MLBTR Chat: 3/22/23

Anthony Franco
5:58
Hey everyone, hope all is well!
5:59
Second chat of the day for me, let's get rolling
Jordan Montgomery
5:59
With another strong campaign, is there any chance I get over 100 mil?
Anthony Franco
6:01
He'll be 31 so it's not of the question on age that he narrowly beats $100MM over five years. I think he's more in the Taillon/Walker bucket that's like four for around $70MM but he's got a cleaner bill of health than those guys and a little more consistency so it's not crazy to push nine figures with another good year
6:02
Probably requires a strikeout rate closer to the 24-25% range he had in 2020-21 than the 22% clip he posted last year though
Dave
6:02
Hayden Wesneski is the _th best pitcher on the Cubs
Anthony Franco
6:04
I'd go fourth behind Taillon, Stroman and Steele right now but think it's in the realm of possibility he ends up as the best one in the group
Need more than six MLB outings before putting him above those guys though

Hey Anthony, thanks for the chat.  We loved the WBC in this household and we're excited for the next one in 3 years. The only thing that might seem awkward is the timing of it all, but is there really a better time to have it?  The games do give some psuedo-Spring run-up which seems preferable to a Winter tourney... what's your take?
Anthony Franco
6:06
Yeah I think March is the best time for it. I wouldn't want to interrupt the season every four years for it to go around the All-Star Break -- it'd probably require playing fewer than 162 games at that point -- and after the postseason doesn't work because guys are at different stages of their offseasons depending on whether their teams made the playoffs
Nic
6:06
Who is a player in MLB you like more than most people?
Anthony Franco
6:07
Guys I probably think are better than most people do: Ketel Marte, Griffin Canning to a lesser extent if he could ever stay healthy
6:08
Someone I just randomly like for no particular reason with no regard to performance: Ehire Adrianza
Edward Oliveras
6:08
My team has an unsettled roster. How much playing time can I expect?
Anthony Franco
6:09
Yeah I think the Royals are positioned to give Olivares decent run. MJ Melendez probably gets the bulk of the left field time but right field's wide open, especially with Kyle Isbel moving to center while Drew Waters is hurt
6:10
Olivares should get a chance to carve out an everyday role. He has some interesting tools, just TBD on whether he has a patient enough approach to tap into it consistently
Ricky
6:10
who closes for the Miami Marlins?
Anthony Franco
6:11
They've said they're going by committee early but I'd guess Dylan Floro if I had to pick a team saves leader
Anthony Cumia
6:11
Which team will have a better season, Mets or Yankees?
Anthony Franco
6:11
I like the Mets a little bit more
Brian Cashman
6:12
Which team makes the most sense for IKF?
Anthony Franco
6:13
I think he's just sticking on the Yankees in a utility capacity to open the year. Doesn't seem like any other team considers him a notable upgrade over their in-house shortstop
6:14
Or they're rebuilding and not rushing to trade for a rental, like Oakland or Cincinnati
Floyd
6:15
Are you surprised that Gary Sanchez has not signed with a MLB team? Where do you think he ends up?
Anthony Franco
6:16
Anyone who I thought could get a big league deal still being unsigned in late March is surprising, sure. I'm guessing he ends on a minor league contract at this point
Oakland would fit there with Pina hurt. Colorado should upgrade over Elias Díaz but it doesn't seem they're interested in doing so
Martras
6:16
How do you feel about the Twins making Buxton a primary DH instead of a CF?
Anthony Franco
6:17
As long as it's only early in the season to slowly ramp him up, I'm fine with it. Guessing he'll be back out there regularly by May
6:18
I wouldn't permanently DH him and don't think they have any plans to do so. He's the best defensive outfielder in the game for me and even with the number of excellent defenders they have besides him, a bat-only role isn't getting near the value he's capable of bringing
6:19
Besides, it's not as if all his injuries have come on defense. He's gotten hurt running the bases a couple times, got hit by a pitch once. Injury risk is still there even as a DH obviously
Joe
6:19
You’re a team looking to fill a hole at 3B. Would you rather A) trade a package for the remaining arb years of Luis Urias B) sign Matt Chapman to a mid-term deal or C) drop a bag on Bregman if he hits FA after next year?
Anthony Franco
6:20
If I'm trying to fill third base right now, can't wait two years for Bregman even if that's probably the best long-term bet. I'd rather roll the dice on an Urías trade than beat the free agent market on Chapman probably
Tyler
6:21
What is the upside for Brandon Marsh? Hit .288 after the trade and has one of the best hitting coaches in the bigs in Kevin Long. Could he be a 20/20 guy?
Anthony Franco
6:22
20-20 is the upper bound of what I'd find plausible for him. Wouldn't shock me if he gets there once or twice, don't think he's doing it every year though
6:24
Contact rate jumped seven percentage points after the trade. I'm cautiously optimistic about his finish but he's not going to hit .398 on balls in play over a full season so he'll have to build off the late-season uptick in contact to hit for a decent average
Rockies
6:24
Is Profar just trade bait?
Anthony Franco
6:25
I doubt they see it like that. They had questions in the outfield. Profar was the best player still available at a price that fell well below expectations and they want to get better, so they signed him
6:26
I do think he'll come up in trade talks this summer because he's on a one-year deal and the Rockies won't compete, but I doubt they're signing him with the hope of flipping him at the deadline
6:27
He also just lingered on the market for months because a bunch of teams with left field questions didn't consider him a clear enough upgrade over their in-house options to make him a free agent priority. That could be the case in July too, which may lead to a situation where the Rockies decide to hold him rather than take a trade offer they consider sub-par
