Max Verstappen is unbelievable but let's turn our attention to baseball and chat some ball ahead of today's games
Will get going in a couple mins
Dan
10:03
Are you worried about Manoah?
Simon Hampton
10:05
Yeah it's a weird one. Everything's trending in the wrong direction. Hard for me to sit here and say he's playing through an injury when I have no evidence of that, but the velo is down, walks up, strikeouts down, more home runs etc. Doesn't look great at the moment

Why do the Yankees call up catcher Ben Rortvedt to keep him on the bench and watch Higashioka play and struggle? Ben is a lefty bat with a higher upside and at Yankee Stadium could be better. Seems Boone just can't put together a lineup that makes sense.
Simon Hampton
10:06
Higashioka is also a lot more familiar with the pitching staff than Rortvedt, who'll almost certainly be optioned when Trevino is activated. The Yanks are pretty big on defensive catchers so I'm not surprised Higashioka is seeing the bulk of the playing time there

What can the Royals get for Champan, at the deadline then!!! We need real hitters, NOT someone that will be on the wavier next week like most of our trades seem to get these days
Simon Hampton
10:08
There is maybe not a surer trade candidate in the game right now than Aroldis Chapman, but how big will the return be? It's still a rental relief pitcher, and I don't think he's getting you a top-100 prospect

Cubs should seriously consider trading Marcus Stroman and Cody Bellinger at deadline yay or nay?
Simon Hampton
10:09
Cubs need to decide if they like Stroman long term. I think this team can find a way to be competitive pretty easily in the NL Central in 2024, so if they feel Stroman is a worthwhile investment the two sides should hammer out an extension, which appears to be what Stroman is wanting. If not, he's definitely a trade candidate, as he's not taking that $21MM player option and he can't receive a qualifying offer after receiving one from the Mets a few years back

10:10
What starters should the Yankees target
Simon Hampton
10:11
It's probably not what you want to hear but I think a boring, stable back of the rotation arm to give them some innings would fit. They've depleted the farm a fair bit in recent years and I think if they're going to go after an impact addition the prospect capital would be better spent in the lineup (left field)
Angels
10:12
When do we cut bait with Rendon?
Simon Hampton
10:14
Waaaaay too early for that. He's not having an awful season. I know he's not giving you what you want from a $38.5MM player but the contract is sunk at this point so as long as he's giving you positive production (.415 OBP!) then you continue to roll with him
Reds
10:15
Buying or selling at the deadline?
Simon Hampton
10:16
Selling, but if the right deal is there maybe they're open to adding some pieces they can control longer term. Not expecting it to be a hugely active deadline for the Reds - maybe they free up the infield a bit for their prospects by trading someone like Senzel
Wallflower
10:16
Shane Bieber traded at the deadline or not?
Simon Hampton
10:16
I think yes. Think I predicted he'd go to the Orioles recently and I'll stick with that
Mike
10:18
Will Ohtani be an Angel for the rest of the year? If not, where do you think he ends up?
Simon Hampton
10:18
Yes - and then elsewhere in free agency I think. Still got the Dodgers as the most likely.

What starting pitcher might the Giants acquire in a bad contract swap for Sean Manaea (assuming the Giants might have to eat part of Manaea's contract?
Simon Hampton
10:20
Josh Donaldson?
Scuffy mcgee
10:20
The dodgers need help on offense in the OF and ss. Who are some logical targets
Simon Hampton
10:20
Anderson is the big name that I could see them moving for at SS. Would cost a bit, but wouldn't deplete the farm. Like that fit a lot.
Zak
10:22
How long before the Reds call up Elly De La Cruz?
Simon Hampton
10:22
It surely can't be too long. Have to think it's coming in the next few weeks
Rangers Fan
10:22
Who are some relievers you could see the Rangers targeting in trades? I don’t imagine they will meet the asking price for guys like Diaz or Bednar
Simon Hampton
10:23
Doubt those guys are really available unless you blow the Pirates or Reds away. Expect guys like Chapman and Barlow to be on their radar
Tyler
10:23
How long before Pirates call up Henry Davis?
Simon Hampton
10:24
I think a stint at Triple-A is up next for Davis. They also seem to really like Austin Hedges and you're not calling up Davis to sit on the bench as a back up, so don't think they're in any great hurry there
Puig
10:24
Will Yasiel Puig ever play another MLB game?
Simon Hampton
10:24
No
Greg
10:26
Who goes first overall in this summers draft?
Simon Hampton
10:27
I don't any intel here but Crews really does seem like the real deal, so would go with him
Dave D
10:28
If Phillies are in 4th place come Aug 1, do they trade Nola and Kimbrel?
Simon Hampton
10:29
It all depends on what 4th place looks like. If theyre a couple games back in the WC standings I don't think they're taking a step back.

They're 1.5 games back now and have a lot more in them I think so I have to believe they're a long way from being sellers

Josh Donaldson is not a pitcher and the Giants are set at 3B with JD Davis and Schmitt (if he comes off SS).
Simon Hampton
10:31
Aware he's not a SP but the idea there is you're shedding a contract and freeing up the 2024 payroll (Donaldson a FA), and getting a quality defender at 3B and allowing Davis to bounce around a bit more.

Bad contract swaps are never going to be a perfect fit
Tom
10:32
Which team do you see being the first to make a major move, and by how much are they gonna overpay?
Simon Hampton
10:33
Could see the Mariners going after a bat
