berrios, Kikuchi, White) lined up for rotation duty

What are the chances the Diamondbacks don’t move any of the lefty outfielders?
Mark P
7:18
Less than 50-50.  Obviously the D'Backs aren't in any rush or under any real pressure to trade any of those players, so GM Mike Hazen won't make a trade unless he feels it's a smart move for his team.  That said, there is so much interest in the outfielders and Arizona has enough other needs that I suspect one team will eventually make the right offer
Daniel
7:19
Who says no? Sean Murphy for Wilmer Flores (DET), Izaac Pacheco, Wenceel Pérez and Reese Olson
Mark P
7:19
Oakland says no

Do you think teams are waiting for the rest of the big free agents to come off the board to start making big trades?
Mark P
7:22
We've already seen a good chunk of the FA market come off the board, including some of the biggest names.  So that might open things up a bit more on the trade front.

I forget who made this point in a recent article, so I apologize for the lack of proper credit.  But, the writer made the point that many front offices evaluate players in the same fashion these days, making trades a little more difficult.  As much, with teams more willing or able to spend money, front offices might prefer to just make additions in free agency rather than haggle over trades

Comparing shoulder injuries of Michael Brantley and Michael Comforto. Is one more serious than the other? Seems it is hard to gauge the market for either of them because of the injuries but many teams need left hand bats
Mark P
7:23
Teams have their own doctors reviewing the medical records, and it's possible some teams might think one player is a bigger risk than the other.  It isn't known publicly which injury is necessarily more serious.

Is something toxic happening with the culture of my team? It feels like no one wants to play for me.
Mark P
7:25
...uh, except Xander Bogaerts?

Hi Mark, in regards to remaining roster moves for the Cardinals, do they add anything else? Do we unload Paul Dejong? I know he has an expensive salary but are we really going to give him at bats over Donovan and Gorman?
Mark P
7:28
The Cards will definitely have some more moves in store, and since John Mozeliak generally prefers trades to big signings, it could be that they're one of the teams who will be more active once other clubs are done picking through the free agent market.

DeJong's contract isn't all that bad, considering 2023 is the last guaranteed year.  $11MM ($9MM salary, $2MM buyout) isn't light, but it's hardly the most onerous contract out there.  A "bad contract swap" certainly seems possible, or at least a deal where the Cards maybe pay a few million bucks.  DeJong is still a very good defensive player, don't forget.

Sean Murphy for Alek Thomas and Daulton Varsho. Who says no?
Mark P
7:29
I would think the A's accept that offer, but I doubt Arizona would give two of their young outfielders (even for Murphy)

Do one of the shortstops end up in Chicago?  They have to or else it's a failure for the Cubs given all the talk they've had about spending this offseason...
Mark P
7:31
The Cubs can improve their team without necessarily landing Correa or Swanson.  They still have Hoerner, so shortstop isn't as pressing a need for Chicago as it might be for another team.

What are the Braves supposedly lowballing/ letting Dansby walk? We don't have a proven SS on the roster and we're hoping Grissom or Shewmake produce at the level Dansby does. After seeing the Phils and Mets moves it feels like we've taken a huge step back this offseason
Mark P
7:33
The reported lack of contact between Swanson and the Braves is a little surprising, but it could be that the team is simply just willing to get him go.  Grissom could be the replacement, or maybe Atlanta gets a veteran stopgap type of player, or trades for another shortstop.

Or, because it's Alex Anthopoulos, he'll shock us all with some move that nobody saw coming

Any chance Steve Cohen stops spending for a few years? Team now has 240Mil committed to 10 players for 2024 BEFORE factoring McNeil and Alonso’s final arb years.
Mark P
7:35
Not likely

How much is the Orioles ownership drama playing into their willingness to spend? Gibson is a decent addition for the rotation, but they need Rodon or at least Bassitt to move forward.
