Good evening everyone! Let's discuss what remains of the offseason
Pitt fan
6:01
who plays 2B for Piittsburg?
Anthony Franco
6:02
Seems like Rodolfo Castro gets the first shot, though I imagine they'll mix in Ji-hwan Bae on occasion against RHP. Castro's not going to have a super firm hold on the job so Bae could certainly play his way into more consistent action

Should Texas finally decide to go out of the organization for a LF, and they definitely should, is there someone other than Kepler, Hays, Santander, or L Gurriel that might be available? In the same vain should they talk to Pittsburgh about Andujar? With regular AB he might still be moderately productive.
Anthony Franco
6:04
Andújar just went unclaimed on waivers. No one's all that interested in him. As far as other corner OF trade candidates besides the guys you mentioned (none of whom seem all that likely to go), could probably take a shot on Darin Ruf?
6:05
The trade possibilities for Spring Training are thin. There'll be more possibilities at the deadline but it doesn't seem like anyone super interesting is moving in the next six weeks

As unfortunate as this is, how does this situation with Nic Enright work? He was selected in the rule 5 draft, but with the diagnosis, he more than likely won't make the roster, so does he stay in Miami or go back to old team?
Goes without saying, but nothing but the best for Nic
Anthony Franco
6:06
I imagine he'll just go on the 60-day injured list (which you can do for Rule 5 draftees) while he recovers
Jerry Royster
6:07
Do you think if Marcel Ozuna has a lousy ST that the Braves would cut him before the season starts?
Anthony Franco
6:07
Feels like that would've already happened by now if they were considering it. Doubt they're making a decision like that based on Spring Training
6:08
Now if he's not hitting by mid-May and one of the other guys has seized the LF job, cutting him becomes more realistic

Did Cleveland do enough to still be the favorites in the Al central?
Anthony Franco
6:09
I think I'm prepared to overrate Minnesota for a third straight season but would have the Twins and Guardians 1-2 in some order, with Chicago a tier below them
Giants fan
6:10
I read a while back about Logan Webb and the Giants talking about an extension. 1. What do you think the extension would be? 2. How would it affect the Giants?
Anthony Franco
6:11
Curious to see if/how the Cristian Javier deal affects the market for starting pitchers in that 3-4 year service bucket. His camp did really well there. Not only did they break the guarantee record for a player in that group by getting $64MM, they snapped the pattern of giving away a third or fourth free agent season via club option
6:13
Webb's in that service bracket, better than Javier and building from a slightly stronger arbitration platform. In theory, he should be able to beat the $64MM. Can he also do that without giving the Giants a club option for 2028? Not sure

I like the direction the Marlins  are  going, strong starting pitching. What's your thoughts on what they also need?
Anthony Franco
6:15
It's easier said than done but they need more impact offensive talent. They have a bunch of decent hitters but don't have any impact power bats except for Jazz. That kind of middle-of-the-order thump typically comes from the corner outfield, first base or DH. Avi and Soler have flashed it in prior seasons but aren't that caliber of hitter on an annual basis
6:16
So it's kind of a cop out but they need those guys to play better than they normally do. They invested in them last winter and didn't get anywhere near the production they were (probably unrealistically) anticipating
I don't mind the team as a whole but think the offense is still too light to stick around in what's going to be a gauntlet of a division

Why can’t the heads of baseball just leave the game alone. I hate the new rules. No shift, ghost runners
Anthony Franco
6:18
I'm ambivalent on the shift ban. Don't think it'll achieve what the league wants it to do but I also don't feel any strong attachment to the shift. I hate the extra-inning gimmick and wouldn't have put it into play before the 12th inning, but I get why players and teams just want to get games over with

Walker Beuhler. Minimal appearances this season? Expectations after 2nd TJ.
Anthony Franco
6:19
Dave Roberts was on Buster Olney's podcast last week and said they weren't officially ruling him out for the season right now (there's no reason to obviously) but don't expect him back until 2024

Please comment on a couple of veterans currently without jobs, Elvis Andrus and Robbie Grossman.  Andrus was quite good for the White Sox at the end of last year and seems like he could help several teams.  Grossman was overall terrible offensively last season, but had a massive platoon split and was actually excellent against lefthanders; might be valuable as a platoon OF/PH against RHs.
Anthony Franco
6:21
Pretty much in agreement with you on both. I think they should both get MLB deals, although Andrus probably fits better in a utility capacity than as an everyday shortstop. He was good last year but the 17 homers came out of nowhere and doesn't feel like something he's repeating
Grossman's a short-side platoon corner OF

Pretty sure I've never done either of those things

Which team that made the 2022 postseason will miss out in 2023?
Which team that missed the 2022 playoffs will make it in 2023?
Anthony Franco
6:23
I don't feel super strongly about anyone falling out but guess I'd consider Seattle and Philly the respective playoff teams least likely to get back
6:25
Teams I think that could jump in? Mentioned Minnesota earlier. Milwaukee and the Angels would probably be next for me in the respective leagues
The six best teams in the NL feel like the ones that made the playoffs last year, but I don't know how often an entire league's playoff teams just repeat
Scott
6:26
With the signings of Peralta and Reyes and outside of Vargas do you see the Dodgers holding back prospects one more year
Anthony Franco
6:27
Peralta just offers some veteran insurance in case Outman struggles but he'll get a chance. Reyes is a low-cost bullpen dice roll coming off shoulder surgery. They're not doing much more than giving him an early-season look. If he struggles, they'll move on pretty quickly

6:27
Take a crack at projecting how many PAs the Crew gives Brian Anderson this year. For that minimal investment, I suspect he's going to log plenty of playing time moving around the corners.
Anthony Franco

425?
Cleveland
6:27
Gavin Williams and tanner bibbie both covered multiple levels and looked great, both could find themselves pushing to be on the 26 man roster by mid year. Would it make sense to start viewing espino as a backend reliever. Cleveland already has 4 guys that most teams would consider 8th or 9th innings guys. But another guy throwing 103 to that mix, with the his pitch mix could make a playoff run fun
