Hey everyone, hope you're all having a good evening!
Let's discuss some megadeals
My name
5:57
Who is the frontrunner for Swanson?
Anthony Franco
5:58
I still feel like he's most likely to end up with the Cubs
5:59
Guess I'd go Cubs, Twins, Braves (in that order) as my top three

What’s it like being a sports writer? Any tips for getting into the field?
Anthony Franco
5:59
Tough for me to answer this since I'm not out actively covering games a traditional "sportswriter" would be. I work from home, so it's a different kind of job
6:01
I got this job by applying to MLBTR when Tim put out one of the open calls for hiring. I don't have a journalism background and didn't really expect to do anything like this, just luckily stumbled into it

Giants fan here-why does the Correa signing feel so unsatisfying - tell me we’re a better team now ? How much better would Judge have been ???
Anthony Franco
6:02
I think Judge is better than Correa for 2023 only, although not dramatically. I don't care about Correa's dip in defensive metrics this year -- think that's just a blip -- and he was a top 20 hitter in MLB from May onwards
6:03
Long-term, I'd rather have Correa at $350MM over 13 than Judge at $360 over nine based on the youth and greater defensive value. I do think it's fair to say that's not really as satisfying for the Giants, who are squarely a win-now team competing with two elite teams in their own division, as it might be for most clubs

We know the Dodgers would rather find the next Heaney/Anderson, rather than re-sign them. Any predictions for their next reclamation project?
Anthony Franco
6:03
Ha this was fortuitous timing
It is apparently Noah Syndergaard

Where will I sign?
Anthony Franco
6:04
Like Boston as a fit there. Story to shortstop, Segura plugs in at second
Orioles Lifer
6:04
Is Kyle Gibson going to be our best SP addition, or do you think we add a better SP before Spring?
Anthony Franco
6:05
Still can't imagine their biggest addition is Jordan Lyles, although free agency's drying up pretty quickly. May have to come via trade but I do think they're getting someone better than Gibson
Sorry, didn't mean Lyles there. Stupid typo

Hello, so now what does Hoyer do? needs a 2b , catcher, 1b, and lots of pitching .
Anthony Franco

(Cubs)
6:07
Mentioned I like them on Dansby but if he goes elsewhere, they become a decent fit for a Brandon Drury type. Can play anywhere on the infield besides shortstop, can shuttle him around the diamond if Madrigal bounces back and takes second base again

Scott harris said he be very aggressive with tigers, they need lot of help. Signing boyd was a waste.. any other projected signings for tigers ???
Anthony Franco
6:08
I think it'll be more like the Boyd deal. Reclamation types, since they're not going to compete next year but aren't really rebuilding anymore. They just had too many holes on the roster to patch in one offseason
6:09
Brian Anderson fits, and Evan Petzold has linked them already. They'll have to get a catcher, although it's probably a Jorge Alfaro or Gary Sánchez type stopgap
Cards Catcher
6:09
Should the Cards be concerned that last year Contreras caught only 72 games and played in only 113?
Anthony Franco
6:10
Not really, the Cubs did it by design after signing Gomes
6:11
Guess you could argue that the Cubs felt Contreras would benefit from more rest is a tiny red flag, but I don't think it's that big a deal. They can start to break Iván Herrera on Contreras' rest days anyways

Rengifo for Edward Cabrera who says no?

I'm fascinated by the long contracts being handed out in free agency.  I also am interested in the reporting that MLB was going to reject the Giants deal with Judge of 14 years and $400 million for luxury tax manipulations.  How is Correa, Boegarts, and Turner's deals any different than Judge's proposed contract with the Giants?  Also, to get around luxury tax penalties, teams are tacking on extra years to these blockbuster deals, but what do the end of these contracts look like.  Does Correa, or Boegarts, or Turner get DFA'd when they no longer can produce?  Do the teams just eat the contracts?

I think the league is just eyeballing things on a case by case basis and decided that paying Judge through age-44 would've been unreasonable while paying the shortstops through age-40 would not have. It's not a great system but I also don't know how you draw actual hard-and-fast rules either

Isn't it possible that a player who rejected the qualifying offer somehow return to the team ? If so, has it ever been done ?  Thanks

Happens all the time. Rizzo did it this year, Verlander last year

What teams in need of CF help make the most sense for Michael A. Taylor?
Anthony Franco
6:15
Giants could use a glove-first CF, Rockies too. Guess he kind of fits in Boston if they don't add a middle infielder and want to push Hernández to second base

What upgrades does Cleveland need and what are some realistic options?
Anthony Franco
6:17
It's kind of rounding into form there. Would've liked to see them swing a little bigger than Zunino at catcher, but that's no longer a need I guess. Could still try to work in a platoon right-handed bat into the corner outfield -- an AJ Pollock or Chad Pinder type
6:18
Another left-hander to pair with Hentges in the bullpen would be nice. I like Will Smith for a lot of teams, since he was quietly very good in Houston after Atlanta traded him

We already know that Jerry Reinsdorf has decreed that, like Mr. Potter, there is just no money for anyone this Christmas. So I ask you, which is most likely to occur: trading Giolito, trading Hendricks or Graveman, trading a surprise player (Eloy, Robert, TA, etc) or running to Spring Training with this roster and some non-roster invitees?
